Help me tame DD's wild hair! Photo Attached

Photo attached of DD hair, she is 2.5 years old.
No matter what I do, it always ends up looking like this!
Last night she had it washed with Child's Farm shampoo and conditioner for curly hair and then a bit of My Little Coco curling custard out through it and blown dry.
What do I do? 🤣
I've tried lots of products but anything I've put in her hair when it's dry just makes it greasy and sticky and then it needs a wash again - we try to only wash it once or twice a week.
Please help!
(Oh and she only had it cut 3 weeks ago, so it doesn't need a trim yet!)

I think it maybe has a slight wave rather than a curl. Have you tried just drying it straight?

My youngest has ringlets and just needs water to reset them, eg drizzly weather or a spray of water. What does her hair do in the rain?

Heckythump1 · 23/04/2023 09:54

I do blow dry it straight and this is what we get the next morning! 😛 In the rain it just goes flatter but still tangly.

Her big sister had similar, but much, much less wild hair, but it went straight after a couple of cuts. This one's just goes curlier and poofier each time it's cut! 🤣

Will she wear it up?
If it was longer you could try plaits at night.

How is it without any product?

CrystalMaisie · 23/04/2023 10:01

A few layers and let it dry naturally with leave in conditioner perhaps.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/04/2023 10:02

My dd had similar hair. Plaiting it at night stopped it tangling. Or a silk pillowcase.

hungryh1ppo · 23/04/2023 10:02

I would wash and condition then put the curl cream through and plait when damp. You can then release it when it's dry or leave it plaited to keep it tangle free!

I do Dutch braids on my dd and they stay in well over night.

Silk pillowcase for her to stop it tangling over night.

Heckythump1 · 23/04/2023 10:05

It's not long enough to plait yet unfortunately and bobbles don't stay in brilliantly!
It definitely looks better when left to dry, but we tend to wash before bed and I don't like her to go to bed with wet hair.
She just always looks such a scruffy mess, doesn't help that we're growing out her fringe and it's at the most annoying stage of just covering the eyes and not long enough to tie back yet!

I use conditioner with DD's hair and run my fingers through it in bath so I can detangle it. Brush it when it's drier and then again in morning. I also bought her a silk pillow to try stop it being too crazy in the morning. She refuses to wear it tied up or back.

Your options are plait/put up, brush more often or cut.

There is a Facebook group for a small company called 'Soap for little suds'. If you message the lady who founded the company she will give you great advice on products. They seem expensive at first glance, but my almost 4 year old with additional needs has curls and a sensory issue with hair brushing. At times I've had to cut matts right out of her hair. She has a product called hair pudding which I find fab, but she has lots of different products for different hair types and will happily suggest one to you.

Tippexy · 23/04/2023 10:10

I’m guessing she has just woken up from that photo. It’ll look much better once it’s been brushed.

Was hoping someone could suggest a wonder product I've not tried yet! 🤣
I've tried all your suggestions already (except plaiting) and it never looks any better for longer than about half an hour 😩

Why you using curl products and then blowdrying it? Thats why it becomes like that

either use the products and let it dry naturally and then just wet it the next day with a spritzer and brush through (i really recommend denman brush if you want to enhance the curls/waves or leave out the curl custard etc and then give it a rough dry.

For a good brush for detangling when wet/dry i swear by this, it doesnt look much but my daughters bum length curly hair is so easy to brush with this.

The alternative of course is just not to worry about it too much. She's two, it's not like she's got to go off to a board meeting.

Quartzrain · 23/04/2023 10:15

Maybe just use a wide toothed comb and some detangling spray or spray-in leave-in conditioner?

Dutch braids at night as a pp said. It is easily long enough for these. You probably don't need the curl product at all, but could use a little leave-in conditioner if necessary.

I'm using curl products and then blowdrying because I don't know what I'm doing, hence why I'm asking for help!
I'd seen the curling custard recommended before, but I don't like her going to bed with wet hair, hence the blow dry.
I've tried a lot of different things but nothing seems to work, it either gets wilder or goes all greasy and sticky 😩

Hello, my hair is thick and curly. Have you tried leave in conditioner? This is my favourite - apply to wet hair.

conditioner

Look up the Curly Girl Method - basically, use silicone and sulphate free shampoo, and wash infrequently (I wash mine with shampoo about once a fortnight, but condition in the shower more often; curly hair benefits hugely from its own natural oils), use a wide tooth comb rather than a brush and font use loads of products.

Plating at night works well, but I've never tried a silk pillowcase.

Bemyclementine · 23/04/2023 10:24

The child's farm detangler is good. Ds had hair like this, I didn't use shampoo, just conditioner, then squeeze with a towel. Spray the detangler on and comb through. Leave to dry naturally (by the time he was dry, in pjs, bedtime stories read it would be almost dry anyway).

Heckythump1 · 23/04/2023 10:24

This is it brushed, so it doesn't like much better at all.

Can you not wash it in the bath at night, but in the shower in the morning? That might help.

Thanks, we have this and I've only used it on her hair dry, which just makes it go all sticky. Didn't think to try on wet hair, will give it a go!

I have hair like your daughters. Over many years I have found the best thing is to comb with a wide tooth comb after washing and conditioning. Then lightly towel dry and use some leave in conditioner shake out and lightly scrunch looks great for wavy look.

McConkeysPlate · 23/04/2023 10:27

Does she swim regularly?
