Oh god, I'm now in to the moth chat bit. I have giant hand made bags of lavender and cedar rings between each jumper. It's that enough or do i need to do more?

My nan had a lovely huge built in closet lined in cedar. My mum has it now. It's a thing of pure beauty.

It will deter them. It won't kill larvae and eggs. That's why you need proper moth death stuff🤣🤣🤣🤣

Alpacasoft · 08/07/2023 21:12

Sorry for starting the moth chat 😂
I do think if you as toast would say, curate a long term wardrobe, then dealing with up keep , repairs and preventing damage is really important.
A lost skill in the years of disposable clothing.
I don't know why but I love doing laundry, minor repairs and managing my ward robe on a seasonal basis.
I cleaned my winter boots this week as they had just returned from being reheeled.
On my recent holiday, the hotel provided the usual shower cap and toiletries but also a teeny sewing kit which has been popped in my case and made me very happy.Smile

dudsville · 08/07/2023 21:27

I also love doing laundry! I love mending or tweaking things to suit me. I love ironing. The place where my dresses and trousers live has a lot of cedar, not lined but still. So what's "a good moth death stuff"? I don't have a moth problem but it could always develop. Thankfully when we recarpeted the house we got rid of the (pale blue) wool carpet and, because we have dogs, chose a man-made fiber that can be bleached.

I’m obviously Emperors new clothes about the scarf @Laska2Meryls 🤣. I’ve worn mine so much it must have paid for itself already. Admittedly it goes with a lot of existing colours I have and I thought it a good size 😬. I even used it on holiday as a cover so nothing was revealed while I slept on my sunbed.
I’ve even bought the new colour way. 🤦‍♀️

Hmmm... Maybe I will reconsider in the morning then and measure it against the listing dimensions...
It is this one you have @Countmeout ?

It didn't seem large enough for a cover up to me.. but I am a bit of a heffalump

dudsville · 08/07/2023 22:04

Thanks never, off to amazon now!

Architektin · 08/07/2023 22:16

@ilovecherries 🤣

@Noodle421 I'm a soft autumn so I'll wear the shell colour with soft sage, olive, chocolate, coffee, pale gold, rosewood t shirts. I have a few patterned neckerchiefs with those colours in and shell (cream) to make it more cohesive and connected which I think creates a better look with a paler colour.

As for moths I've tried everything over the years but now use Manchester Mothmen traps, I think they sell on Amazon.
Expensive but so worth it. 5 for £15 I think.
They use pheromones on a sticky base and you'll be surprised to find the pale brown clothes moth trapped on them!
I had an elusive moth living in my flipping huge wicker basket full of fabric scraps, tapestry wool etc and so I left one on top, 24 hours later there it was dead on the sticky stuff.
Like others I'm manic about moths, my nightmare is that scene in Cruella when the vault opens and all the gowns have been eaten. 😭

Those are what I use, personally I find them exceptional. I also use fabric spray.. i spray it arounf drawers and carpets, also cedar balls, lavender, spare soaps, everything.. because you know.. the Cruella thing.

dudsville · 08/07/2023 22:42

We have a lot of lavender each year. I often don't bother to harvest it, but when i bought a bunch of toast knitwear i did make several very large bags. I've been enjoying the smell when i open my knitwear cupboard, but I've also placed an amazon order now, thanks everyone!

OMG 😱 I’m going to have nightmares about moths !! One just flew by as I’m texting. Just whacked it with my fly swatter.

I'm not kidding, I kill every moth in the house that I see.

neveradullmoment99 · 08/07/2023 23:06

The ones that the larvae eat your clothes look harmless and insignificant and are pretty small.

@@Noodle421 I’m interested in the knitwear and clothing spray , could you enlighten me ? Maybe it’s been mentioned already but I’m behind and the thread moves so fast!

Hi, yes of course. I’ve recently started using products from Clothes Doctor but following on from our moth chat, I’m not sure the knitwear mist will be sufficient deterrent. I think plastic boxes and industrial strength anti-moth chemicals are the way forward. The company also do a White Tea and Mint clothing spray, although I’m happy to use the Lily and Bergamot steamer spray to freshen up shirts and blouses. Nice to use if clothing has been sitting in the laundry pile for a while. The cedar wood and vanilla knitwear mist is quite strong - quite a ‘winter’ fragrance but I’m assuming a good anti moth repellent, so I spray it liberally in my wardrobe on my jumpers/cardigans. When it runs out I’m going to try the Lavender and Thyme version.

Oooh, I’m loving the colour palette you suggest. I sometimes find it hard to get started with colour combinations , so thanks for the inspiration. Love the sound of sage, olive, rosewood and gold. I’m thinking of getting my colours done to help with my choices going forward. Is this still a thing ?

I’m so pleased we are discussing moths. I’m woefully underprepared, but not for long now thanks to this chat. If we were allowed to save one set of possessions from a burning house, I think it would be my knitwear collection.

ilovecherries · 08/07/2023 23:22

Jeez, the moth talk has had me rushing to Amazon to buy every deterrent known to man as I’m about to go on holiday and leave my precious clothes unattended. A massive box of potentially toxic material should arrive tomorrow and I shall distribute it everywhere. I’ve been using Lakeland lavender stuff but it’s probably not enough for Invasion of the Killer Moth 🦋 (I think that’s probably a butterfly by it got offered up when I typed moth.)

@Noodle421 " If we were allowed to save one set of possessions from a burning house, I think it would be my knitwear collection." Absolutely, I've even gone so far as to think it through. Get Dh and dogs out of the upstairs window, then throw all my clothes into a duvet cover and throw that out of the window! Not wise, i know, and probably wouldn't happen, but I've thought about it!

Architektin · 09/07/2023 05:24

@Noodle421 I had my colours done 20 years & again 2 years ago. Still the same just more refined i.e. soft autumn instead of just autumn, my daughter is true autumn & there are slight differences.
Highly recommend. I feel amazing, more 'me' & get compliments, it saves expensive mistakes. I used House of Colour. I was lucky enough to be near one in Hampshire recently who has worked with the BBC & movie productions. I think it took about 2 years to cycle thru my old wardrobe, selling, dying, swapping etc just to be warned, but a lot was already OK.

@dudsville Yep, defo clothes, I've spent too much time and effort to acquire them! I spend a lot of time travelling for work and I'm surprised how much I can get into a suitcase if I use my palette. Every single item tones with each other! Infinite options.

ScottishMouse · 09/07/2023 06:04

Really appreciate the moth chat. A couple of questions for those in the know…

Is my knitwear safer in a chest of drawers or on the shelf of a wardrobe? (Obvs in bags too)

what kind of plastic storage bags are best? At the moment I just use large food ziploc bags, is that good enough? Or something like this? Or something else?https://www.amazon.co.uk/Clothing-Resealable-Zip-lock-Waterproof-Organiser/dp/B09J2GHY67/ref=mp_s_a_1_12?crid=2K9RAT24DMJ9&keywords=moth+plastic+knitwear+bags&qid=1688878888&sprefix=moth+plastic+knitwear+bags%2Caps%2C79&sr=8-12

Thanks!

Please don't kill the beautiful moths which fly in through windows - they aren't the ones you need to worry about

I use the horrible acana plastic things which you hang in your wardrobe - JL and Waitrose have them. They smell disgusting but needs must

About carpets - when I moved here, the whole house was carpeted in something very cheap and beige and manmade and the moths LOVED it. Now I have floorboards, wool rugs, and a proper wool carpet on the stairs and they don't go near any of it

Not all moths are clothes/ carpet moths but they do sadly fly in the window or can be brought in by clothes/shoes seemingly. Worth noting, these moths usual habitat are birds nests. I'm not a fan of killing things generally( insects/creatures) and put them outside but a moth infestation is truly hideous and a huge upheaval.

Stravaig · 09/07/2023 08:15

I'd like to join up the moths and minimalism strands of conversation by pointing out that if your clothes are in constant rotation, because you don't have very many of them, then moths have very little chance to settle in for a good feast.

My warmest woollens get washed sometime in May, and put away until early September. No central heating in a cold climate takes care of the rest of the year. Freezer if I'm worried about an individual item or second-hand purchase. (I manage this with only a wee fridge icebox.)

Though given these newfangled long hot summers - 26° yesterday, 20° overnight - I may need to up my game, so I am taking notes!

Agree that we shouldn't be killing insects if at all avoidable.

Snowyowl78 · 09/07/2023 09:00

I’ve just ordered those traps! Thanks for the advice. I want to be careful about using anything too heavy duty because of my cat.
