What's the one thing you've done for years and years which you'd never go without?

I find the 'stay out of the sun' advice interesting, because recently there was a thread on here where a lot of people were saying how awful anyone looks if they're pale and that everyone looks better with a slight tan. But then also saying not to use fake tan as it's 'chavvy'. So how are you meant to have a tan to look better but also to stay out of the sun!?

Rust?
it is a wet summer

Try to be happy. Nothing is more ageing than worry & stress.

But this thread reminds me so much of what my old dad used to say….

“Don't drink, don’t smoke, don’t associate with fast women.
You might not live any longer but it sure as hell will feel like you do” 😂

Well he drank, smoked a pipe, his diet consisted of almost exclusively cheese sandwiches on white bread, chips, biscuits, sausage rolls & toffees….mum died when I was at primary school & once I left home & he lived alone I don’t think a vegetable ever crossed his threshold. No idea about fast women 😂

Must have been some truth it it, he died two years ago aged 99.

Oh bless him he sounded brilliant!

Sunglasses and suncream

I'm told I look far younger than 48. In my case it's genetics, and luck really.

I've some tiny Dot Cotton lines around my mouth from when I smoked, I regret ever starting. And because I slept on my tummy, my cheeks push up and contributed to crows feet. I've never used fancy moisturiser. In fact my go-to one is a massive bottle of aftersun.

So mine are - sleep on your back.
Moisturise your hands and neck as well as other parts.
Maintain a placid expression - your most used expression tends to be where your wrinkles will end up starting so if you frown a lot, or purse your lips, stop!
Posture and maintain a healthy weight. It's always easier to prevent putting on weight than it is to take it off.

I am fair so my eyebrows are gone very pale as I grey. I get henna and get them shaped every three/4 weeks and they look so much better than anything I could manage myself.

Keeping your smile at it's best also keeps you youthful looking.

Turfwars · 14/07/2023 16:08

Those of you that get Tretinoin abroad, do you travel to purchase it or can you order it online? if so, where?

My Number 1 beauty secret is not giving a shit 😂 From the age of 15 to 55, I cleansed, toned & moisturised twice a day or more without fail. I did facepacks, massages, and went for hideously expensive anti-ageing treatments. (The Daily Mail paid for one course, but didn't run the story because you couldn't see much difference.) I SPF'd religiously and must have kept Clarins's shareholders in dividends for years. I walked, gymmed, danced, necked vitamins & had lots of sex.

Everybody thought I looked young. Until, suddenly, I didn't. Granted, I smoked, drank and took a fair few drugs during that time - but what's the point of looking fabulous if you have to live like a nun? Nuns don't need skincare!

So I reached the surprisingly relaxing conclusion that ageing is something you can only 'fight' by:
a] dying young;
b] being a boring fucker;
c] being a nun.

It's great! I should start a beauty line with no active ingredients, called No Fucks Given 😏

love this

Silk pillowcases. No friction = less wrinkles. No sleepy pirate scar in the morning.

There's a YouTuber called Angie hot and flashy, she's lovely but insane. She wears sunscreen all over her body indoors because UV rays can bounce off walls apparently.

She lives in Canada.

So sunburn/UV damage from somewhere that often has a covering of snow in winter to reflect it, has significantly less rain/precipitation and hotter summers than the UK?

I'm pretty sure she's in the US. But yeah, still seems crackers to wear spf when indoors.

😂😂😂 I am assuming that’s a joke.

also

I am 51, so won’t die young, I’m not boring nor a nun. I drink and don’t eat healthily all of the time. I do however look young and I put that down to good skincare, SPF and never sitting in the sun, 4 weekly facials, HRT and a bit of botox twice a year.

These things work for me, and I don’t have to be boring to do them.

Sleep. SPF. Rosehip oil on my face at night.

DeliciouslyDecadent · 14/07/2023 17:55

SPF 50
Every day all year round, under make up, since aged 35. Now in my late 50s.

Sleep
No booze

peachesandcream2021 · 14/07/2023 17:57

But what gets me with SPF is they say it only lasts for about 2 hours or so and then it's ineffective... so what's the point?!!!

OP posts:
Azaeleasinbloom · 14/07/2023 18:00

Teeth whitening. Not Ross from friends stuff, but had my dentist sort out proper trays and bleach. I probably don’t do it often enough, but feel more confident smiling 😁

WhatADrabCarpet · 14/07/2023 18:03

Stay away from the sun.

Drink lots of water.

If you must have a glass of wine etc... drink a glass of water after.

Don't slather your face in the latest fancy chemical.

Use a basic moisturiser.

Don't smoke.

I don't think that's the case.

I know that on the packaging of sun screen for the body it says apply after 2 hours, but that is usually on the basis you are sunbathing or at least in very hot sun and sweating.

SPF for the face is often mineral (not chemical) and doesn't disappear so fast.

And the point is it's to protect against the ageing UVA rays not the UVB (burning rays).

You can also buy a spray sort which can be applied over make up.

Contentment, good health, financial security, few if any worries, early retirement, Nivea Soft cream, plenty of sleep, a walk every day, travel, never bored in my own company.

I am just ordinary, and count my many blessings, and because I don't worry about ageing, I don't really care if I have a few wrinkles, as long as they are happy ones, not frowny ones! Am 66 in August.

Alwayspeckish · 14/07/2023 20:51

but early retirement . .. financial security.. and travel .. are not ‘ ordinary’ or do able for many .

I agree with you a simple life and one of security and the choice to be able to retire early is really good for health. No doubt .

but its just not advice many have the option to follow really .

It doesn't have to be a hugely wealthy thing. I am not wealthy nor would I want to be, too much responsibility and too many hangers would wait for me to pop me clogs for the will!

I worked since I was 13 (Saturdays) illegal now but everyone did it then, worked and studied part time after secondary. Got a job in the public sector at the lowest rung, and worked hard to end up in quite a senior role. I am very fortunate I know that. But I live alone, pay for everything myself, and live a frugal enough life. What I save is spent on travel and enjoyment. Not every week or month, but as often as I can. Life is short.

When I was younger I used to wonder how people could afford to have new cars, big houses, holidays etc. but I realised that eventually if you plan well, your turn will come around. I am not smug, I know not everyone will be able to do it, but a majority will.

In the meantime, I'll try and keep the wrinkles confined to laughter lines!
