I also put moth hangers everywhere in my wardrobe and moth killer things in my drawers.
Had an outbreak on a wool rug. Awful. Never again.

I did not know moths were keen on unwashed stuff! @Alpacasoft i have a load of toast cashmere jumpers and I haven’t washed any of them as I don’t want to shrink them, how would you wash them?

They love it!!
There have been record numbers of moth infestations as people wash and dry clean less due to the cost of living crisis.
I should say that most of the time it's fine and most people say they have never had an issue.
Once you have had moths and see the damage they create it does make you some what twitchy!

I wash by hand in blood temperature water, use a tiny squeeze of baby shampoo and just pop them in the bowl and leave them alone for 45 mins.
Then very gently swish, then rinse in the same temperature water.
No rubbing, agitation or temperature shock.
Place between 2 bath towels and gently press to remove excess water, reshape and dry flat.
Whizz over gently with a debobbler and steam if needed.
Disclaimer -this works for me, if you are really worried take to a specialist dry cleaner.

Alpacasoft · 08/07/2023 16:49

I use fabric bags, the sort shoes come in , inside plastic boxes.
With moth sachets.
I also check my wardrobe, clean it and move stuff around and check it twice a year!

Scarred for life @neveradullmoment99 , they ate my bedroom carpet as well!
Now I have wooden floors

ToastCosILoveIt · 08/07/2023 16:58

Re the Breen skirt, is it true to size?

Feedback on some arrivals today (I have been overcautious and reordered the trousers and dress that were further reduced and they are arriving on Monday) - the oil kick flare trousers are simply lovely and very true to size (no way I could have sized down from my high street 12). There is no sign of a kick at the end (although it looks pronounced on the web), they are just fairly baggy legged. They are a keeper.

The drawstring linen dress collar tunic dress in a 10 and 12 - 12 swamps me so I will stick with the 10 if I keep it. It would look fab with DMs and tights. I’m not sure what purpose the drawstring serves because you can’t tie it up. It is a lovely and substantial fabric that drapes really well.

The canvas utility trousers in herb are also lovely. The 10 I could just about do up but the 12 are the perfect fit. I really like that style of trousers for winter with jumpers and boots. I am definitely keeping them and the price is fab at £60.

Moths ate two carpets and 4 binbags full of clothes (inc lots of cashmere) pre-pandemic. It was a horrible experience and I am also scarred for life from it. Oddly never had a problem before moving into this house

For washing cashmere I just use the wool wash on my washing machine, and a delicates or wool laundry liquid. Then dry flat. I have never ever shrunk anything using that method

I know! Its horrible. They ate a toast top I had for years [Jersey] peppered it with holes and left everything else [apart from the rug] alone. I did a repair on it in similar colours. It was ok.

Awful. I'm.also scarred.
I wash my cashmere the same way.

The Shore gingham check scarf arrived .. anf it is going straight back.. sorry Toast it may be hand woven by Artisans but it ain't worth £45 to me ( and certainly not the full price) its dull, and not very long or wide .. definite fail..
So my end of sale didn't work out too well.. I am still waiting for an answer to my email , and so it may all be going back on Monday after all.

Architektin · 08/07/2023 17:50

@Alpacasoft Thank you for the tips, I'll also take a look at Draper's Daughter & Backstitch, both new to me.
Re the linens, yes they take a while to arrive but my goodness aren't they lovely!

@Noodle421 Yes, I'm surprised the skirts went so slowly, I suppose unless you're in a Toast shop and see them irl you would probably pass them by online, I certainly did, thinking they were perhaps too lightweight like the cotton/linen workshirt in shell, which they aren't.
It's a shame they don't do more to highlight some of the 'quieter' pieces on the live segments. For me it's the perfect skirt with just enough interesting design detail, versatile colour and a very flattering shape.

Noodle421 · 08/07/2023 18:03

@ToastCosILoveIt i find the skirt true to size. I like that it’s slightly high waisted so holds my stomach in nicely 😂 you can remove the tie for a flatter look if you want to wear something over the waistband.

Thank you Noodle.

Noodle421 · 08/07/2023 18:10

@Architektin I agree, it’s a pity they don’t do so much promoting of quieter pieces although it doesn’t matter as I’m actively seeking them as I need a few more workhorse staples. I love the shell skirt ( it’s just arrived ) I like the colour but I’m not quite sure whether to keep it - not quite so slimming as the Breen because it is lighter - also I know it’s a neutral but it’s very warm
and I’m not sure what colours to pair it with - pls can I ask what sort of tops/colours you plan to wear with it ? I have a mustard trench and that looks nice with it.

Noodle421 · 08/07/2023 18:18

Thank you everyone for all your moth stories
and tips. I do get twitchy because we had them in our carpet years ago and had to get the council to defumigate. I’m now scared to go away for a few days because I don’t have time to deal with my jumpers properly before I go but I’ve just remembered I have a couple of unused plastic storage boxes - knits are going straight inside, so hopefully they will be ok. I was regularly hoovering out my wardrobe and shaking and re folding clothes and letting plenty of light in but I don’t think that’s enough of a deterrent. Thank you for letting me know fabric boxes are not enough on their own. I was about to order some.

Navy/ black but it's neutral so most things. Look on Pinterest for more ideas? I do this when I'm unsure of combinations.

@neveradullmoment99 Ah, yes. Good idea about Pinterest Thenk you

OftenOrange · 08/07/2023 19:35

@@Noodle421 I’m interested in the knitwear and clothing spray , could you enlighten me ? Maybe it’s been mentioned already but I’m behind and the thread moves so fast!

OftenOrange · 08/07/2023 20:08

I’m rethinking my sale items, today in store I bought the Lydia v neck dress which deserves all the praise it received on here.
I realise that the simpler designs suit me best . It was my style before I got hooked on Toast , and so I’ll return the Maya dress .
The Japanese block print dress is not really my best shape , even XS is super voluminous, especially at the back .
But I really love the fabric . I need a dressmaker like @ilovecherries to tweak it ! I’m considering taking off the ties at the neck and attaching them at the sides so that I can cinch it in at the back a bit.

Countmeout · 08/07/2023 20:31

I’m obviously Emperors new clothes about the scarf @Laska2Meryls 🤣. I’ve worn mine so much it must have paid for itself already. Admittedly it goes with a lot of existing colours I have and I thought it a good size 😬. I even used it on holiday as a cover so nothing was revealed while I slept on my sunbed.
I’ve even bought the new colour way. 🤦‍♀️

dudsville · 08/07/2023 20:33

I've got mountains to catch up on so I'm starting a response that may not make sense by the time i get to the next page!

@Stoic123 , that's a neat idea to ensure all your nice things get wear. @neveradullmoment99 ,I also like to wear things more then once before washing unless needed, but since the pandemic I'm happy to wear the same dress twice in a row at work. I've been pondering why i need to show the world a different outfit each day. I don't know what that's about.

ilovecherries · 08/07/2023 20:35

Stoic123 · 08/07/2023 14:59

@Architektin and @Alpacasoft - thank you.

You've made me feel less like a shopoholic (albeit limited scope) and more like a prepper.

I totally feel better now too! I’m being forward thinking. My 2023 wardrobe is the 2020 toilet roll equivalent.

dudsville · 08/07/2023 20:44

I'm enjoying the chat about unashamedly creating a nice wardrobe. I'm also looking to retire in a few years and feel I'm buying for later me. I actually do have a few vices but nothing costly, we also haven't been on holiday in many years. I don't need an excuse to spend my money, but i do feel OK about it so long as i don't go crazy and feel i need to own everything i like, as that won't suit how i want to live... but toast clothing does test that ideal!

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 08/07/2023 20:44

Thanks @faustina , now I think I remember you saying it was your local store. Shame they don’t have much homeware but neither did the 2 London ones I went to last time. I really must make an effort to get to Cambridge, meanwhile I shall continue to campaign for a Norwich store.

ilovecherries · 08/07/2023 20:45

I live in fear of moths, especially as my wardrobe is - ahem -full. I do store knitwear in sealed plastic boxes in the spare room, but I believe the voracious little blighters will eat other fabrics too. I have moth repellant everywhere and I try and keep the wardrobe really clean but the thought makes me ill. I do out all new-to-me knitwear in the freezer before washing but not sure if that helps or not.

OP posts:
dudsville · 08/07/2023 20:52

Oh god, I'm now in to the moth chat bit. I have giant hand made bags of lavender and cedar rings between each jumper. It's that enough or do i need to do more?

My nan had a lovely huge built in closet lined in cedar. My mum has it now. It's a thing of pure beauty.

dudsville · 08/07/2023 20:59

@OftenOrange , that kind of tweaking is something i really love doing. I think it's a great idea!
