Nothing to do with the thread, but à propos Jane Birkin, I really like Charlotte Gainsbourg's album 5:55.

botemp · 18/07/2023 11:49

Interesting, Jane Birkin’s Gallic style booms on resale sites after her death, must admit I did Google the La Redoute collection Flo mentioned, more out of curiosity than wanting to buy, but who knows...

<Makes note to look up that album by Charlotte Gainsbourg> Instead of lobbing grenades I shall just instantly acknowledge I am a music heathen and had no idea she sang too.

Ha, I always assume the skinny jeans or death crowd are older as it's so tied in with the flattering mentality (which I'm quite glad the younger crowd are not ruled by in the same way)

Is "flattering" synonymous with "show off your figure/ show off your curves"? I've been on a " Find me a wow dress" thread where there's clearly a difference of opinion on what makes a "wow dress"

On demographics, I would be surprised if there are many under 30s. I get the impression there's a heap of 30 to 40 year olds who (a) have very odd ideas about what "grandmothers" should wear (or put up with) and (b) are very conservative about what they will wear.

I don't mean "conservative" in the sense of "modest dressing" but "conservative" in the sense of not wanting to look different from everyone else. (So "conservative" in the modest sense can actually be less "conservative")

Floisme · 19/07/2023 08:03

I don't think the skinny jeans thing is really about what's flattering though - they're no more flattering than any other style and arguably far less for a lot of body shapes. But your eye adjusts with time so to me, the insistence that no other shape is as flattering is an indication of not having being exposed at length to any other style. Which is a long winded way of saying I tend to think most are between around 35 and about ...50? My maths might be wrong cos skinnies had a grip for so long.

My 'wear what's flattering', phase ran from my mid 40s when I emerged from small-child fug, till I was hitting 60 and decided it was even more draconian than following fashion but without the fun bits. I think I'm kind of arguing against my own point now Grin It's more the newer voices on here that sound younger to me.

botemp · 19/07/2023 08:29

Yeah, I think we're both falling prey to the media/political framing that voices that don't sound like you must be your generational opposite <munches on overpriced avocado toast> when really, in all likelihood, we're just the oddballs.

Well what is flattering is individual, but WRT to skinnies I think there is an undertone of it showing off your body at your slimmest (which caters to the female gaze of this generation of roughly 40-55, Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, etc being the perceived ideal) and shows off your body in an uncomplicated way (which caters to the male gaze without it looking like you're expressly soliciting it). That's my crackpot theory anyhow for its enduring loyalty where it's almost becomes an identity on here.

Going back a bit, sorry - @botemp, you said I'm glad you like the LLS dress Crkd because they have the worst and illegal return policy on sales (basically, no returns allowed).

I’m generally pretty careful about ‘Final Sale’ notices, and never buy from places that have them. There is no indication on the Shop section of the site that Sale goods can’t be returned. There’s no mention of such a restriction in the available info on the site. In the Legal Terms small print there’s a restriction under an Article they don’t set out - it seems to concern counterfeiting within the EU. (Every second of European Law in my 20th century degree was sadly wasted!) And the follow up email I’ve received from them actually invites me to return my item, for refund, subject to the usual conditions.

Perhaps they’ve revised their policies since your (presumably infuriating) experience? Annoyingly I don’t need to send the dress back - otherwise I could test their process properly!

botemp · 19/07/2023 19:00

It's good to be fact checked Crkd, it definitely was the case previously but it does look like someone pointed out how illegal that was. It only ever prevented me from ordering, so good to know it's not longer the case. Now to resist ordering lots of sale items...

OP posts:
MmePoppySeedDefage · 19/07/2023 21:38

I'm now boycotting the Outnet because they refunded the cost of the item I returned, but not the postage. Humph.

Redandblue11 · 25/07/2023 08:03

Anyone doing homage to Barbie? 😁
a sliver of pink anyone?

I hope is all quiet here because you are all enjoying the summer!

NatashaDancing · 25/07/2023 08:41

I wore this yesterday. I often wear it with raspberry pink pointy ballet flats but had low heeled green suede courts yesterday.

NRBY Pinkish Tana Lawn dress

Ageism is rampant at the moment on here. "Grannies' clothes", "grannyish" "mumsy" "spinsters hiding bingo wings" are just useful descriptors apparently.

Redandblue11 · 25/07/2023 10:04

I am in the office today and wearing a hot pink linen mix blazer and a white broderie anglaise top.
Girlier than my usual attire.

[I stay away from most of those threads, I don’t really have the inclination to engage with that]

mm47 · 25/07/2023 12:12

have been away and then hosting back to back guests, waved the last off this morning. I love pink on other people but apart from a pale pink brushed cotton winter nightdress I don’t think I have anything. With your colouring Red I imagine Barbiecore could be fun! And Natasha that dress is really pretty. I imagine it would be a train crash of a thread within three posts but maybe someone could start on compiling a list of unacceptable words and their acceptable alternatives? (I’m too scared to do it but for those who enjoy watching F1 racing for the crashes or SkiSunday for the falls it would be required reading!) Runs for tin hat and keeps fingers crossed …. 😈

mm47 · 25/07/2023 12:14

Edit Start one ie I meant a separate thread

botemp · 25/07/2023 19:28

Please, no, if people want strictly regulated nicey nicey conversations where no one can say anything that might possibly upset someone they can go to Facebook groups (where everyone is just an asshole behind everyone else's back in private convos). As much as MN can be a bit of a hellhole, the good thing is that people can say stupid things and can be countered, or, if preferred, counter stupid things to perfectly legitimate posts. I think the only issue is, is that MN is getting too big and shapeless. It doesn't feel as much of a community and then people aren't as invested anymore to constantly counter careless comments, or it's a part of the site that's so insular it's like an echo chamber.

I'm all for banning the conspiracy adjacent JAQing off sunscreen posters here on S&B, though.

As much as I loved Barbies as a child, much to my mother's horror, I'm really annoyed with the massive marketing push. Especially confusing to little girls as it's everywhere but the movie itself is not age appropriate for them.

I did see a whole special setup in a Zara shop and some teenage girls seemed to genuinely have fun with it and the display box for taking pictures so I'm not overly mad at it either, just very much over it now.

I will credit it to keeping me out of my inbox as it seems to be flooded with Barbie adjacent promotional emails that I can't be bothered to open.

But I've been a bit under the weather since yesterday and very sleepy, and did somehow manage to order a Sacai skirt in the Browns sale late last night (not too sleepy to have used an extra 20% code <pats sleepy self>). I really must have been somewhat out of it to agree to paying the ridiculously high shipping costs though (which, following Poppy's experience, just checked, not refundable in case of a return either 😱). Anyhow, it looks nice enough...

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 25/07/2023 20:49

I don’t think it was meaning line that Bo about nice conversations. I personally was talking about not engaging with trolls and conspiracies.
I lasted long enough here where we don’t all agree 😁

My Barbie comment was very much tongue in cheek btw , I was hoping some will make an ironic comment. But my writing got lost in translation probably / maybe without context is difficult to judge if I wanted to make a joke or if I was serious [I did wear a pink linen jacket today btw]

sorry you are under the weather, I personally find being under the weather in summer worse than in winter.

botemp · 26/07/2023 09:14

Red, I was more responding to mm's thread idea of banned S&B words, which I'm sure was not serious and would need a light-hearted disclaimer to go with it and would still end up as a spectacular bun fight and my sleepy brain was then off on a tangent. I do wish MNHQ was more vigilant about the soft conspiracy adjacent type posters, I can see the argument of letting it stand but there's a tipping point.

People can get excited about Barbie, I'm not that bothered, embrace the pink, it's the volume of marketing that's annoying me but I suspect I fit into the algorithm somehow. How they know I was a massive Barbie fiend as a child, I don't know. Now that I've typed the name a few times I will, inevitably, be deluged with even more marketing. I wasn't planning on seeing the movie, maybe I'd have watched it when it's streaming but reviews are tepid so I won't bother then either. I really hated Gerwin's version of Little Women (granted the book and original film were everything to me when I was coming of age so it was always going to fall short) so there really isn't much to sell me on. I think that's my main gripe, pretending that this very carefully constructed PR campaign is some sort of organic trend that everyone wants to jump on, but aside from the teenage girls in Zara and young girls who are miffed they're not allowed to see the movie I've yet to witness this excitement. The Barbenheimer meme thing does seem to be somewhat organic and feels genuinely buzzy. Anyhow the marketing overload for Barbie seems to have worked for the box office numbers, so what do I know (I'm curious if they can measure the Barbenheimer effect though).

And, yes , being sickly in summer is worse because I can never tell if my temps are elevated or I'm just hot from the weather. It's not too bad though, I'm mostly just sleepy, fine for a bit and half convinced I'm on the mend and then I need to crash and have a nap. I seem to be holding up better today so hopefully that's the end of it.

OP posts:
mm47 · 26/07/2023 09:28

bo I was being facetious ie the thread I suggested would surely qualify as a spectator sport! But my grammar could’ve been better which would’ve made my intention clearer.🤡

mm47 · 26/07/2023 09:36

red sorry didn’t realise you were being tongue in cheek (why should I be the only one?) but I do think you could look good in Barbie pink - if not a whole outfit…

bo sorry you’re feeling lousy, I agree with red that illness in summer somehow feels harder to bear - probably because in winter it’s quite nice to hibernate whereas in summer it feels like you’re missing out on the fun. If you’re up to it would love to see photo of Sacai skirt and bravo for nonetheless getting an extra discount despite the fug of drowsiness.

Off to see someone making a couple of pieces for me will report back when they are finished. 😍😘

botemp · 26/07/2023 09:59

No worries mm, I got the facetious gist of it, but my brain felt like responding like a serious person for some reason 🤷

I'm very curious as to what you're having made, do tell...

OP posts:
ToEllewithIt · 26/07/2023 14:24

I'm keen to see the movie actually, is it outright inappropriate for a 7 year-old?

I have the most Barbie handbag ever. I give you the Luella Giselle. I think I was about 20 when I bought it. It's surely due a revival. It's in a box in the attic that's earmarked for fancy dress. Maybe I should get it down. It's certainly the anthesis of my current aesthetic. Maybe I'll get a ruched tight dress and go for a full Y2K look.

Les Parisiennes des Mamanset: A Sin of Pride
botemp · 26/07/2023 15:07

Take that bag to the movie! Yes, it's meant to be 13+. As best I understand it it's more of a film as performed by Barbies, or as little girls would play with Barbies but then for adults if that makes sense. It's supposed to be a feminist take on it (Ken is a bit of an accessory, as he tends to be when little girls play with Barbies) but it'll be the Hollywood approved version of it. I mean I sort of get it, interesting concept if not necessarily unique with an opposite world of what most movies are with well fleshed out male characters accompanied by manic pixie dream girls that exist entirely for male lead's self actualisation. But apparently in terms of performance Ken (or rather the actor) steals the show somewhat so 🤷

In other news, I should have known having the polar opposite body type of Japanese women would bite me in the butt (the offender in this case, actually). Sacai skirt is scandalously short because of my ample behind so I shall have to return it Sad

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 26/07/2023 18:02

If you go Elle pls share your outfit

I want that report back Mm!

shame about the sacai skirt Bo. Yes Japanesse women are definitely cut differently.

mm47 · 26/07/2023 20:19

Hello again! The weekend FT said what bo said ie the Ken character has really done well. If I could walk/ tube it to a cinema I’d go but am not burning to drive miles to see it. But if I had a bag in the attic like yours Elle I would have to go so that I could take it with me - it’s made for a Barbie outing!

How infuriating that the Sacai skirt is a no-no, bo but at least it gave you something to look forward to while feeling sonlousy.

I think I was being a bit pretentious (a La Miss Piggy) as it’s more “things” than “pieces”: I was introduced to a leather worker locally and have asked her to make me (1) a larger version in tan leather of my Danish Salvation Army repurposed sealskin fur coat crossbody bag (phew bit of a mouthful) and (2) I saw she had a rather nice old leather crupper so have asked her to make me a belt - not an identikit to the Bottega Veneta one but a riff on that theme. So neither piece exactly cutting edge but if they work out I will be delighted!

will post when finished.

mm47 · 26/07/2023 20:20

SO lousy (- Ed.)
