I have a bunch of sewing projects lined up for a/w so I've not had much an of an itch of 'needing' anything yet.

Are you talking hats or proper old fashioned hats Flo, the latter I find fairly useless in a/w on account of the weather (wind mostly) but always being on a bike probably has a lot to do with that.

I could have sworn American Vintage is French, Crkd, are you sure you're not confusing them with another brand (except which 🤔 Bellerose, maybe? Kinda similar to Bensimon but that's definitely French). You can probably do Antwerp shopping highlights in an afternoon but it'd require a bit of discipline and good navigation skills, only thing I'd warn for is that Belgian train stations is not anywhere I'd want to be around after dark, especially Brussels midi.

Floisme · 30/08/2023 09:32

Oh yes the hat I want will almost certainly be useless in the rain and too big to fit into a bag. But I want it anyway, even though I've not found it yet.

Not a fascinator.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 30/08/2023 09:46

Oh, I didn’t mean American Vintage is Belgian, @botemp - they just photoed their A/W collection in Antwerp! (I should have written more clearly.)

mm47 · 30/08/2023 09:47

flo fedora / trilby type of hat?

Redandblue11 · 30/08/2023 10:04

Maybe a ‘cannot go wrong’ beret?

Haven’t been in this new thread so forgive me if this has already been mentioned but there’s an excellent exhibition at the National Museum of Edinburgh called ‘beyond the little black dress’ which I saw on Monday ( we went up for the final weekend of the festival and it was nice but stressful , flight back was cancelled and family member who was looking after DD had to take an extra day off to look after her while we tried to get a train).

posting a few photos which may be of interest , will try to remember which designer is which!

Crkd, I think that's just revealing I don't read the text that go with pictures Blush (in my defence, those pictures didn't really scream Antwerp).

I had seen some coverage of that exhibition sooverthemill and did wonder if it was any good, as much as I like a black dress I wasn't sure how enjoyable rooms upon rooms of them could be. Sorry to hear about flight cancellations, that must have been stressful but hopefully being in Edinburgh made up for it.

I have also seen some coverage of that exhibition somewhere sooverthemill . Good to hear it is very good, I suppose it is good if you are there and want to see something, maybe not do a trip to go and see it type thing?

oh, you were also trapped in those flights delays … I heard from a few people affected by the same.

Sooverthemill · 30/08/2023 14:54

@botemp @Redandblue11 it was interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even DH found some parts of interest. It looked at the history of mourning dress and the radical nature of Chanel’s little black dress in the 1920s plus the ways in which black can still be revolutionary. Also, so many stunningly beautiful garments from Vivienne Westwood to Steve McQueen to Dior! We didn’t go up just for that but I was very happy to know I could go. I spoke to one of the staff and he said that the response had been amazing

Redandblue11 · 30/08/2023 15:21

Steve McQueen? (Or Alexander)

Tbf, £300-800 dresses are out of reach for probably 90% of posters on here. Even £120 will exclude a good chunk of posters. When no budget is mentioned it's usually safe to assume it's mid high street with a possibility to stretch to upper end of the high street if it's a special occasion. And realistically, I could spend £300-800 on a dress but if I'd be asking for a specific occasion dress on MN because nothing already in my wardrobe would suit it's highly unlikely I'd want to spend that kind of money for a one off event either.

Just coming back to this. It didn't occur to me when making suggestions (at any price range) that they would only be for one off events. The last dress I bought specifically for a wedding was in 2017 -this dress but in navy. I've worn it loads since and it'll be turning up at a work black tie dinner in October.

I am a big fan of a hat, @Floisme. I have a lovely dark green hat which is kind of a wonky pill box shape (I would post a photo, but it’s one of a kind and might identify me). I aim to make myself a beautiful coat to wear it with.

@Sooverthemill your pictures look great! Is it a touring exhibition? I quite fancy a long weekend in Edinburgh though…

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 31/08/2023 05:32

Gravitas, huh?

A tedious backstory means I’ve been swerving any such quality for half my life, so am far more drawn to bright pink raggedy beanies - but I’ve had a look anyway …

Ah yes, his brother?😂

Floisme · 31/08/2023 07:35

Thank you everyone for all the hat suggestions. I fell down a rabbit (or should that be habbit?) hole yesterday: posh hatters, crazy mad hatters, country clothing outfitters, Etsy... the next thing I knew it was dark. This is what retirement can do to a person.

I've got a couple of berets already thanks Red - but that's a great website! I've also got a men's Harris tweed cap, and used to have a trilby but don't know what happened to it, think I left it somewhere, which is always the risk with hats that don't fit into your bag.

And I've got a small collection of vintage hats from way back when you could pick them up for a few quid. But they'll all be a bit fragile now to wear again, and too Bette Davis dress-up.

So this is not a total flight of fancy although it's an urge I've not felt for some time. But before I go any further I need to go and check out Gamble and Gunn - thank you Crkd!

Floisme · 31/08/2023 07:43

And sorry sooverthemill didn't mean to ignore your posts. Thanks for the exhibition tip, it looks really interesting. Only on till the end of October unfortunately so I'm unlikely to see it unless they go on tour. Sorry the trip home was so bad - I know you find it hard to get away.

Voltefarce · 31/08/2023 07:50

@Floisme I love Sahar Millinery Here. I also have a couple of hats from Holland Cooper and Hicks & Brown which are better for day to day.

If we're just adding links for the rabbit hole, my contribution is Kiriko Sato a Japanese designer based in Paris. You need to scroll down in the eShop to get to the winter hats. From the new A/W collection I'm particularly taken with the Phileas in electric blue (I have the straw version), the Noa in camel and red, and the Mollusca and am enjoying the beret couronne. But I think there's some more coming as per their a/w pdf presentation.

It's not a touring exhibition. It's been curated by the National Museum of Scotland. It runs until end of October. I haven't seen it yet.

Sooverthemill · 31/08/2023 08:29

@NatashaDancing and @Voltefarce inwas coming on to reply. No it’s not a touring exhibition, mores the pity. Really worth seeing

MmePoppySeedDefage · 31/08/2023 08:47

I love wearing hats too, summer and winter.

I've had a few disasters with winter hats – once I left a beautiful Stephen Jones hat on the train, coming back from a funeral, and once a slightly-too-big hat flew off my head thanks to a gust of wind and landed in a London Square garden – which was all locked up. Frantic emails to the administrators didn't give any help, so that was lost too...

It hasn't really been hot or cold enough recently for me to wear my hats much and I still have a winter one that I bought about four years ago that still has its tags on. However I know one day I'll wear it: it's a chic little tip-tilted black number, trimmed with feathers. I love the Kirokosato collection.

I follow the royalhats.net blog. Not so much for the fashion & hats, but it is often very interesting about hats in general, their materials and their making. It's a bit scathing sometimes about the quality of the hats, by Fabienne Delvigne, worn by the (exuberant), Queen of The Netherlands, and less-exuberant Queen of Belgium.

Redandblue11 · 31/08/2023 22:11

The weather feels like autumn here so this hat talk is very fitting!!

Floisme · 01/09/2023 15:23

Thanks again to everyone who's made suggestions. I hadn't realised how many of you are hat lovers - admittedly it's been a while since I was really into them myself. Anyway I've had a great time looking at them all and my sidebar is now full of hats!

No decision yet. I'm always drawn to a hat with a bit of theatre, e.g. this one by Sara Tiara or this bespoke one But I know I'm in danger of tipping into costume drama (unless my son were to get married in which case watch out).

Also, while I've saved up a bit of money for an Autumn treat, I'm wary of splashing out on something that could so easily get left in a cab or on the bus, let alone blown off my head Shock So a trilby or a fedora, both of which come at a range of price points, would be a more sensible way forward. I'd have also been very tempted by that 1930s Homburg but it looks like it's sold out, plus cleaning it up might well have become a winter project all on its own.

But I think first I need to a) dig out the vintage hat collection just in case there's something in there (though probably not, they were mainly bits of froth on a headband) and then find a shop or two to visit, because trying on hats, whether you buy one or not, is the best fun.
