My DH suggesting I'm "getting old" because I've ordered from Seasalt

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:27

I saw a lovely wee dress last night on Seasalt, I have some money saved for a clothes makeover and decided to go for it. My DH said last night it was nice but isn't Seasalt for older women 😆 I'm 51 in July and I don't think it looks like an OAP website. Now I'm thinking, shit should I send it back?
I just want a few quality pieces I can add to, I've not bought myself anything in a long long time due to illness. We are going shopping to a shopping centre on Sunday and I'm reluctant to browse with him hovering now x

I'm not a fan of some of the Seasalt prints but I don’t like labelling any store as “dowdy”, “frumpy” etc. It’s what looks good on individuals, and how you style things, isn’t it?

I hate people saying a particular label is dowdy. Any clothes in the wrong shape for your body, or the wrong colours make you look dowdy.

I agree with this. Those are sneery and condescending descriptions. I am not a fan of muted colours because they don't suit me, and I would look "dowdy/frumpy" in them, but I don't write off a whole brand off as dowdy.

Sneering at other people's clothes choices is an unpleasant character trait.

Worryingly, I am starting to like my 12 year DD's Brandy Melville stuff, definitely not their target market but my 16 year son's girlfriend have him a huge baggy bottle green hoodie that is like one I had in the 90s and tbh I may have borrowed it recently, it looks fine as it is so big.

LorraineInSpain · 08/06/2023 11:32

I’d definitely wear some of the Brandy Melville stuff if any of it was remotely close to fitting me 😂 some is definitely best left to the teens / tweens though.

fantasmasgoria1 · 08/06/2023 11:35

Seasalt doesn't seem to be for a particular age group but it's mainly just frumpy.

Oh yes, so far own the baggy hoodie I can wear, sadly not the tiny tops and wouldn't like it 😂

Goldenbear · 08/06/2023 11:36

Only not 'own'

Goldenbear · 08/06/2023 11:37

Oops again, that should say, DD wouldn't like it.

And another.
Yawn.

I wear Seasalt and I'm in my 30s, they are no different to Fat Face, Joules etc. Wear what you like.

These also terrible brands

Outdamnspot23 · 08/06/2023 11:41

Ahahah yes coastal too. Well maybe some things just look nicer by the sea and look shit inland? Seasalt is from Cornwall I think so wouldn't be surprised.

People do look just as silly when they try to wear chic fashionable outfits on a cliff walk (esp the shoes) or to have a beach barbecue at dusk (freezing).

YinYogi · 08/06/2023 11:42

A couple of my favourite white cotton tee shirts are from Seasalt. Good quality, nicely cut, wash well.

In fairness, my 77 yr old mother does love Seasalt. But she also has very good taste.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 08/06/2023 11:44

You find hidden gems in the oddest shops.

My dh was into his clothes too so I feel the pain of a dh who actually knows different brands and their target demographic.

UndercoverCop · 08/06/2023 11:44

I'm in my thirties and have some of their dresses for work, they're comfortable and I'm tall so it's good everything isn't short. I work in an environment where casual/smart casual is fine but cannot be in any way revealing so it suits. They wash well and are good quality, plus regular blue light discount. Can't complain

nibblethekibble · 08/06/2023 11:44

I walked past Seasalt the other day and said to my DH - "oh, that's lovely"

DH very kindly told me to behave myself. His mother shops there, and she's 81 (a very lovely, fit, active, glamorous 81)

I'm 32 Blush

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 11:45

@AntiStuff at 61 I feel the same- I rarely buy clothes as have lots but had a pre holiday too up this week bought from M&S ( t shirt dresses and a long white over shirt) next- black with white embroidery knee length peasanty button front type dress
Shein- black chiffon over shirt. Fat face- navy blue button front linen knee length dress and silk Fred's- (online) nice maxi dress

None of which to me are frumpy, and all suit me

SocksAndTheCity · 08/06/2023 11:45

I have some fantastic Brandy Melville tweed trousers that I found in a charity shop - I'd never heard of it. Is it a childrens brand? 🤣

I've never seen a Seasalt shop here in London and it isn't my cup of tea, but somewhere that sells lots of cotton sounds like a good idea and having had a look it's the sort of thing my sister would definitely wear. I'm 50 and she's 47.

Where do you shop, since you are so achingly on trend?

UndercoverCop · 08/06/2023 11:48

Ooh I also live by the coast, maybe that's why!

YinYogi · 08/06/2023 11:50

Brandi Melville is literally a few shelves of white or grey crop tops and leggings folded up amongst a few bits of driftwood and sold by thin, angry looking young shop assistants….isn’t it? 😆

My teen DD loves it. I don’t get it at all.

megletthesecond · 08/06/2023 11:51

Roses it is Laura Ashley isn't it. I always wanted LA as a teen in the 80's.
Seasalt looks very faffy and impractical now I'm older. I need jeans and trainers for walking everywhere.

Tbf to the previous poster fat face and joules are awfully middle aged and middle class. So I guess it depends on if you like that kind of look? Each to their own!

MyDogStoodOnABee · 08/06/2023 11:57

I’m with your husband, Seasalt, fat face, joules - it’s the shapeless tunic effect, you end up looking like sponge Bob square pants!

Falafelfiend · 08/06/2023 11:58

I sometimes think there should be two sub-boards- one for Fashion and the other for people who just want reasonably priced, fitted, practical clothes in natural fabrics ( me). I can see those who know about Fashion are very frustrated with the rest of us, but the thing is there is no place for incredibly expensive frocks which get stuck in my bike wheels in my post-pandemic world.

Nsky62 · 08/06/2023 11:58

Not keen on sea salt, 61 and def will not be buying their stuff

I don't shop in those shops either because they aren't to my taste (or pocket), and while I am the age demographic for Seasalt, I really resent the frumpy/dowdy ageist comments aimed at posters who do. I do have some Seasalt pieces, but most of their clothes are in colours I don't care for, but I don't tell people who suit muted colours that they look dowdy.

It says more about the poster making those comments than the Seasalt/Fatface/Joules/White Stuff shopper. There is just no need to be so unpleasant about other people's clothes choices.
