My DH suggesting I'm "getting old" because I've ordered from Seasalt

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:27

I saw a lovely wee dress last night on Seasalt, I have some money saved for a clothes makeover and decided to go for it. My DH said last night it was nice but isn't Seasalt for older women 😆 I'm 51 in July and I don't think it looks like an OAP website. Now I'm thinking, shit should I send it back?
I just want a few quality pieces I can add to, I've not bought myself anything in a long long time due to illness. We are going shopping to a shopping centre on Sunday and I'm reluctant to browse with him hovering now x

I’ve got some sea salt tops. I’m 32, make of that what you will 😂

If you talk to a 17 year old, you're positive ancient 😂

It's all relative. We are all getting old anyway!

loveisstrange · 08/06/2023 10:14

Well I'm 33 and have a lovely pair of sea salt socks albeit they were gifted to me, I think they're accessories are nice like silk scarves etc

longwayoff · 08/06/2023 10:16

Ha! Ask his advice again when you're looking for thermals from Damart. So you've got a good 30 years free of his views.

RampantIvy · 08/06/2023 10:18

but jersey fabric with the look of fat face is not for me.

So, just say that instead of being so ageist. Although I agree that it isn't really aimed at teens.

I think it’s great your husband cares what you wear, it shows he is still interested in you.

I also agree that Seasalt is 95% frumpy. But if you like the dress why not try it on as it may look great, or it might not. You won’t know unless you try.

🤣🤣 Good grief!

No, it just demonstrates that he’s a bit of a prick. Criticising someone’s clothing choices is not a sign of love. 🤦🏻‍♀️

If a man wants to show he’s interested in his partner, he listens to her, pays attention and does nice things just for her, possibly even to his own detriment.

Mirabai · 08/06/2023 10:19

I agree with your DH Seasalt is very dowdy. And their sizing is massive.

JenWillsiam · 08/06/2023 10:21

MysteryBelle · 08/06/2023 10:10

I think it’s for old people too. Actually I take that back, it’s simply frumpy. Any age can wear flattering clothing or wear frumpy clothing with hideous patterns and cuts. Most of their clothing is very frumpy. It’s a non for me.

Of course you should wear what you want and your husband was rude. But not wrong 😂

Totally agree.

He did listen to her, paid attention to what she bought, and did a nice thing by telling her the truth, possibly to his own detriment.

😄

i don’t agree I am being ageist. It’s a simple fact. It’s an old look.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 10:23

@Falafelfiend personally I think it looks shit on most women- but was being of generous spirit!! I saw a couple of attractive 30 somethings yesterday in pretty maxi dresses with denim jackets and trainers and to me it was far more flattering - may not be 'on trend' but I'm beyond giving a monkeys about that to be honest.

LorraineInSpain · 08/06/2023 10:23

Mirabai · 08/06/2023 10:19

Please define “dowdy” - objectively, not subjectively. Quite a lot of what they sell isn’t to my taste, but I do have some things from there that look good and wear well. You just have to be a bit selective.

I do agree with you on the sizing. It’s amusing all the reviews that say things are “true to size” when I need to go down at least 2 sizes from my usual.

MummyJ36 · 08/06/2023 10:25

I’m 36 and I’ve got some Seasalt clothes?! How bizarre that he knew of this brand! My DH wouldn’t have a clue!

Softoprider · 08/06/2023 10:26

I do think the biggest mistakes women make when buying clothes are to stick with the popular brands, wearing shapes that do not suit and do not fit. With a brand like Seasalt, the fit is always comfortable and hides rather than accentuates our faults.
Admitting your real size is another major fault. Squishing large breasts into tops that gape because you don't want to concede to being a 16 is one of mine. We are not all stock size. I could not buy a suit because I am a 16 top and 14 bottom. I have to go for separates. There is no shame in being the size you are - you just have to make the best of it and I find Seasalt clothes do just that - make the best of you !

babyproblems · 08/06/2023 10:27

In afraid im with your DH but I wouldn’t use the word ‘old’!! Perhaps ladies who like a particular look! I mean it’s not for the kids imo. It’s very classic/chic. Xo

CruCru · 08/06/2023 10:28

I wear both Seasalt and Lucy and Yak. Seasalt is useful because most of their stuff can be worn to a school assembly, out to meet a friend, out for dinner. If that makes me a frump so be it. I am 44 and need clothes for the person that I am. They are also useful if you are not thin.

Being made of natural fabric means they can go in my compost bin once they are too holey to wear.

People should wear what they want. Being middle aged and only buying clothes that much younger people wear is as strange as deciding at 35 that you are old and have to wear elasticated beige forever more. It's the reason so many middle aged people wore Superdry for so long (and young people no longer shop there).

Kugela · 08/06/2023 10:29

@WoofWoofBeachLife are you sure you really want to go shopping with your clothes snob DH? If he only buys designer stuff he’ll turn his nose up at anything that he considers too cheap. Get him to take you out somewhere nice for lunch instead (unless he thinks he’s too special to sit and actually eat food with other people!) Smile

I like Seasalt clothes but I’m definitely in their target market as I’m over 60. Even though I’m a standard clothes size, I like the fact that they cater for tall, petite and larger sizes. Not many clothing companies are quite so inclusive of all shapes and body types.

TattyOne · 08/06/2023 10:29

Wear exactly what you want when you want!
If you're 100 and want to wear the sort of clothes teenage girls wore in the 1960s then go for it!
You're only 51, 7 years younger than me!
Tell DH he's just jealous because you've still got the groove!

Seasalt pretty much defines dowdy.

MyPenIsHuge · 08/06/2023 10:29

I'm well below their target audience age but I buy some bits and bobs because I want cotton stuff that will last.

FangsForTheMemory · 08/06/2023 10:30

To me Seasalt sell the kind of clothes that real people wear for everyday. They’re comfortable, natural fabrics, well made and a good fit. They aren’t at the cutting edge of fashion but as the garments last at least five years, that’s a good thing! Your husband is a bit shallow.

Falafelfiend · 08/06/2023 10:31

Ok. Other than Bathsheva, can anyone link to a stylish dress under £100 in natural fibres? Genuinely asking. Suitable for a 52 yr old, size 10. I am not normally an S and B regular.

I sometimes see stuff on Cos I like but it's always polyester.

FangsForTheMemory · 08/06/2023 10:31

Mirabai · 08/06/2023 10:29

What rubbish.

chrystlha · 08/06/2023 10:32

No he suggested you're not!

Turfwars · 08/06/2023 10:32

Their stuff is excellent quality. I got a rain jacket on sale and it's the best jacket I've ever had. They had a lovely jersey top a while back that I'm still kicking myself I didn't get, because the cut of it was perfect.
I was early 40s when I discovered Seasalt. I also shop on Shien and Next.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 10:33

Ok, people talk about an old look- so I've been having a coffee and casually observing the women 18 to 35 going past- so far I've seen a lot of long dresses of the sort I would buy, shorts and hoodies (together) leggings and fleeces with vest tops, jeans and t shirts, cut off stripey trousers and t shirts. None of this seems particularly 'on trend'/fashionable and includes loads of students. I'm in Bath so it's a big mix , not all rich or poor. To be honest I think it's the whole picture not just 'an item' -
