Why the hate for off-shoulder tops?

I'm genuinely curious after some of the comments I read about them on here. I wear them a lot and feel good in them, but they seem to be widely considered awful... what do people dislike about them?

Because it looks like whoever made the mad an accident, sure I don't care wears them but I don't get them myself, same as one sleeve/shoulder different to other

Same as jeans that are ripped or hang down halfway from the waist

Or strapless tops where people spend all the time pulling them up

Like anything if works for anyone go for it but I don't get it

I think my issue with cold-shoulder tops is that they always look like they are made of scratchy polyester and sold in places like shein and boohoo, and whenever I see people in them, they always wear the tops way too tight. The jumper look is a bit nicer, but I agree that I'd just get v cold, and how do you wear a coat on top?

Occasion wear is a different issue because it is exactly that - occasional wear. I had a wedding dress similar to this neckline and I loved it but no way I'd wear something so complicated and fiddly in every day life

@NatashaDancing @YellowDots ok you are right. They aren't tops. They are dressed but chop them off. Stick a skirt under and it's a top.
The post didn't say 'off the shoulder sloppy jumpers'. It said off the shoulder tops and that doesn't preclude evening tops.
Personally I think they can be Uber elegant. They show the curve of the neck and like showing ones back, they are an elegant and sophisticated way of showing a glimpse of skin and a hint of sexiness without the bold obviousness of cleavage, thighs or body con. They are all fine too but sometimes we want a bit more refinement and shoulders or back di that well.
In any case, it's unusual to like off the shoulder evening dresses but then say you think off the shoulder tops are weird or lopsided or messy etc. it's not the off the shoulders that is the problem here as you don't mind that at all in certain garments. It's the style of off the shoulder.

I thought it was clear that it didn't mean evening dresses though in the OP. Those off the shoulder and cold shoulder tops are in no way comparable to ball gowns.

It's fine that you like them and think they look elegant, of course it is. My point was that posting a load of evening gowns in support of the debate was not supporting it at all because they are a completely different item of clothing.

My 18 year old wears my old Whistles Cashmere Cowl Necked Jumpers off one shoulder & it looks stunning.
I used to love the Flashdance look.
Anyone remember the slouchy off the shoulder sweatshirt that became so popular?

@NatashaDancing Tbh I think the picture on the left and the bottom right look ridiculous too. It's the weird combination of wearing what looks like basically sensible, everyday trousers and long sleeved jumpers but leaving your shoulders bare. Why? The one on the left also has that odd haven't put this on properly look. I can't see enough of top right to comment.

Mine show in a line, not a quadrant. I dint know why yours are showing up too right bottom left etc. mine are in a line. I'm on a phone rn. Maybe it comes up differently on a computer. In any. See, you dint like it. Fair enough
