What's the one thing you've done for years and years which you'd never go without?

OP posts:
mdinbc · 14/07/2023 06:27

I would say a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen, mascara and tinted lip balm, and a good haircut. Looking tidy on a daily basis makes a huge difference.

I haven't, but I recommend hand cream with sunscreen as well to younger people. I do have some sun spots now that I regret not looking after earlier.

LaMarschallin · 14/07/2023 07:42

Less, better quality makeup with a nod to current trends.
I used to wear thicker foundation and heavier eye makeup when I was properly going for it in my 20s - 40s. Now that would sit in every wrinkle.
I've tried to follow trends too, but not obsessively, and tried not to stick over-faithfully to fashions from my youth (although, like Diana, I find the blue eyeliner still has a bit of a siren call).

Nivea soft
Erborian cc team makes your skin look fresher
No black eyeliner

I also agree with @GarlicGrace I also think you can look quite young in your early 50s, but in your mid-late 50s gravity takes hold. A bit of fat can help.

Tahitiansummer · 14/07/2023 08:20

Have lots of time to relax and take care of yourself and live a stress free life with no financial worries

pollykitty · 14/07/2023 08:25

Dermalogica skin smoothing cream. Their other stuff is good too but this moisturiser is the best. I have tried so many.
I’m happy to care less about my looks but don’t go in for the ‘no fucks given’ attitude which I think is just an excuse for looking like a slob.

Chrysanthemum5 · 14/07/2023 08:27

Look after the skin on your neck and hands. I didn't start this early enough!

Jeevesnotwooster · 14/07/2023 08:32

Moisturised everyday since I was 14. But didn't do my hands which aren't in such good shape

Have been doing no carb diet for 3 weeks and skin looking uber glowing and losing weight.

I don't get nearly enough sleep though.

Jeevesnotwooster · 14/07/2023 08:33

I also pretty much gave up using make up in my late twenties unless on a big night out but have started using light make up again.

Stay out of the sun

This. This is the biggest thing you can do and it’s free.

otherwayup · 14/07/2023 08:36

Sleep, very little alcohol and a thick, blunt fringe!
I'm regularly mistaken for someone many years younger and think it's due to the above!

MorrisZapp · 14/07/2023 08:36

I only use sun cream in Majorca. I bloody love the sun and I'm damned if I'm suffering itchy skin and runny eyes to protect my skin from what rays deign to put in an appearance in Edinburgh.

My mum hadn't heard of sun cream until she was in her forties. It's something you pack for holidays. Her skin is great, as was my grans, who turned her face to the sun like a flower whenever she could and didn't drink a glass of water in her life.

FloNightingale · 14/07/2023 08:38

User9753224 · 13/07/2023 22:55

Agree!

Also this. Not free, but is the one moisturiser I keep coming back to.

Plunkplink · 14/07/2023 08:38

Lose weight, SPF,

MorrisZapp · 14/07/2023 08:44

My own tip is weight loss but I'm carrying a good few extra pounds myself just now and struggling to find motivation to shift it. A heavy middle is so ageing but post menopause it's so much harder to lose. I had a bit of a 'midlife crisis' a few years back and lost weight as part of that, it was amazing. But I'm over it now and have to find the energy all by myself, bah.

A really cool jacket is an easy win.

EffortlessDesmond · 14/07/2023 08:50

Keep wearing proper (non-stretch) denim. When your jeans get tight, it's time to rein back the carbs for a week or two.

Otherwise, sleep, serum, walking and Pilates. Food and wine in moderation.

Zebracat · 14/07/2023 08:50

Moisturise, swim, fringe. Stay slim. Keep clothes simple. Written from hospital after a hip replacement with a bmi of 33, so that’s why I wish Id stayed slim. Might have not needed it and if did wouldnt have to hear them say high bmi at every handover.

Vargas · 14/07/2023 08:51

Exercise. Exfoliate face regularly. SPF on face, neck, chest and hands. Very low carbs. 10,000 steps minimum. Vitamins and fish oil capsules. Eyelash serum. HRT.

Rebootnecessary · 14/07/2023 08:51

Minimal alcohol
Drink lots of water
regular exercise
a good diet
a good haircut

Zebracat · 14/07/2023 08:52

And some more. Spend time outside, find your passion. Be positive, moaning and bitterness are so aging.

Zebracat · 14/07/2023 08:54

And good eyebrows.

Hedjwitch · 14/07/2023 08:58

Damned if I'm staying out of the sun. We see it so rarely in Scotland I soak it up when I can and feel better for it. I do wear a sunscreen though and an SPF moisturiser. Recently discovered UpCircle skin products and skin is the best it has ever been at nearly 60 years old.
Yoga keeps the joints supple and helps posture and toning. I dye my hair.

LaMarschallin · 14/07/2023 09:01

I'm curious to know how much HRT helps. I can't have it for medical reasons but my skin was doing very well for my age until the menopause hit and I've noticed more rapid changes since.

BansheeofInisherin · 14/07/2023 09:04

Tretinoin. At 51, I have zero wrinkles and am so much a Tret evangelist that people think I work for Dermatica. ( I don't and I get mine from overseas). It is a miracle in a bottle.

This isn't boasting because I have jowls and a saggy tum. But I am super happy with my skin.

Oceanmum23 · 14/07/2023 09:05

Sleep
walking
yoga/basic stretching exercises each day
staying out the sun

@peachesandcream2021
ive not slept through the night in six years! My two are 6 & 3 yrs. That has had an impact on my looks too 🤣

AnnaNims · 14/07/2023 09:07

Botox, SPF all year round, never go in the sun, Dermalogica.
