Idk, is it? I'm never sure as I know there are outlet stores which always puts me off a little? Educate me please!

Just wondering how many people will look at someone’s bag and actively think that that person is uncool. Choose a bag you like, and not because some random person on mn deems it cool or not.

I like Radley. Radley cross body pocket bags are great. Well made and long lasting.

The fact they are deemed not to be "cool" by Mumsnet Style and Beauty, is, if anything, a recommendation.

I agree on all counts. I love Radley.

Chuffaluffa · 18/05/2023 05:59

OP as much as I don’t care much about how cool a bag is, I do care about lgbtqia+ rights and I’m sorry that mumsnet must be such a horrible place for people from that community at the moment, I toy with leaving and I’m only an ally. Especially on IDAHOBIT, ugh it’s just so unnecessary.

I think there are probably many more allies than you see, it’s just impossible to argue with the very vocal and aggressive minority. I have had posts that were supportive of trans people deleted in fact. We’re here, even if you don’t hear us all the time. In solidarity.

Robinni · 18/05/2023 07:10

Oh for GOD’s SAKE.

This is a thread about HANDBAGS.

I am sick of Dylan Mulvaney issues popping up causing controversy. I don’t want to see the horrendously abusive posts against - awful - nor the supporters of Dylan being a tampon brand ambassador..

Arguably Dylan is an attention seeking person whose career in acting was flagging, and now lo and behold making millions off the back of trans rights and fetishising the transition process. I don’t know how progressive or helpful that is to everyday trans people.

PLEASE can we not just have a space to discuss handbags.

I’ll ask again - what is cool now if a lot of well known brands big 10yrs ago are out?

I agree with all of this (except that I do like a handbag 😂) and have reported this thread as this forum should absolutely be a fun, inclusive space. There's a whole forum in which the GC crowd can work themselves into a frenzy. I hope you come back, OP.

Now, onto the bags - I agree with the PP that it's worth having a look at Polene as it's an interesting brand with a fresher look. That said, while Kate Spade bags aren't terribly exciting, there's nothing inherently wrong with them.

PomRuns · 18/05/2023 07:24

People are entitled to boycott brands if they wish.

The term terf is offensive - but the OP already knows this.

Spectre8 · 18/05/2023 07:25

Handbags are just handbags, I didnt even know about Kate spade and Dylan.i have had kate spade bags before all of this.

Who cares who is promoting a bag, are people seriously thinking people who have kate spade are therefore supporting something..

Its a just a bag I liked!!!!!! It doesn't meant anything more than that

RandyMiceDavies · 18/05/2023 07:39

I really like the Polene numero dix bag. Also have a look at Honey & Toast- these are great quality for the price and very useful styles. No idea about cool though- to me a cool bag is one of those you put freezer blocks in 😂

Agree @SleazyLizzard

Anyone interested in bags - longchamp also worth a look.

ImAvingOops · 18/05/2023 07:50

Agree that if a poster wants to talk about a specific brand, then they can't complain when all aspects of that brand is discussed, including marketing and brand ambassadors.

Coach are good if you buy in the sales - I've had a couple that have lasted years and cost around £100 each. All I will say is that the gold plating on the metalware is rubbing off and looking a bit patchy.

Kate Spade is 'meh' to me. The quirky designs aside, it looks like Coach but I don't think the sales are as good.

I bought the Numero Dix bag in camel and I love it. Really versatile and a good size. I use it almost every day.

My tip would be to avoid the soft leather ones in this style though as I think they would age faster. The joints between the strap and the bag aren't metal, but leather. Gorgeous design feature but I think if the leather was softer it would show wear after a time.

SleazyLizzard · 18/05/2023 09:23

Not sure why my post was deleted. I merely pointed out that OP calling pp terfs, wasn’t really in the spirit of Style and Beauty. And if Kate Spade uses Dylan Mulvaney to promote its bags, surely that is what they want to be discussed. Isn’t that rather the point of brand ambassadors.

PomRuns · 18/05/2023 09:36

Isn’t it clear we can only discuss if we agree 🙄

tbh I wouldn’t be surprised if Kate Spade is struggling - think that obvious branding has had its day.

Hence the recent marketing attempts.

pumpkintits · 18/05/2023 09:37

Not going to comment on Dylan Mulvaney lest I be branded an evil bigot, but are there adults who are really still bothered about what brands are "cool"?

Reminds me of in high school when I was desperate for a Kookai bag despite the fact they were bloody hideous because all the "cool" girls had one 🙄

If you like it, it suits your needs and budget, then buy it and sod what anyone else thinks

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 18/05/2023 09:42

All those type bags seem preppy but definitely not cool. Ted Baker, Michael Kors where I live and work was more about you being able to afford the label rather than any style points in my opinion!

The quality of some of the items might be great eg Radley but it’ll be a cold long night in hell before you’ll see me with either of these!

Lobelia123 · 18/05/2023 09:46

Youve labelled yourself as the uncool one by caring in the first place. First rule of style, know what you like and if it suits you, wear it without regard to passing fads and disposable fashion.

You’re in style & beauty. It can’t be a shock to you that people posting on style & beauty want to discuss what is deemed stylish/cool.

LadyPoison · 18/05/2023 09:47

I rarely use my old KS. It’s insecure a pickpocket would be in it easily. Probably a bad choice of design on my part. Great colour though!

I’ve just send my favourite handbag in for repair as the strap broke. It’s decades old but I use it constantly and love it. No idea who the maker is. It’s pure leather and is aging magnificently.

I totally agree with you both. It's boring and a bit sickening.

It was incredibly sad what happened to her, I used to like the designs but can’t help but think of what happened even though she no longer owned the brand.

Same. I always think of her death when I see the brand mentioned. So incredibly sad, for her and her daughter.

mumofboys8787 · 18/05/2023 10:02

About as cool as Michael kors.

Aka

Very uncool

SilentParrot · 18/05/2023 10:03

What the fuck is happening to this website? Can we not even talk about handbags now without a swarm of anti-trans people sucking all the fun out of it?

It would seem not.

You’re in style & beauty. It can’t be a shock to you that people posting on style & beauty want to discuss what is deemed stylish/cool.

It's still a shock that adult women can be so insecure that they can look at a bag or a pair of trainers and can't decide if they like them or not unless the brand is deemed to be "cool"

For things like bags my only criteria is does it look nice to me? Is it a useful size?

I love clothes. I spend a lot of money on clothes - "is a bag a cool brand" has never entered my head.
