Oh - that is beautiful, @mm47, the sort of thing I’d wear to death. The leather looks so … inviting.

mm47 · 30/07/2023 12:02

Crkd honestly am a bit of a leather fiend, the smell, texture etcetcetc. Makes it such fun to clean / feed shoes boots belts etc.

mm47 · 30/07/2023 12:37

just to clarify am not a leather fetishist, just it has so many wonderful textures etc

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 30/07/2023 15:53

I am ever so slightly fetishistic about horse hair … Not particularly horsey, but there’s something about it that grabs my attention. I’m slightly sad it’s no longer the default stuffing for mattresses - though I suppose that’s a good thing? (No idea!)

mm47 · 30/07/2023 16:03

Crkd horsehair mattresses make me think of the ancient U shaped ones at school. The Pollyannaish ie deluded positive was that the draughts passed over the top (except they didn’t….)! But I did like the crinkly sound. I’ve only ever seen horsehair fabrics in magazines like Interiors so have no idea what it feels like. I wonder if it could be used for clothing or if it is too stiff?

Flo love the juxtaposition of Tana lawn and utility jacket. Do you remember that fantastic ad for Liberty in the late 80s of workmen wearing donkey jackets which had Liberty fabric on the shoulder part (technical tailoring term)?

Floisme · 30/07/2023 16:13

No I don't mm47 but I'm off to see if google can remind me, thanks!

mm47 · 30/07/2023 16:34

flo I’ve been trying to find it since I posted. Can’t find the advert but at least I found a jacket

It was the male models’ expressions, they’d obviously been picked to look like tough workmen and one of them was posing I think with his hand behind his head IIRC and it was just such a sweet funny image.

botemp · 30/07/2023 17:59

I have horsehair mattresses. They're brilliant, not the Hästens ones though as they were far too squishy and soft, but of similar make, all natural materials with springs and stuff. They're just partially horsehair though, not entirely full of it. It did smell rather horsey in the bedroom when they were brand new.

Speaking of bedrooms, what you and your leather get up to in there is not for us to judge mm 😉 lovely whip belt you got there, she's very quick to deliver. It's reminding me of a young designer I came across in Antwerp when I was last there, her work was being showcased in a shop and she was also very insistent that she wanted no sexual associations with it while the shop manager was trying to encourage here to sell it at some sex convention. I kind of saw his point of the association is there regardless might as well make some money off of it 🤷 but then again I've never been an artistic puritan. Here's her insta, only real online presence she has, it was very nice work, but prices were a bit high for something that you wouldn't get a lot of wear out of, but definitely one to keep an eye on.

🤡😉🤣🤣🤣

mm47 · 30/07/2023 18:17

Gosh bo on a very quick scan of her Instagram- her stuff is so beautiful, I would definitely wear that in my alternative life as a gallerist (obviously I have no idea how incredibly hard they work so not at all a judgment call in gallerists but in my imagination it’s all about swanning about at exhibitions wearing stunning, interesting clothes…)

mm47 · 30/07/2023 18:18

On not in (-Ed.)

mm47 · 30/07/2023 18:22

Modern horse hairy sprung Hastens-level mattress sounds utterly deliciously luxy and a very far cry from my pore little dorm bed. 🐎 🛏️

botemp · 30/07/2023 18:28

If I had to guess, the job with the highest percentage of privileged trustafarians with limited life skills, my first guess would be gallerists. It does seem to demand mostly being able to tap into a certain network and being fluent in that particular subset of society's codes, operating a photo copy machine, not so much.

Buyer reps are propper grafters though. Auction house workers are a very mixed bag, especially at the big name ones.

Yes they're heavenly luxurious, now you know why I always grumble over hotel beds. I'd quite like a sofa made in traditional style (also with horsehair and springs and things), but they all tend to be oldy worldy styled (predictably).

Horsehair canvas is a staple of traditional tailoring btw, so it is in some clothes. You have to preshrink it in water before use. I didn't think that wet dog smell could be worse, but it's definitely wet horse (hair canvas) 🤢 it's very springy. I think Margiela had a horsehair love affair and incorporated it, Ann Demeulemeester as well but hers was more limited to accessories.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 30/07/2023 19:14

Yup, I’m sure in years long gone I’ve come across it from both of those.

Also recall seeing a horsehair lampshade in Interiors once! I felt such unreasonable desire for the stupid, pointless thing.

Redandblue11 · 30/07/2023 23:30

Right. Now you lot are onto my favourite topic : Gallerists.
I am working towards being one 😏

Redandblue11 · 31/07/2023 08:30

mm that belt is so good, and so you!
how did you get it done? Did you show the maker one to copy?

mm47 · 31/07/2023 10:04

Morning Red! The belt came about because when I visited the leather worker’s studio she had some ancient saddles and other horsey stuff lying around which she intended to unpick and reuse the leather. I happened to see the crupper (the rounded thing) and it reminded me of a Bottega Veneta belt I’d admired ahe’s ago. I showed her a picture and asked if she could make me something along the same lines, but not a copy. I had to wait a while as she was quite busy and we met again to fiddle about and try to work out what exactly I would like but I’m really pleased with it.

bo Crkd I think I’ve seen horsehair makes great fabulous chair/sofa covers because it’s hard wearing. Love the idea of horsehair lampshades. When you say horsehair is used in tailoring, do you mean as padding or as a woven material - not sure what it’s called - but the material you mount the tweed or wool on to stabilise it?

Floisme · 31/07/2023 11:08

Ooh I think we might have had a horsehair sofa when I was a child but sadly there's no-one left who would know for certain. It was extremely prickly and uncomfortable and I didn't like it at all but at least we were allowed to jump up and down on it and generally mistreat it. Then we got a new one and my mum put a cover over it and made us take our shoes off before we sat down Grin

botemp · 31/07/2023 11:29

Yes it's the material used to pad stitch on, they call it hair canvas but it's not all hair, it's hairs suspended between a fabric of sorts. I've yet to see horsehair in a fabric form, it would be quite itchy. I do wonder where the hairs come from, is it from the horse meat industry or are there horses running around with shortened tails 🤔

I love that anecdote Flo, we had a very modernist, capital M, sofa that had high credentials for design but was the most uncomfortable thing ever. The architect who designed it (Rietveld) used to say chairs <and by extension sofas> are for sitting, nothing more if you want to be comfortable go to bed. My preference for beds is not accidental...

I remember those Liberty lawn-lined classic jackets because I had one of the Levi Trucker style, that I bought from their shop in Canterbury. It must have been 1988/89 because the in-laws moved to Sussex soon after. The jackets were lovely, but the lawn doesn't make a sturdy lining for the hard wear it was given.

Adding my admiration for the crupper belt: I now covet one!

Floisme · 31/07/2023 15:44

That's a very good point, Desmond. Going to think about it a bit longer. I have plenty of other projects to be getting on with, even if they're mostly in my head.

Redandblue11 · 31/07/2023 18:31

Oh! Clever mm! The crupper belt. Genius.
