Why the hate for off-shoulder tops?

I'm genuinely curious after some of the comments I read about them on here. I wear them a lot and feel good in them, but they seem to be widely considered awful... what do people dislike about them?

I really don't like them. I've nice shoulders but I just couldn't wear a cold shoulder or off the shoulder top. I just don't think they look good.

Jolenetookmyman · 06/05/2023 21:13

I love oversized jumpers and tops that fall off the shoulder. I have to wear a bra and always wear a low cut vest to hide it.

Livinginanotherworld · 06/05/2023 21:15

They mostly just look tacky to me, I don’t think many people can carry them off.

OllyBJolly · 06/05/2023 21:23

Cold shoulder - no. Never seen one that isn’t ugly
Off shoulder - can look fabulous.

I can't stand cold-shoulder tops. For me, wearing one feels like you're trying to find and display one of the few parts of the body that are not wrinkled or saggy. It makes me feel like a stotting antelope: "Look at me with my youthful upper arm, don't eat me, Lion, can't you see I've still got it!"

I will not wear anything that is designed to disguise or shield age. I love getting older, bloody love it.

Thank you. I completely agree. It's like women are told that past a certain age we look so hideous we must cover up and then women suddenly think 'but the small patch of skin on my shoulders is passable' so they cut out small holes so they can hide the rest of themselves from public ridicule. I hate them. And they look a bit shit too

Off the shoulder can look really good. Cold shoulder never looks anything but awful.

ProstituteHair · 06/05/2023 23:12

There's 'cold- shoulder', 'Off-the-shoulder',

'Bardot'.

And others...

TheChosenTwo · 07/05/2023 00:11

I always think off the shoulder looks really sloppy and slobby. Like you’ve half made an effort to get dressed.
And I really dislike the cold shoulder ones even more, I don’t get what they’re trying to do really, it’s either warm enough that you don’t want sleeves or cold enough that you do. These are a strange invention that just look quite fussy imo.
I’m a very boring dresser though so really just stick with the same things I like but in different colours 😂

Honestly? No it looks daft. What's the point of wearing a long sleeved woollen jumper and leaving one shoulder bare?

It just looks as if she hasn't put it on properly.

NCTDN · 07/05/2023 08:57

I like cold shoulder tops... runs off to hide

LadyWithLapdog · 07/05/2023 09:04

I’ve seen long sleeved tops and Bardot style tops in the same colour on top of it. A modesty covering sort of thing but looks too warm and sweaty.

drpet49 · 07/05/2023 09:05

Dated and chavvy

MultipleVeganPies · 07/05/2023 09:09

I like them

spottybug · 07/05/2023 09:09

Bra issues

Those aren't tops. It's off the shoulder tops that are being discussed. Not off the shoulder fitted formal gowns which are worn to different occasions and are made of differently fabrics.

You wouldn't wear a formal wedding style dress made of t-shirt material because it wouldn't hang properly.

TheOGCCL · 07/05/2023 09:55

I think they look a bit sloppy and messy, on top of which there are often bra issues and they just aren’t warm enough. I like a sharp neckline, think it looks more put together.

LlynTegid · 07/05/2023 09:56

Nature is often very unkind to women, and so are the judgments of others. So very few people can wear such tops and look elegant in them.

They aren't "tops". They look absolutely nothing like that lopsided jumper you posted.

Bearpawk · 07/05/2023 10:54

I like it for formal evening wear (if you have the shoulders to carry it off)
But tbh I've never seen any nice day-to-day off the shoulder or cold shoulder tops. It's quite new look/ primark which isn't mr style tbh.

gogogoji · 07/05/2023 11:44

@NatashaDancing @YellowDots ok you are right. They aren't tops. They are dressed but chop them off. Stick a skirt under and it's a top.
The post didn't say 'off the shoulder sloppy jumpers'. It said off the shoulder tops and that doesn't preclude evening tops.
Personally I think they can be Uber elegant. They show the curve of the neck and like showing ones back, they are an elegant and sophisticated way of showing a glimpse of skin and a hint of sexiness without the bold obviousness of cleavage, thighs or body con. They are all fine too but sometimes we want a bit more refinement and shoulders or back di that well.
In any case, it's unusual to like off the shoulder evening dresses but then say you think off the shoulder tops are weird or lopsided or messy etc. it's not the off the shoulders that is the problem here as you don't mind that at all in certain garments. It's the style of off the shoulder.

Tbh I think the picture on the left and the bottom right look ridiculous too. It's the weird combination of wearing what looks like basically sensible, everyday trousers and long sleeved jumpers but leaving your shoulders bare. Why?

The one on the left also has that odd haven't put this on properly look.

I can't see enough of top right to comment.

NatashaDancing · 07/05/2023 12:35

Top right looks as if it's being worn as part of formal/ evening wear. It's nice. The other 2 just look daft.

JellyfishandShells · 07/05/2023 12:40

If you have can choose one that doesn’t involve constant fiddling about and hitching up or pulling back down, then they can look ok, depending on event.
