At least you were there, @Tarragon123 ! Also at the garden party. What was the event like today?

Can I call dibs on that lovely crown? So much more tasteful than the ones south of the border.

Maireas · 05/07/2023 17:32

@chesterelly1 has claimed the James V crown!

@Maireas - it was lovely. The music was just fabulous! Such a wide variety, something for everyone. I did manage to see Nicola Benedetti and some of the solo singers. And of course, it was great to see what everyone was wearing, a bit like yesterday.

Big crowds outside. Got my photo taken loads (I am not famous, but there was an assumption by the tourists in particular that if you were at the church, then you must be). We could hear the protesters outside, esp during prayers which was very unfortunate. I got shouted at by them as I walked past. Something like ‘you should be hanging your head in shame’. 🙄

A couple of Chinese tourists asked for photos with me, which was very nice and I was happy to do so.

Overall, I thought it was a great service and showed Scotland off very well.

Maireas · 05/07/2023 17:49

That sounds amazing, it's a very special occasion. The music must have been beautiful live, I'd love to hear Nicola Benedetti. Why did you get an invitation?

So exciting, Tarragon123!

Sadly, the service was not telecast here in the US. I did see some YouTube streaming of the procession. I hope there will be a video of the service posted on YouTube later.

Tarragon123 · 05/07/2023 17:55

She was amazing. There was also a man who sang ‘Caledonia’, one of my fav songs and he was incredible. I managed to speak to him outside St Giles and say how much I enjoyed his singing.

I’m a Provost/Convener. Like an English Mayor, but we don’t lead our councils. We are civic heads, 32 of us in total.

Maireas · 05/07/2023 17:57

It must have been a memorable occasion! Something to talk about for years to come!

@SenecaFallsRedux yes! And would you believe, one of the Ministers is American! I forget her name, but she is the Moderator of the Church of Scotland. It was a lovely sermon that she gave and also the ending of the service ‘the worship is over, let the service begin’. Nice

mikado1 · 05/07/2023 18:02

Sorry not in the loop, what were they protesting about?

chesterelly1 · 05/07/2023 18:05

What a wonderful experience for you Tarragon. I thought it was a lovely service

That's really exciting! I wish my mother were alive to see that. She was an elder in the Presbyterian Church USA.

I was a student in Edinburgh many years ago. It's still my favorite place in the world to visit. So many happy memories of the place and the people.

Tarragon123 · 05/07/2023 18:10

@mikado1 - I think the group are called Republica, something like that? Basically chanting ‘Not My King’ and banging a big drum.

Tarragon123 · 05/07/2023 18:11

@SenecaFallsRedux aw! That’s lovely! Edinburgh is such a gorgeous city and does ceremony so well.

Maireas · 05/07/2023 18:12

So many of us on here live in, or have connections to Scotland, and Edinburgh in particular! If your mother was a church elder, @SenecaFallsRedux , do you have connections to or origins in Scotland?

Ah ok. Thanks Tarragon.

Only saw brief video. Catherine and William serious faced today. No walkabouts, waves or smiles I could find. A serious event. The weather looked lovely for the parade

Yes, I do. My many-times great-grandfather emigrated from Argyll to North Carolina in the late 1790s. Scots settlers in that part of North Carolina (Wilmington and environs) tended to stay in the same place for generations and so it was fairly easy to trace ancestry.

Republic! Republica are the 90s Brit pop band who were "ready to go" 🤣

ArcaneWireless · 05/07/2023 18:56

The not my king people speaking on the Scottish news did not speak with a jock tongue.

I wonder if some of the missing 600k paid for a charabanc and T-shirts…

Have an opinion. I love that you can do that in this country.

But puke yellow suits no-one and like it or not he is your king. Suck it up.

Can someone unglue my trotters from my soapbox please 😉

Sorry maireas 🫣

Maireas · 05/07/2023 18:58

Ah, no apologies needed. Free speech and all that!
