@Stravaig

By the time you see them it's too late!
They lay eggs which hatch the next spring.
A good system is what you need .
Wearing and washing something won't make a jot of difference if its already infested, unless of course you boil wash.

My clothes bring me enormous pleasure and they have been carefully chosen or made and looked after.
A minimalist wardrobe for me is like eating to live , it's not happening !

Stravaig · 09/07/2023 10:11

A few people here are working on more thoughtful curation of their wardrobes, and an intrinsic benefit of that is better pest control 🤷‍♀️🥳. Or so I've found, although I assume the cold helps too.

Stoic123 · 09/07/2023 10:35

All the moth talk prompted me to pull out my stored jumpers. I ended up trying them all on and it made me look forward to autumn/winter. Need to be careful I don't wish my life away.

On a positive note, I tried them with the herringbone maple trousers that I was wavering about. Trousers go really well with 70% of my knitwear so that's now an easy keep.

@faustina - I tried on the Donegal Knit jumper. I want to order another one but could really do with it being shorter in the body. Think you arranged a custo order - was this easy to sort? Happy no returns now that I've seen what they are like.

dudsville · 09/07/2023 10:40

I agree @Alpacasoft , I can't remember the poster yesterday as I had to so much to catch up on but "prepper" made me laugh. I do have the physical contraints of my wardrobes to keep in mind though!

ScottishMouse · 09/07/2023 10:49

home from holidays last night and picked up my last sale parcel from my neighbour. I had already decided that the three dresses would be going back so I could buy the new chambray shirt.
But….all three are great!
Needlecord dress in navy - expected this to be huge in my old Toast size given the reviews, but it’s not. It’s more of an autumn/winter/early spring dress, so need to try with some boots and sweaters and make a decision.
Turrell check dress - this was a real wildcard, not my usual style, but it’s cute. But worried about the linen viscose fabric mix. Does anyone have this, and how did it wash?
Deep vneck pinafore in tawny brown - I knew this would be great as I got the slate in the sale. Unfortunately, I had to send that one back because there was a big pen mark across the back that I hadn’t noticed. I wonder if I would wear the brown as much, but the slate hasn’t reappeared in my size.
Hmmmmm….what to do….

Same here.
I work strictly on a one in one out basis as I can't bear overwhelm.
I think I'm a bit old fashioned as I also store and rotate between the seasons.

I have purchased several things this sale but the new collection isn't really ticking boxes for me but it does sometimes take a while for things to grow on me.
Prepper did make me laugh also but it did make sense,I want to wear and enjoy beautiful things in my retirement and it makes sense to prepare for this financially and in my wardrobe while I can.

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 09/07/2023 11:19

I think I asked this question yesterday but it got lost in all the moth chat 😱.

Do the hemp mariners relax a bit? I’m struggling as I’m not used to trousers that sit on my waist, but they’re so nice I really want to keep them.

dudsville · 09/07/2023 11:32

Oh yes, I meant to express sympathy with the prepper comment, not to deride it! I do think of myself very much as buying clothes for a time when I will have a limited income.

@ScottishMouse , some love the linen viscose fabric mix, I must say I loathe it. I only have the green check and the frith check, so not the turrell. The green check is the better of the two, the fabric goes back to feeling pretty good once dried and ironed, but I love cotton and this will never feel like 100% cotton. The Frith is a little more stiff, I suspect it would benefit from a brief tuble dry, or maybe from being dry cleaned, neither of which I'm going to do, it's really, really hard to iron (I don't know why but the green check one is fine to iron). I also find both of these crease up much more quickly so they rarely get a second wear before needing to be washed. I won't buy this mix again, to be fair I didn't mean to buy it these two times, but only caught my mistake when pulling it out of the washing machine - this is weird fabric when wet.

faustina · 09/07/2023 11:58

Thanks all for this very useful reminder of how shit moths can be. I have done a bulk order on amazon for hanging moth killer so I can replace mine. <shudder>

@Stoic123 the made to order process couldn't have been easier, although I too wish I'd been less conservative with length and ordered mine slightly shorter. You have a WhatsApp chat with them, and then as far as I remember, you place an order for your preferred colour and then email with your exact measurements. Delivery was extremely quick! Which colour will you get?

ToastCosILoveIt · 09/07/2023 12:44

@Theteapotsbrokenspout , I have the hemp mariners and my view is that they do loosen a bit. I kept the 10 in the end and worried were they a bit snug but definitely not by the end of the day.

Noodle421 · 09/07/2023 12:47

Architektin · 09/07/2023 05:24

@Noodle421 I had my colours done 20 years & again 2 years ago. Still the same just more refined i.e. soft autumn instead of just autumn, my daughter is true autumn & there are slight differences.
Highly recommend. I feel amazing, more 'me' & get compliments, it saves expensive mistakes. I used House of Colour. I was lucky enough to be near one in Hampshire recently who has worked with the BBC & movie productions. I think it took about 2 years to cycle thru my old wardrobe, selling, dying, swapping etc just to be warned, but a lot was already OK.

@dudsville Yep, defo clothes, I've spent too much time and effort to acquire them! I spend a lot of time travelling for work and I'm surprised how much I can get into a suitcase if I use my palette. Every single item tones with each other! Infinite options.

Thank you. I do have a basic sense of which colours suit me - blue/green etc but it completely threw me when I found out I also suit mustard. I think getting my colours ‘done’ will help with a more nuanced approach and as you say make it less likely to make expensive mistakes. For instance, I was mightily impressed that you had all those sophisticated colour accents ready to hand to go with the shell skirt. Maybe we should start up a ‘wardrobe share’ 😂 It would certainly suit me but I’m afraid it would probably be a share in one direction only. I could offer you a navy swap and that’s about it. I’ll have to build up my rosewood and gold accessories but I’m not even sure if those colours suit me so I come back full circle to the idea of having my colours done. It might be a good investment. The shell skirt has opened up a whole box of possibilities 😂

dudsville · 09/07/2023 04:36

@Noodle421 " If we were allowed to save one set of possessions from a burning house, I think it would be my knitwear collection." Absolutely, I've even gone so far as to think it through. Get Dh and dogs out of the upstairs window, then throw all my clothes into a duvet cover and throw that out of the window! Not wise, i know, and probably wouldn't happen, but I've thought about it!

So funny 😆

Stoic123 · 09/07/2023 12:56

@faustina - Ocean Blue again. I accidentally put mine in the washing machine (don't know why - not thinking). It shrunk -bizarrely, the width stayed the same but body length shrunk by 4 inches. It's now the perfect dimensions for me but wool texture has gone horrible. I've just measured my shrunk version and sent those in 😀. Will be careful handwash from now on.

Oh no. Given my rather naive approach to combating moths with a bit of clothing spritz , how should I prevent damage going forward? My summer knitwear has been sitting on shelves exposed and unprotected. I don’t have a massive number of clothes in my wardrobe and there are no undisturbed dark corners. It’s a wardrobe very much in daily use. How do I kill any potential eggs that may or may not have been laid ? Put them in the freezer for a few days ? I’m talking about super soft weighty alpaca that feel like cashmere. I invested in them hoping they’d last a lifetime if taken care of properly. I’m not in a position to replace them if they get damaged.

faustina · 09/07/2023 13:13

@Stoic123 - oh no! It is quite an open weave isn't it. how annoying that you got the length but not the same quality. Hope it goes well for you

@Noodle421 - could you just have a look at them to check for eggs? And then get some moth protection for going forwards. I have acana sachets for my drawers and little hanging things for my wardrobes (I use three along each hanging rail). You could also buy bags to keep them in if they're on shelves? And perhaps pop a sachet in the bags

I would place them in large bags, IKEA do great 6 Litre ones and place each item in turn into the freezer for a few days.
You could then pop one of the moth killer things into each bag as you store them as insurance.
If you can't see any damage now it's likely this will stop it if a moth has got in.
I love alpaca, it's my fibre of choice, light , airy and so warm Smile

Hence my usernameGrin

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 09/07/2023 13:36

Thanks @ToastCosILoveIt I was hoping it was that type of fabric, I didn’t really want to move 4 buttons.

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 09/07/2023 14:11

Got my Fracap ankle shoes in Ink out today to wear, this year’s shoe worn several times but not recently, and they’ve gone from blue to brown.
I thought I must be seeing things but DH agreed, they’re just not blue any more.
I’ve always cleaned them with neutral polish and they were definitely blue last time I wore them. I’ve emailed Toast to ask if using blue polish will restore the colour. It seems a really strange thing to happen Confused .

Stravaig · 09/07/2023 14:13

This is a good article about clothes moths from the Guardian a few years ago, plus lots of comments too.

@Noodle421 Wee swoon here over your trove of soft weighty alpaca 😍

Architektin · 09/07/2023 14:23

@Noodle421 I remember being really shocked with my colours! I'd always worn black, dark aubergine, dark teals and navy. I trained as an architect back in the day when there weren't that many women around so I was pretty sober with my colours. Took me ages to get used to the softer ones.. I think I ignored them for the first year and then started buying T shirts to mix in. Then of course someone comments on how well you look or how nice you look and you can't deny the effect 😅and that encourages you to give it a go. Blues, greens and mustards are a pretty safe bet if they suit you, you must be on the right track!!
I can't wear white, it's my worst colour, too harsh.

Stoic123 · 09/07/2023 14:32

@Theteapotsbrokenspout - how bizarre. Can you post a photo? Intrigued!

Stravaig · 09/07/2023 14:36

I admit, I'm too scared to get my colours done - what if I'm wearing all the wrong things? I have very specific tastes in which colours I will and won't wear, and the thought of upsetting that applecart ... yikes. You're all braver than me!

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 09/07/2023 14:44

There you go @Stoic123 - not ink blue anymore
