Sandals for a city break

reluctantbrit · 07/06/2023 09:24

Can anyone recommend really comfortable sandals for walking around a city and not rubbing the skin?

We are off to the US in August and the trip will include Boston and NY. I normally use trainers for a day sightseeing but don't want to wear them for 4-5 days in a row when it's really warm.

My Doc Marten 'Voss' have been the best sandal ever for me.
I wear them to work but since last summer they have been worn in Malaga, Montenegro, Barcelona and Krakow in hot weather on walking tours without issue. They go with most outfits and have been so comfortable. I didn't have to wear them in.

GettingStuffed · 07/06/2023 09:33

Birkenstock but make sure you wear them in first. Once they're broken in they're the most comfortable shoes ever.

reluctantbrit · 07/06/2023 10:39

@GettingStuffed - I have Birkenstock as slip ones and yes, they are comfortable but I don't like them really look-wise as sandals.

@notacooldad - I heard about them but I really hate the look of them.

Does anyone knows Vionic?

Just got back from New York and you need to remember how grubby it is there.

It was 31° one day and I wore trainers and my feet were not too hot

Theos · 07/06/2023 10:40

Otherwise, try Clarks, surprisingly, some nice sports sandals

bibbityboppityboo · 07/06/2023 10:41

Teava are super comfortable I find but not the cutest looking! Depends on the style or colour I find.

I have Birkenstock Milano sandals and they're comfy and never rub.

Weirdly New Balance trainers (the mesh ones) style 530 are really breezy and not at all hot on the feet I find (wore in NY in 30 degrees!).

Mars27 · 07/06/2023 10:46

I'm incredibly fussy with sandals, it's hard for me to like anything and I also have plantar fasciitis. I only wear Fitflops but decided to give Ecco a try, I've bought these and I'm waiting for a delivery, I'll report back once I "road tested" them.

It's tricky isn't it. For my up coming city break I'm taking trainers, fit flops and some Clark's sandals. I love my Birkies but definitely not for walking mikes around a city. I know I'll mainly be wearing my trainers but I like to be prepared.

Mars27 · 07/06/2023 10:50

I researched all brands suggested here: Teva, Moshulu, Gabor, etc, etc and didn't like the look of any. Birkenstocks are the ugliest shoe ever and I hate that kind of cork sole, horrible for my plantar fasciitis. Dr Martens with the "tyre" sole (very fashionable I'm told) are just an aberration, ew!

Yes, I'm fussy, I know.

WombatBombat · 07/06/2023 10:52

I bought some Next leather fisherman ones for about £30. Didn’t expect much, but they are so comfortable. Cushioned sole, provide good support (I have dodgy feet and ankles) and caused no blisters at all.

reluctantbrit · 07/06/2023 11:10

@Mars27

DD wore Ecco as school shoes for years, she has trouble with lots of main high street brands and she never had any issues with Ecco. So fingers crossed for you.

Putting Ecco on the list to investigate.

I agree with the DM look, just hate them.

@bibbityboppityboo will have a look at Teava and mesh trainers. I just want a break from my normal trainers who are ok but I don't like trainers in general that much so I hope for something else as well.

Ugg golden star sandals are a dream for walking.

Yes, I had Ecco shoes when I used to work as a waitress over 20 years ago and they were a dream to walk on, so fingers crossed indeed

I have bunions on both sides of both feet and despaired at finding new comfortable sandals for this summer. Then I found these Rieker ones. The secret is (whisper it) velcro, so the width is adjustable both across the toes and ankles, plus the ankle strap. I practically embraced the salesperson when I tried them on! I took them on holiday to Italy recently and could wear them all day with no discomfort. Highly recommended. https://www.rieker.co.uk/rieker-ladies-footwear-c2/rieker-ladies-sandals-c83/rieker-v36b9-women-sandals-p12968#attribute%5B1%5D=119

Saltwater sandals with the new sole? Boardwalks?

Cheers for that Mars27😂They were my suggestion and I love them!
To be fair DH hates them but never mind!
They are the most comfy sandal ever for me!

Different strokes for different folks and all that; if you like them, wear them! I just think I'd be a little mutton dressed as lamb if I wore them as they're a bit on "young" side of things for me. I've always favoured a more clean, classic look. But if they suit your style, go ahead and tell your DH to keep his opinions for himself 😅

whycantmenfindstuff · 07/06/2023 12:33

DM voss. I have the vegan so can't vouch for the leather ones

whycantmenfindstuff · 07/06/2023 12:36

Mutton dressed as lamb is an abomination of a saying and should never ever be uttered

As for DMs, I think it's mostly 40 somethings
(Like me) who wear them

Frenchfancy · 07/06/2023 12:39

Ecco. https://gb.ecco.com/en-GB/product/5638406740/ECCO-FLASH

The most comfortable sandles you will ever own. Mine are at least 6 years old and whilst they are now looking a bit battered I still can't find anything better so I'm just going to buy another pair.

Nah, I'll say whatever I want to, cheers 😎

Shufflebumnessie · 07/06/2023 12:45

These are the most comfortable sandals that I've found over the past few years. I walk for miles wearing them in the August heat of Orlando last year. So comfortable and no rubbing. I was so impressed I bought them in several colours in the sale ready for this year (but not sure if they have anything other than black this year):

Vionic you need try try on. They're supposed to be great for problem feet/ knees but I found them uncomfortable .

Skechers sandals are good.

I have those! I wish they had them in red.
They are very comfortable.

Thanks so much everyone. Lots of brands to look at.

DD is desperate for a pair of DM boots, she would be mortified if I would buy the sandals, the only reason I would consider it.

Honestely, I am 50 and really don't like the style, the Ecco ones are a lot more what I wear.
