Help me tame DD's wild hair! Photo Attached

Photo attached of DD hair, she is 2.5 years old.
No matter what I do, it always ends up looking like this!
Last night she had it washed with Child's Farm shampoo and conditioner for curly hair and then a bit of My Little Coco curling custard out through it and blown dry.
What do I do? 🤣
I've tried lots of products but anything I've put in her hair when it's dry just makes it greasy and sticky and then it needs a wash again - we try to only wash it once or twice a week.
Please help!
(Oh and she only had it cut 3 weeks ago, so it doesn't need a trim yet!)

Please don’t use silicone ( anything with dimethicone, or any “cone” at the end of the word) on your child’s hair.

I am sorry, I didn’t intend to be rude about your hairdresser. My suggestion still stands though, a decent cut makes all the difference, particularly when a child has a hair crown that isn’t “standard”. It’s difficult to tell but my guess is that your child’s crown isn’t.

she has beautiful hair and I’d probably not worry about it but you did ask-a decent hair cut, no SLS and no silicones would be the basics.

What budget friendly shampoos are silicone free please?

Zola1 · 23/04/2023 13:51

I would avoid the curling products, her hair doesn't look like it has a particular curl. You're undoing it by blowing her hair straight afterwards as well.
When my 2yo hair is especially wild, I spray it with water, brush it back into a super high pony, put a bit of gel on my hands and smooth it out, and then use an elastic band bobble. It makes her burst couch head look passable.
Otherwise, just wash her hair a bit earlier, twist it round your fingers to encourage it to curl, and let it dry. In the morning just give it a spray with water and twist again.
Alternatively just blow dry it straight and leave out the curl cream

What budget friendly shampoos are silicone free please?

Most shampoos are silicone free, it's conditioner that often has them in
Couple I can think of are

Umberto giannini
Noughty hair care
Imbue
Giovanni do good conditioners
Aldi volume conditioner (blue bottle) is silicone free

Katescat · 23/04/2023 14:00

Thanks @Kyse, can you recommend sulphate free shampoos too?

This is it brushed, so it doesn't like much better at all.

She has beautiful hair!!! When that is longer it'll have lovely curls. I'd just not put product on it yet.

I have really wavy hair that looks messy unless I wash and leave to dry, no brushing - but mine is long.

CornedBeef451 · 23/04/2023 14:17

On my DD I used to use a leave in argan oil conditioner from Avon and just use a wide toothed comb and leave to air dry.

If she has a wave or curls then too much product and blow drying will make it worse.

DD now has beautiful ringlets but it took a few years for us to figure out how to deal with it. (Also still has hilarious morning hair as a teen, some mornings it is huge and wild!)

ilovetea14 · 23/04/2023 14:53

My DD has curly hair, her hair was like that as I kept brushing it when dry as didn't know she had curly hair. I wash her hair, put tangle spray and curl creme in and brush from bottom to top and only brush when wet. I use a micro cloth to dry it has her hair holds the water after I wash it, I then put a silk cap on to help it dry and she leaves it on when she goes to bed but takes it off after awhile I never use a hair dryer. I spray her hair and brush it most days if I leave it to long it gets very knotted and messy looking. When I get her hair cut I get layers in it as her hair sits better.

Deathraystare · 23/04/2023 15:13

She has my hair! I have to use a tangle teaser brush. I am still trying to smooth it out. It is a bit better now I cut it (well the hairdresser did!) but blimey!

Mischance · 23/04/2023 15:20

Use a wide toothed afro comb when wet, then plait it.

Heckythump1 · 23/04/2023 18:21

Thanks all... so many different suggestions, I'm bit overwhelmed!
Will just go back to basics with shampoo, conditioner and no hairdryer and see how we get on!
Will attempt some fancy pigtails, but she's standard 2 year old and doesn't stay still for long!

Her hair isn't wild at all, just normal children's hair. Just brush it, if it's properly curly just brush is when wet. Both my children have very curly hair and they get their hair brushed when wet with conditioner and then I get the worst tangles out in the mornings with some leave in conditioner. I can't worry about them looking too 'perfect' though. Life is far too short.

Looks like my hair.
LESS PRODUCT
ORS olive oil shampoo is a miracle product https://www.boots.com/ors-olive-oil-aloe-shampoo-370m-10085997 , leave in conditioner and a wide toothed comb (really wide toothed) Blow dry to three quarters dry, only finger comb when dry.
Too much product just makes my hair stick together and causes tears.

Use a tangle teezer to brush and before brushing spritz with a leave in conditioner.

User2538309 · 23/04/2023 20:08

Another option is to all but scrap the shampoo. My curly DC only gets shampoo when they are absolutely covered in paint or food or something else that does need a bit of lather to remove. Occasional conditioner but mostly just washing with water. It really doesn’t get greasy like adult hair.

User2538309 · 23/04/2023 20:08

Better for skin too.

summerfinn · 23/04/2023 20:12

As someone with dead straight hair I found myself ruining my Ds hair . I never knew now to brush curly hair when dry or not to over wash it. I wash my sons hair at night once a week but only use child's farm coconut conditioner unless his hair is really dirty I wash with shampoo. I lightly towel dry it and he goes to bed with damp hair. In the morning he wakes up and it's afrizzy mess so I use some water in a spray bottle to make sure the hair is damp before brushing. I sometimes use curlying custard not often. I then take his hair in my hand and scrunch it. This helps the curls form. The only thing I may be doing wrong is the brush I use. It's the tangle teaser. ( my ds has long hair btw)

Crimsonripple · 23/04/2023 20:14

Aww she's got beautiful hair. It has such a nice wave. I'm no hair expert but it may look better longer or a slightly better cut with layers. I'd leave out all the products. I've always used Johnson's standard baby shampoo on my son. If I've run out of mine I use his and it makes my hair so soft.

Truthseeker34 · 23/04/2023 20:17

liveforsummer · 23/04/2023 13:19

Ooh I wouldn't let that within a half a mile of curly dd 😅 - that's for straight hair 😬

Lol well it works on my daughters very curly and frizzy hair !! Honestly it has been amazing.

Reigateforever · 23/04/2023 20:24

When mine was young I’d gently comb it every night, dry or wet and no pulling, before going to bed bed and then sort of make a French plaît, so it didn’t get matted at night and easy to comb out in the mornings. Did this till she was ten, her hair was then down to her waist and no split ends

Aslanplustwo · 23/04/2023 20:39

Itsanotherhreatday · 23/04/2023 11:40

No don’t cut it shorter it’ll
look worse - User2538309 do you have curly hair?

I have short hair, and while I call it wavy others call it curly. My hair looks awful longer, it's a myth that curly hair has to be long. I would have to spend literally hours on making my longer hair look good, short is extremely easy, and my hair is in the best condition it has ever been.

samqueens · 23/04/2023 20:49

Bloody hell! She’s 2! Poor little mite - her hair should honestly be the least of your worries and yours.

Have it cut a bit shorter (no longer than shoulder length), so it’s more manageable and dries quicker. a good cut is the best way to manage this type of hair, if she will tolerate sitting still for it!

Wash and then condition / leave in conditioner/ detangling spray when wet. Let dry naturally. If she has thick, wavy hair the hairdryer is not her friend.

Use wide toothed comb/brush if you must brush it. But a spritz of water and running your fingers through should sort it of a morning. Honestly - the shorter it is the easier your lives will be. You might have to manage your expectations - she doesn’t have fine, straight hair and the best way to deal with wavy, thick hair is embrace it not try and make it look super tidy. It just won’t do that.

Choconut · 23/04/2023 20:49

It looks like there's a lot of product left on her hair, are you washing it in the bath? If so I'd say that's the problem and it needs rinsing properly with a shower. I'd also use a lot less product, no more than a 10p size and consider completely cutting out the conditioner - I didn't even know young kids used conditioner, I never did and I never used it on mine.

Clarabe1 · 23/04/2023 20:54

Your daughter has naturally curly hair and the problem is you are trying to blow dry it straight. It doesn’t work for long as you are finding out! Rain, humidity etc makes the hair become frizzy. You need to let it dry naturally with just a leave in hair conditioner.
