Help me tame DD's wild hair! Photo Attached

Photo attached of DD hair, she is 2.5 years old.
No matter what I do, it always ends up looking like this!
Last night she had it washed with Child's Farm shampoo and conditioner for curly hair and then a bit of My Little Coco curling custard out through it and blown dry.
What do I do? 🤣
I've tried lots of products but anything I've put in her hair when it's dry just makes it greasy and sticky and then it needs a wash again - we try to only wash it once or twice a week.
Please help!
(Oh and she only had it cut 3 weeks ago, so it doesn't need a trim yet!)

Does she swim regularly?

Nope, she hates swimming 😛

It’s beautiful hair.

The next time it’s cut take her to a decent hairdresser. It will make all the difference. I’d towel dry it, use a silk pillowcase and decent shampoo and conditioner and decent Kent brush.

QueenCamilla · 23/04/2023 10:30

Just wash her hair earlier on and let it dry naturally. A good brush before bed, a good brush in the morning. Done.

All those products and blow drying on a toddler... She doesn't need it.

I had wavy/curly hair as a child and it was just fine with shampoo, conditioner and air. Sometimes a blow-dry after evening swimming.

That clean, shiny, a tad wavy childhood hair is such a beautiful thing - don't mess with it!

Silk/satin pillowcases are great as others have mentioned.

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 23/04/2023 10:31

My dds hair was even worse than that so I sympathise. I recommend a head jog brush Head Jog 08 Paddle Brush Flexible Soft Pin Bristles, Detangling Wet Or Dry Hair. Gentle Brushing Hairbrush. Detangling Brush Curly & Wavy. (Original Collection Heather) https://amzn.eu/d/b3VxAIq and cantu products. I always tried to work on a small section at a time, which is hard when the entire body of hair is a collective tangle but start at the very ends and try to gently work bits out and separate as you go. Then French or Dutch plaits for bed so you’re getting as much hair plaited as possible. Dd has short hair now, so much easier!

We got to a brilliant hairdresser, it's a children's specific salon.

Going to try wide toothed comb and a silk pillowcase :)

The first pic loks lik there' too much product, that will also lead to hair clumping together. I think a shampoo and conditioner withthe wide tooth comb, and then left to air dry. It looks really think so it might not dry over night (mine does and this is a fine option fo rme), so it may mean that that you have to wash it earlier in the day. I then woudln't put any product on it. Perhaps then see what it's like, but if it's like your last pic, that hair doesn't need product.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/04/2023 10:34

Also, don't blow dry. Pat with a towel and squeeze, don't rub. I have never suffered from going to bed with damp hair.

CordyLines · 23/04/2023 10:35

Your daughter's hair is lovely as it is. She is very young for all the products mentioned, although I know the advice is meant well.

Either just plain old spray on de tangle stuff (which I use myself - the kids one!), and brush through before drying, or try put it in a pony tail or as others said braids.

In the meantime, relax as I think your little girl might get the "hair vibes" from you. I doubt she cares much at all.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/04/2023 10:36

Another one who says wash earlier in day and allow to dry naturally.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 23/04/2023 10:38

My hair is similar, it doesn't like conditioner. I was with shampoo then use a leave in cream. Try to dry it naturally. Comb when wet then minimal brushing I between washes.

Heckythump1 · 23/04/2023 10:21

I'm using curl products and then blowdrying because I don't know what I'm doing, hence why I'm asking for help!
I'd seen the curling custard recommended before, but I don't like her going to bed with wet hair, hence the blow dry.
I've tried a lot of different things but nothing seems to work, it either gets wilder or goes all greasy and sticky 😩

Sorry my reply came across quite harsh reading back.

blowdying it straight is a definite no no after using curl products as it makes it all very sticky and greasy.

you can use those products but then dry with a diffuser so it doesn’t get that sticky matted feeling.

it doesnt look like she has very curly hair so if you do just use shampoo/conditioner and then blow dry it, you can then use a detangling spray the next day to brush through and look fresh, i think this option would probably work best for you and her.

Heckythump1 · 23/04/2023 10:24

This is it brushed, so it doesn't like much better at all.

It looks fine to me, she’s a kid so doesn’t need to look perfect. I assume your first photo is of it unbrushed.
My kids have ringlets and yes they need moisture etc. So I think your DD is more on the straight side hence curl products just making it lank.

5128gap · 23/04/2023 10:42

It looks way better brushed. The first picture looks like half the problem is it clumping together with product.
Wash, apply leave in conditioner, comb and leave alone. No blow drying, and brush as necessary. Children's hair is often fuzzy and fluffy and looks really cute. No need for piling on products and styling at 2.

titchy · 23/04/2023 10:42

She needs it layering. Sorry but it might be a posh children's salon (in which case why haven't you asked them) but it doesn't seem to be very well cut to me.

apric0t · 23/04/2023 10:44

Don't blow dry it, my mum used to blow dry my hair every wash and it was always a tangled mess. Wash, condition and then let her go to bed with her hair damp. Will dry overnight and have waves. Then in the morning if it's a bit messy spray it down with water, comb it and let it air dry again. This is what I do with my daughters hair and it's fine

Londontown12 · 23/04/2023 10:46

I would lay off any products it can cause scalp irritation! And if it’s making hair greasy it’s not suitable I would get a silk pillowcase and u can buy special hats at nights to stop hair friction and just let it grow a bit longer maybe wash in morning instead of evening x

MBM18 · 23/04/2023 10:47

I find product always needs washing out. When I put curling product in my DDs hair, the next morning it's so knotty.
Try using no product and see how it is the next morning. Then when it comes to brushing spray a bit of water and a de tangler spray and it should be much easier to brush through

Quartzrain · 23/04/2023 10:48

Heckythump1 · 23/04/2023 10:24

Ah, it looks alright to me. It's got a beautiful wave to it, maybe just needs a little spray-in conditioner and smoothing down with your fingers if you think it still looks messy. Be careful not to make too much of a fuss about it. My Mum did that about my hair when I was younger, she still does sometimes, and I ended up getting quite depressed about my appearance. As she gets older it will change anyway and I bet she isn't concerned about it.

People with curly hair don't brush it once dry! Sorry this is too funny like a flashback to my childhood, my mum with straight hair making my curly hair look like a birds nest 😂 we don't brush dry hair and leave it, you have to brush it to detangle then wet it to allow the waves to form. She also looks quite little atm and the hair isn't quite long enough to form the proper curls yet. Some curly hair products are much to heavy for Caucasian hair and are meant for more Afro hair types which will make her hair a sticky mess. I really like the AsIAm Coconut Cowash it's a shampoo conditioner in one, cleans effectively and helps curls develop and is light and also their leave in conditioner I have in a spray bottle mixed with water for spritzing

TokenGinger · 23/04/2023 10:52

I second the recommendation for SFLS. We use Soaps For Little Suds and it's absolutely incredible. We have three different hair types in this household but the products work for us all.

There's specifically a conditioner group which I've found invaluable and you can see all of the different types of hair types and products they use to give a good idea of what might work here.

Child's Farm is protein heavy, and coconut is a protein mimicker so it'll be drying out her hair and making it like straw. I’d avoid anything with coconut.

Thanks will have a look!

I had to try hard not to spend a fortune as she had so many lovely things. I can vouch for the hair pudding though, it's definitely made my daughters hair less frizzy and easier to brush through after washing etc. And as I say, it's usually impossible with her sensory issues and easily tangling curly hair 🙈 I've also used other products of hers in the past and they were great, but she happily gave me advice on what's best for her hair type before I bought anything. I'd buy again based on her customer service alone 😂

TokenGinger · 23/04/2023 10:55

I think for her hair type, all you need is a decent co-wash, and maybe a light leave in conditioner or curl cream. You don’t want anything too heavy on her light curls.

I’ve just ordered the cleansing pudding this weekend! I can’t wait to try it. There’s soooo much positive feedback about how great it is for the detangling process. I love her products so much!
