My DH suggesting I'm "getting old" because I've ordered from Seasalt

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:27

I saw a lovely wee dress last night on Seasalt, I have some money saved for a clothes makeover and decided to go for it. My DH said last night it was nice but isn't Seasalt for older women 😆 I'm 51 in July and I don't think it looks like an OAP website. Now I'm thinking, shit should I send it back?
I just want a few quality pieces I can add to, I've not bought myself anything in a long long time due to illness. We are going shopping to a shopping centre on Sunday and I'm reluctant to browse with him hovering now x

Brandi Melville is literally a few shelves of white or grey crop tops and leggings folded up amongst a few bits of driftwood and sold by thin, angry looking young shop assistants….isn’t it? 😆

My teen DD loves it. I don’t get it at all.

Yes, there is lots of that, I'm not entirely sure as we went in the one near Covent Garden at Christmas time but I sent DH in as I couldn't cope with the crowds, my DD got this stripy sweater https://images.app.goo.gl/v3J8FEWquHerMms16 but it looks almost grungy on DD and dear I say it a bit cooler than on the model as she wears lots of jewellery and has lovely dark thick hair, it doesn't look like this model wears it which sort of proves the point that a PP was suggesting I suppose about clothes suiting different shapes better than others regardless of where they are from. My MiL looks good in seasalt and she is certainly not dowdy, more 1960s, Bohemian looking gives loads of her amazing 1960s 70s jewellery to DD and I!

Yes, my DH is in to his clothes and he knows of woman's brands, he dislikes Cos but then again he likes Muji and Uniqlo and I find the stuff looks too ultilatrian for me. That said I did get a linen shirt from there recently.

I've shopped at Seasalt since my early thirties too. They have nice clothes which are a good fit on me.

Goldenbear · 08/06/2023 12:39

Women's not womans

ModestMoon · 08/06/2023 12:39

I'm 30 years old and have things from there, if that's any consolation. But to be honest I think you should just wear what you like.

She looks amazing

She really is amazing.
Yoga and being quite disciplined with what she eats ..{Unlike me! }
Keeping active does seem to be very important.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/06/2023 12:40

But that picture looks like frumpy old lady/ex primary school teacher style to me. My 86 year old mum wouldn't be seen dead in that. She wouldn't wear Seasalt either.

She still wears leather trousers, silk blouses and good shoes or a well cut pair of jeans with a blazer and good trainers. Dresses will be well made classic frock.

She has always been far better dressed and more stylish than me.

I agree with this. I love all of the above, I'm 53 and not ready for my twinset and pearls just yet!

Aha but if you wanted to wear twin set and pearls, there’s nothing stopping you!
If you love it - wear it 😊

MenoRageisReal · 08/06/2023 12:42

So you saw a dress and liked it and now you're doubting yourself and wanting to send it back because a man made an ageist comment.

I think that's really sad.

I agree. Why are you giving so much weight to his opinion and not trusting your own?
Who the fuck is he anyway - the ghost of Gianni and Karl brought back to misogynist life? Grin is he always exquisitely dressed?

fuckmyuteruslining · 08/06/2023 12:42

I buy lots. Love it. Used to be Boden but it's shit and expensive now. My young adult kids like the jumpers etc too

Lemonyfuckit · 08/06/2023 12:42

I'm 41 and love Seasalt and have had stuff from there for years. I like a lot of the turquoise/teal colours they do and a lot of the Breton stripes / maritime look stuff as I'm always drawn to that kind of thing, and how soft and nice quality the cotton is.

No I wouldn't chose it for something sexy or dressy, more nice quality casual clothes.

I sometimes think there should be two sub-boards- one for Fashion and the other for people who just want reasonably priced, fitted, practical clothes in natural fabrics ( me). I can see those who know about Fashion are very frustrated with the rest of us, but the thing is there is no place for incredibly expensive frocks which get stuck in my bike wheels in my post-pandemic world.

I wondered if you were using ‘bike wheels’ euphemistically?!

I’ve never seen anyone, of any age, wear a pair of leather trousers that I’ve thought looks good on them.

Why dismiss someone’s choices as “frumpy”? May not be to your taste, but a “frock” sounds dreadfully old-fashioned to me.

oakleaffy · 08/06/2023 12:46

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:53

I liked it because of the colour and also the fabric against my skin at the moment. Anything restrictive I can't have, I need loose. Xx

That's definitely not frumpy.
Keep it.

{I had shingles over lockdown and absolutely couldn't have had anything remotely 'tight' as the slightest touch of clothing on the rash was too much to bear.}

Lol. No, a real bike. I am in Central London. Need to be able to walk, bike, Tube and take the bus in my clothes. I can't wear white, for one. Gets dirty in 10 minutes.

😱

amoretti · 08/06/2023 12:49

I'm late 50s and wouldn't be seen dead in Seasalt, Joules, FatFace or White Stuff

They are all the same - earth mummy middle class England style for stay at home mums who have no style

Practical and boring - not classy and elegant

Sorry but you asked and I've just asked my husband and he turned up his nose too!
His word....frumpy

😱

I’ve just looked at that link. It’s the sort of clothes I imagine Grayson Perry’s alter ego might wear.

MrsRachelDanvers · 08/06/2023 12:51

But you’re the target demographic for them-they must be doing something right. Someone who wants safe, comfortable clothes that look nice-a coastal Boden if you like. And what’s wrong with that?

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 12:52

oakleaffy · 08/06/2023 12:21

I had a look at their website..I can see what he means, some are rather 'safe' mumsy floral coverall frocks.

For some reason, {some} men detest floral frocks.

But the tops and trousers are OK.

@WoofWoofBeachLife Tell him they have a 20% off sale on MENSWEAR 🤣

🤣🤣🤣 I'll screenshot something he might like and if he says he likes it I'll send a link to the old Meldrew 🤣

Sissy style.

Exactly!

{Although I do like Grayson Perry...}

What do you consider classy and elegant? And who’s to say that’s not someone else’s definition of boring?

That's how all my conditions started, with shingles on my face in 2009. I have allodynia and often can't stand anything touching my skin. Xx

bit harsh 😂

It's not really my style, but you lost me with your "SAHM who have no style" 😂.

Where should classy and elegant career women shop for casual clothes then?

I know a woman that just wears her career high powered clothes for the week at the weekend. I'm talking stuff you'd wear in the City, it looks bizarre.
