Sandals for a city break

Can anyone recommend really comfortable sandals for walking around a city and not rubbing the skin?

We are off to the US in August and the trip will include Boston and NY. I normally use trainers for a day sightseeing but don't want to wear them for 4-5 days in a row when it's really warm.

My incredibly grumpy feet love the Saltwater Boardwalks. The footbed is flat with no ridges so no blisters, the sole is thicker than the original saltwaters and more supportive, and the leather is soft and even more so if you get them wet and then wear until dry. I absolutely love mine!

AngelicCurls · 07/06/2023 14:11

another vote for Saltwaters here. Wore them on a city break recently all weekend and no blisters, super comfy and smart

Mars27 · 07/06/2023 15:02

Those Saltwaters are quite nice! Do they run true in size? Large or smaller?

Flockameanie · 07/06/2023 15:58

I have just today taken delivery of a pair of Saltwater boardwalks and I love them! They seem very comfy and are TTS for me. Obviously haven’t worn them further than around the house yet though…

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 07/06/2023 16:23

Fitflop Gracie’s and similar have worked for me.

I'm incredibly fussy with sandals, it's hard for me to like anything and I also have plantar fasciitis. I only wear Fitflops but decided to give Ecco a try, I've bought these and I'm waiting for a delivery, I'll report back once I "road tested" them.

I like those, please do let us know how you get on with them.

Mars27 · 08/06/2023 00:27

Will do @BirdChirp

I've recently bought Hotter Tourist sandals after seeing them mentioned on here. They are very comfortable and look nice imo. There will be people on here who will say that their maiden aunt aged 77 wears them and that they are 'Old lady' shoes, but they can fuck right off, as far as I'm concerned. I'm really pleased with them.

Boredwitholdname · 08/06/2023 03:28

Has anyone here with bunions tried Saltwater??

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 08/06/2023 06:03

Fly London sandals are really comfy, also Mansfield, had a pair of gold sandals from there last year, was like walking on clouds.

reluctantbrit · 08/06/2023 08:07

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I have Hotter shoes and they are really comfortable when walking on pavement. The sandals I have are not so great but it's a different style than the Tourist.

I remember trying on a pair in the shop and a lady next to me said to her friend "just because I am nearly 80 doesn't mean I need old ladies shoes. Don't they have anything nicer looking?" I nearly fell off the chair.

This is the style and beauty thread though! Style and comfort together obviously the holy grail of fashion, as identified by your 80 yr old woman OP.

In my book hotter and sketchers and fitflop kind of fall into comfort first, and birkies, DMs and saltwater the other way round. Nothing wrong with choosing any of them but you can't tell me hotter is the height of fashion!

Yawn.

The Tourist ones imo are no more or less stylish than Birkies, but they fit my feet better. They are both just fairly plain and relatively inoffensive, but feel free to make ridiculously ageist comments if it makes you feel better to think that one relatively boring pair of very similar black sandals is better than another.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/06/2023 18:31

And nobody is saying Hotter is the height of fashion. Who cares?

Isabelle70 · 08/06/2023 18:41

I have Vionic slippers which are great form my flat no arch fit. Not very fashionable but I wore Sketchers arch fit sandals for 2 weeks in Disney a few weeks back. Oh my the most comfy shoe ever!

Those ones good enough for you? I suppose they're a bit flat for your liking but you can always find something a little higher if you look hard enough

No but I have the ones with the buckle at the toe and it opens out really wide if needed so might be okay?

I would say true to size. I'm a 6 and they fit perfectly

Mars27 · 15/06/2023 14:28

@BirdChirp and @reluctantbrit my babies have arrived.

So I do my usual trick of covering the sole with sellotape and test them at home first. So far, so good, but let's see in a few days 👍🏼

@AlrightJulia thanks for your reply on the Saltwaters 😊

They look nice!

kentishgodess30 · 15/06/2023 14:57

I own a pair of Clark's sandals which don't resemble orthopedic ones, and I've managed to wear them comfortably for twelve hours at a stretch

gogohmm · 15/06/2023 15:09

I have timberland sandals. Really comfortable but you need to break them in

Mummyford · 15/06/2023 16:02

As a native New Yorker, I echo the poster above about it being kinda grubby for sandals. Nice sandals for out to dinner or popping out for some errands, yes. But for pounding the streets all day, on and off the subway, walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, etc., I think you might find it a bit icky.

LittleRobin01 · 15/06/2023 16:12

Toms Sidney sandals. Comfortable from day one and look modern.

hellswelshy · 15/06/2023 16:20

I've just bought the M& S ones in tan for £45 that I think were recommended here. They are very comfy so far & pretty stylish. Last year I bought Clarks Karsea and have ditched them after a year, make my feet look awful and flat somehow and we're so hot and sweaty!
