Why the hate for off-shoulder tops?

bringincrazyback · 05/05/2023 21:48

I'm genuinely curious after some of the comments I read about them on here. I wear them a lot and feel good in them, but they seem to be widely considered awful... what do people dislike about them?

I love off the shoulder tops! I find that highlighting the width of my shoulders helps to balance out my hips a bit.

NCTDN · 05/05/2023 22:29

I can't stand wearing an uncomfortable strapless bra and if you wear a normal one, it's on show and defeats the point of off the shoulder.

This - plus even if you go for the strapless bra option, the tops never seem to stay where you put them!

Highdaysandholidays1 · 05/05/2023 23:09

One option is to wear a crop top or something with a nice underneath bit, like the Urban Outfitters bra tops, and then they are meant to show, say with a slouchy off-the-shoulder top or something crocheted.

GettingStuffed · 06/05/2023 09:28

Can't wear a bra with them, and at an hh cup you need straps

Bluebellsinbloom41 · 06/05/2023 09:31

Personally, I don't wear them because I'm carrot-shaped so accentuate my proportionally-wide shoulders.

But I think they look fine otherwise!

Laiste · 06/05/2023 09:33

It depends on the style i think.

I'm no fashionista , but off one shoulder - it just looks like your clothes are hanging off because the neck is too wide/low and you can't be arsed to pull it up. There was a woman on masterchef recently with one shoulder out all the time and i just kept wanting to reach into the screen and sort it out for her! 😂

Both shoulders, bardot style, looks nicer.

DelurkingAJ · 06/05/2023 09:34

Can’t wear a bra under them and can’t throw a jumper over them. I like the effect but it’s for posh frocks for me when I will bear the grief of a strapless bra!

CindersAgain · 06/05/2023 09:39

You can wear a bra with some of them, eg like this.

I think they’re a bit ‘common’ looking. Can’t think of a different way of wording it.

I wouldn't normally say this because I'm all for people wearing whatever they want at whatever age they want etc, but I do think these cold shoulder tops really suit very, very, very few people. Sorry!

Dreamwatchwait · 06/05/2023 09:53

The issue for me is not being able to wear a proper bra - I am far too old and grumpy to put up with the discomfort of a strapless bra

Theimpossiblegirl · 06/05/2023 09:54

Off the shoulder and cold shoulder are two different styles.

Both can look nice. Wear what you feel good in.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 06/05/2023 09:55

I can't stand cold-shoulder tops. For me, wearing one feels like you're trying to find and display one of the few parts of the body that are not wrinkled or saggy. It makes me feel like a stotting antelope: "Look at me with my youthful upper arm, don't eat me, Lion, can't you see I've still got it!"

I will not wear anything that is designed to disguise or shield age. I love getting older, bloody love it.

Catlord · 06/05/2023 09:55

I'm not a fan of cold shoulder tops but those that are properly off the shoulder look great. I think strapless bras are the problem for those with bigger knockers.

I'd roughly describe myself as a broad shouldered hourglass (not the most busty) and find them really flattering. They do emphasise my shoulders somewhat but make my waist look smaller and I find it quite a strong 40s/ 80s kind of look

Silvergoldandglitter · 06/05/2023 09:58

Do you mean off shoulder or cold shoulder? Cold shoulder isn't liked on here but I've never seen anyone mention off shoulder tops.

Only just coming back to this thread as I'd forgotten posting it (was very sleepy at the time 😁)

Tbh I'm never sure which is which 😂but here are a couple of mine. I tend to wear this kind as they somewhat disguise the bra straps. 😄Agree it's harder to wear the kind that's completely off the shoulder because of the strapless bra issue.

Nothing in particular against the style, but they often seem to be made in very cheap material.

Pigtailsandall · 06/05/2023 15:52

The photos are of cold shoulder tops. I personally can't stand them - they feel awkward and fussy to wear, and they always seem to be in psychedelic patterns. Also if it's cold enough for long sleeves, I definitely want my shoulders covered.

StarlightLady · 06/05/2023 16:14

I love my off shoulder tops. One of several MN sins I commit on a regular basis.

RaceToTheMiddle · 06/05/2023 16:17

Off shoulder as in Bardot?

i have a couple of thick cotton tightly fitted Bardot tops. Casual style. One plain colour and 1 navy/white stripes. Don’t need bras with them.

RaceToTheMiddle · 06/05/2023 16:19

And like this. I wear them a lot in the warmer weather!
in the cold I like my neck wrapped up

StephanieSuperpowers · 06/05/2023 16:22

I hate cold shoulder tops, sorry OP. I always associate them with older women who don't want to be fully sleeveless but don't want to cover their tattoos.

5128gap · 06/05/2023 16:45

I love the look of bardot tops as I have nice shoulders. Unfortunately I rarely find one that stays in place. If I lift my arms above waist level they ride up back onto my shoulders which is really annoying.

bringincrazyback · 06/05/2023 18:57

I like them as I'm not comfortable wearing anything that shows my upper arms, they're awful due to past weight issues. Nice to be able to show off my shoulders instead. 😄

Having said that, I'd never wear a one-shoulder top as I think hardly anyone can really carry them off.

I like them. My shoulders are very narrow so they make me look more in proportion. I can also get away with not wearing a bra.
