An alternative to leggings!

I hope someone with a broader idea of clothes can help me, I absolutely love leggings, they are comfy and practical for me but I don’t feel comfortable going out in public in such skin tight clothing (even thick ones) I’d love to hear of trouser alternatives. I’m a 12-14 with a big bum but relatively small waist, my top half is a size 8. I’ve got sensory issues (autistic) and wearing anything tight or restricted (denim) makes me irritable and I can only stand them for a few hours at a time which means multiple outfit changes in a day!
I tried a pair of paperbag waisted light denim jeans but they didn’t look great, the cut wasn’t good.
any ideas and links appreciated, thank you!

How about chinos? No idea if they are stylish or not but I don’t like jeans (or leggings apart from at the gym) so wear chinos instead.

KimWexlersPonyTail · 09/05/2023 08:33

M and S do straight leg stretchy trousers with elastic waist, dont know how to link but they are item 07659614. I am now wearing these as look awful in leggings now.

NeedCoffeeNowPlease · 09/05/2023 08:37

What about jeggings? Look like jeans, fit like leggings?

Coffeekisses · 09/05/2023 09:38

Oooh this thread is for me! I am the same about anything touching my waist, hate, hate, hate being uncomfortable.
my absolute top top tip is the Hush harem pant. It’s pricey for what is basically a Jersey jogger (£50ish) BUT… price per wear is tiny, and I wear mine with basically everything, t-shirts in the day, silky blouse for an evening out, naice jumpers etc etc. the major breakthrough for me was deciding that they don’t just go with trainers, but also with heels and even big clompy boots 😄

Next also do a very similar jersey harem pant for more like £30, which is also very nice, but comfort-wise you have to try the Hush ones to know what I mean!

For summer I also recommend a pair of black culottes in a very light fabric, with a simple elasticated waist. Think just a few cm above the ankle. I had a pair from topshop which I wore till they fell apart, but I’m sure most shops will do something similar. The only problem is you can’t really wear them with a baggy top 😄😄 as you end up looking completely swamped (happened to me a few times, didn’t realise till I saw photos of myself!). They’re great with a more fitted or cropped t shirt, or a nice cami top etc for very hot weather.

Hope you find something you like, OP!

@IHeartMac like the look of those joggers.

SelkieSeal · 09/05/2023 11:39

I'm also ND with sensory issues around clothing.

How about dungarees? I've got some really comfy stretch corduroy ones that are a dream to wear (they're Run&Fly ones in charcoal grey).

I also wear leggings a lot instead of tights. I realise this is a cardinal sin on S&B but so is most of my wardrobe so I don't really care Grin I love patterned leggings with a black jumper dress (I make a lot of my own clothes so when I say patterned I mean patterned!!)

Heckythump1 · 09/05/2023 12:41

Next do jersey 'joggers' too, they are really stretchy and soft and comfy and don't look like joggers at all. Come in all sorts of patterns/solids too :)

KirstenBlest · 09/05/2023 12:44

Jeggings or thick leggings from somewhere like M&S

KirstenBlest · 09/05/2023 12:45

Loose dungarees (like Lucy & Yak originals) are very easy to wear.

Mumofthree8 · 09/05/2023 13:11

Oh wow thank you all so much!
going to get a million tabs open later on my iPad and have a look at all options! Love the idea of harem pants…

I bought these recently and they’re very comfortable, I have issues around waistbands but these have been fine so far. I’m pear shaped too.

I was coming on to suggest these - I have them in the light denim and they are really soft and comfy without being restrictive on the waist.

Niftythrifter · 09/05/2023 13:17

Palazzo pants?

The Next ones I have are like decent weight jersey leggings but not as tight - very comfortable, and come in petite length - I live in them wfh.

Spanielsarepainless · 09/05/2023 13:34

Lands End Starfish tapered leg trousers. The fabric is a heavy jersey. I think I have four pairs.

NanFlanders · 09/05/2023 13:43

Popsy dress over coloured leggings if informal, tights if formal.

Lcb123 · 09/05/2023 13:44

What about patterned trousers, Fat Face and Seasalt have nice ones. Or dungarees lots of places sell nice ones, I have Lucy & Yak ones they're so comfy.

JaneJeffer · 09/05/2023 13:52

Vero Moda have these in lots of different colours and a variety of lengths.

This. Hush’s Amie joggers are brilliant. So comfortable yet much dressier than leggings.
