That Ramona is very Helena Bonham Carter I think. There's something very seaweed like about the tendril of tweed.

I have a couple of Philip Treacy hats. One is a big showy race-day affair and the other is a lovely straw cream and black wide brimmed hat. I also got a hat from Awon Golding (who is the chief designer for Lock & Co) and it's lovely too, but also formal.

I'd love a fedora or a medium brimmed cloche in felt. I like the Phileas from Kiri Sato and I like the simplicity of this too: https://www.lockhatters.com/collections/women-felt-hats-fedoras-trilbies/products/turner-wide-brim-cloche

I've always loved this hat of Meghan's though I think it may be her face, rather than the hat doing the heavy lifting here.

There used to be a wonderful milliner in your city Flo. My DSis and DM bought several hats from her.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 01/09/2023 17:44

it may be her face

Indeed! My own face is sadly full moon shaped at the moment so I’d need a hat to distract, rather than frame.

@Floisme It’s been good to have a prompt to reacquaint myself with hat retailers. That Highland Duchess is a treasure - you’d never want to take it off. Such fantastic structure and stroke-worthy tweed.

Amongst my own clan the most ancient wears one of a selection of Rosie Sugden cashmere turbans all on year round, and looks very fine in family photos.

I’m thinking that as a step up from a beanie I could probably manage one of these …

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 01/09/2023 17:50

But if I properly wanted to be noticed …

The grey plaited band looks especially compatible with my post-lockdown head - I can completely see myself wearing that without too much fuss. But the Stephen Jones would so suit my more louche clothes. Dunno about the tendrils, I really don’t live that kind of life, but it’s so pretty.

Floisme · 01/09/2023 18:09

Oh I love that red Stephen Jones Crkd - it's like wearing art on your head.

Sara Tiara (The Highland Duchess hat) looks amazing. She does Harris tweed coats as well..... It might well be the end of me.

I remember you telling me that Desmond, long gone sadly, I think it's a kebab shop now. Or a nailbar.

EffortlessDesmond · 01/09/2023 20:42

|The loss of Madame Marie of Division St is to be forever lamented. Flo, but maybe they pop up in your local charity shops?

mm47 · 01/09/2023 21:00

What utterly glorious hats! Although to me they all seem occasion hats (for lack of imagination or bravery (or both on my part). It would make my day to see someone wearing any one of those and I would definitely wish I knew whoever was wearing them if I saw them on the street!

banivani · 01/09/2023 21:15

My dears, I've been afk or at least afmn for a bit - loving the hats. Sadly I'm not up to scrolling through everything I've missed - if anyone wants to recap the recent news, please do, so I get up to speed.

I'm a sartorial bore recently so have nothing fun to add to anything sadly. Have there been any big fights on S&B recently? Do we need to fight Flo's corner anywhere?

EffortlessDesmond · 01/09/2023 21:27

Welcome home, Banivani! It's all the usual stuff and chat. We have acquired some Scottish posters who may help bridge the sartorial gaps a bit for you. Hope all is settling down in your life?

banivani · 01/09/2023 22:02

Thank you Diamond - yes, things are pretty calm really, I just haven't been in the headspace for following threads more seriously. Welcome to Scotland - more raincoats and non-slip boots I take it? Nothing wrong with that!

I'm going to need something autumny and non-slippy for my feet this year, maybe Chelsea boot-y, because I've realised that the ones I spent money on to wear for years are murdering my feet. I think they're too big/wide, so my foot rattles around a bit meaning it tenses up in a bad way and I get very stiff feet. I'd like to not have to go full Sketchers, but I haven't found anything yet.

mm47 · 01/09/2023 22:35

Hello bani glad to see the hat discussion has flushed you out of the undergrowth! We’ve all been trundling along on here BUT as far as I can see the drama has been on other threads; people like flo have definitely been earning their right to wear esoteric headwear (as much as a warning to the rest of us not to mess with them as a style statement …🤡)

botemp · 02/09/2023 07:37

<Waves excitedly at Bani, while briefly giving her the stink eye for having to think way too long what afk means, as someone whose been on the internet since ca 1993 I really should have recognised that instantly>

Drama seems to have settled down generally on the board, I don't know if it's the time of year or that MNHQ is getting better at removing certain types of posters, I'm going with the former explanation anyhow as we now have an edit button and surely that has been taking up all of their precious time 🧐

Would the Blundstone boots work for you, I think quirky has a pair, they come with different sole options. Chelsea boots are awful for my feet though with the whole high arches thing, just in case that is you too.

I love this simple hat by Hatrix:

https://www.fabhatrix.com/rita-493

Rather reminds me of how in Diary of a Provincial Lady, our heroine was always on the lookout for a becoming hat. I can imagine her wearing this.

Floisme · 02/09/2023 10:12

Breaking away from my hat obsession to say hi to bani. I've missed you.

If you want to find a good fight, I'd say the best ones at the moment are either on wedding outfit threads which I don't post on very often as I don't know what I'm talking about (yes I know some might say it doesn't normally stop me), or they're about midi floral dresses still.

Speaking of the latter, Jess Cartner Morley has just poured petrol on the fire with a Guardian column about how tea dresses are the newest new thing. As they sound and look pretty much the same as the old flowery dresses, I'm anticipating an S&B fight breaking out at any moment. I would link to the article but I'm trying to be a better person.

botemp · 02/09/2023 10:33

I saw that and was very much puzzled, I do get the sense JCM has sort of been pivoting away from writing about fashion at large and more to what would appeal to your average Guardian reader and it kind of ends up reading a bit like wear whatever is in your closet already. I read her much less than I used to as a result.

I forgot we did have drama on this very thread, a proper pizza-gate. Not sure how healthy it is to bring it up again 😉

Yes, I ignore anything wedding related on here (although there was a show me your unconventional wedding dress thread a while back that was quite nice) so that's probably why I'm missing the big bun fights.

It's typical Jess Carter- Morley- 1000 words to say nothing. She's such a dull writer.

Have you ever seen packets of biscuits with weird "serving suggestions"? i.e "weird" because they're bleedin' obvious - e.g photos of biscuits on a plate. Carter- Morley's writing is the same "clothes - styling suggestions - put them on"

And as if anyone doesn't know what a tea dress is.

banivani · 02/09/2023 13:59

I think I mean Blundstone style boots when I say Chelsea boots, I just mean low boots really, as they're handy. They have Blundstone on Zalando so I'll bear them in mind, but they look a little riding boot-y some of them. God I don't know. Suspect I'm two years behind and am ready to fancy a stompy sole now - am definitely ready to fancy a higher low boot, one of those that go a bit up the calf? I wanted that last year but couldn't be arsed to look.

How can anyone argue about pizza. Now hamburgers - sure. Over-rated dish. But bread with melted cheese? Always acceptable. Generally speaking we eat "Turkish" pizza here apparently - an Irish young relation called it that, I don't know if it is because pizzerias here are run by ME people so the bread runs to the Levantish type. But it's not Domino's style, which I've had once and feel is over-rated. Then there are hipster places ofc. I like anything but want them to cook it long enough, they often are in a bit of a hurry IMO to take it out. Come to Sweden anyway for delicacies like an entire kebab with fries as a topping for pizza! They go off-piste here.

I've been wanting to get myself a floral midi dress for ages but couldn't find anything I liked - as usual Swedish shops were very limited and limiting style-wise so I've not seen anything - so IMO they can feck off with their "we're done now" opinion, we were never IN on it. I've seen two colleagues wear midi floral dresses with white sneakers one time and I remember thinking "it's the uniform they talk about on Mumsnet"! but it was only that once. A tea dress IS A FLORAL MIDI. Jesus. Flo I'm with you. Well doesn't have to be floral maybe. Natasha - I trust no-one anymore with definitions. The amount of times I sort dresses by "maxi" in online shops so I can look at the midi dresses. God I'm getting genuinely worked up about this now, so annoyed!

Tip: The Rest is History just had two episodes on the fashion of the 60s - nothing super new to you lot maybe but a fun listen.

The move from hats to no hats is such an interesting paradigm shift I think! 1940:s "how to choose a hat shape to flatter your face, a hat finishes an outfit, becoming hats" 1960s - "hats are old hat".

Thank you, I'll be here all weekend.

Redandblue11 · 02/09/2023 15:05

You have come back Bani. Welcome back.

That beanie with netting is very sweet. But could be seen as funeral wear …

So In one of my local charity shops I saw this pure rabbit fur with feathers hat and I tried it on just for you Flo. It doesn’t sit properly on my head though, a tad too small.
I actually have a weird shape head which looks average size but the top circumference is actually bigger than usual, but doesn’t show it, consequently I have always struggled to find good fitting hats (on your run of the mill shops, I am sure I can find for my size in some of the lovely shops suggested up thread).

Les Parisiennes des Mamanset: A Sin of Pride
Redandblue11 · 02/09/2023 15:08

Yeah, that blah blah blah from JCM about tea dresses vs floral midi … I was like - uh?!
Bani, is never too late for a floral midi. You go for it if you fancy , mine are still being worn.

Floisme · 02/09/2023 17:09

Thank you Natasha and Red for more hat pics. I'd looked at Fabhatrix because I'd remembered a recommendation on S&B - probably from you Natasha.
Red I have a similar fitting thing with hats - I often need to try on a bigger size than I expect.

So if we've only got you for the weekend then bani, then we'd better make the most of you. I might have been joining you in a search for some decent shoes / boots, in fact I'd been toying with splashing out on some Joseph Cheaney brogue or Chelsea boots, but not if I'm going to piss away / invest my saved up pension pennies on a hat.

My pizza stance (for bani's benefit, everyone else knows and is shocked to the core) is that I've no objection at all to a proper one, say in Naples. I've just got little time for tomato pure and dried herbs on bread, which is what passes for pizza a lot of the time round here. And yes Dominos are a prime example.

I think a JCM column on how to wear what you've already got in your closet while keeping it current would be good. She nearly gets there but then seems to lose her nerve, probably because it would piss off all the advertisers.

NatashaDancing · 02/09/2023 17:50

I think a JCM column on how to wear what you've already got in your closet while keeping it current would be good. She nearly gets there but then seems to lose her nerve, probably because it would piss off all the advertisers.

That's exactly what she was struggling to say-"those of you who have already got below the knee floral dresses - you can wear them again ! " but with no indication of what you might do to update it

It seems a bit pointless. Wouldn't the demographic of Guardian readers who are also floral dress wearers largely consist of people who can work the first part out for themselves but help on the second part would be useful.

Fair point about advertisers - although does any clothing brand apart from Gudrun Sjoden place ads in the Guardian ? Maybe they do online - I only read the Guardian print edition and only on a Saturday for the recipes.

Tbf she's not as precious as Anna Murphy. I think Murphy is generally good at selecting things but The Times often turns off comments on her articles because she can't stand criticism and will wade into respond.

botemp · 02/09/2023 17:59

Hmm, that's not at all how I remember it Flo, where have those fighting anti pizza words of yours gone to 🧐 I distinctly remember you saying something along the lines of not understanding what all the fuzz is about people salivating over pizza. Now that Bani is clearly team pizza you're suddenly changing your tune to some pizzas are more edible than others...

WRT french fries on pizza, for all their scathing of pineapple on pizza the Italians have their own abomination in Pizza Americana which is pizza with french fries, hot dogs (no buns) and I think ketchup.

I can't remember where I read it so perhaps it all came to me in a dream. But iirc hats went out of fashion because they were primarily to protect your hairstyle from when you next saw the hairdresser (which was a weekly thing) and/or had your hair set/done. I can't remember if it was women entering the work force more or just the popularity of wearing hair lose and the advent of shampoo that finally made hats obsolete. I like a hat, I actually look better with a hat, I've got one of those hat faces but proper hats are just not very lifestyle accomadating aside from sunny holidays. I love it when it's cold enough for woolly hats though, and will wear one at any opportunity.

Tbh I think the JCM column is at a bit of a crossroads, the whole lifestyle section of the Guardian seems to suffer with an identity crisis and it feels a bit lost at sea and most contributions feel half hearted efforts (although there is a rather horrifying article about beauty addicts on there today that's worth reading, at least I assume it was in the lifestyle section). But for the record, I'd never heard of tea dresses before I came to MN, it's not terminology used outside the UK IME.

Have you checked Sellpy for floral dresses Bani, I continually get those suggested on there as there seem to be loads.
