Help me tame DD's wild hair! Photo Attached

Photo attached of DD hair, she is 2.5 years old.
No matter what I do, it always ends up looking like this!
Last night she had it washed with Child's Farm shampoo and conditioner for curly hair and then a bit of My Little Coco curling custard out through it and blown dry.
What do I do? 🤣
I've tried lots of products but anything I've put in her hair when it's dry just makes it greasy and sticky and then it needs a wash again - we try to only wash it once or twice a week.
Please help!
(Oh and she only had it cut 3 weeks ago, so it doesn't need a trim yet!)

Also bare in mind weight is your friend, when it's linger the weight pulls is down and it looks less frizzy. Don't make the mistake my mum did of getting it cut too short. I completely disagree with the PP suggesting layers. It needs thinning out with thinning scissors at the very ends or sandwich layering so the top is smooth but layers are not, I repeat not what you need!

Aslanplustwo · 23/04/2023 10:59

Why do you wash it at night, maybe try washing it in the morning and letting it dry naturally.

Lavenderflower · 23/04/2023 11:02

I think you may be using the wrong techniques. If you want it to have more defined waves/curls then use a denmen brush and spray a little bit of water or leave in conditioner but not too much. I would avoid blow drying her hair - its a waste of time. I think you should watch curly/wavy hair routines on YouTube and instagram.

EarringsandLipstick · 23/04/2023 11:06

I'm at a loss - when it's brushed, it looks lovely & fine to me.

No way would I be putting lots of product in a small child's hair or blow drying much - I think your DD looks lovely & I would just brush & not worry!

Highlyflavouredgravy · 23/04/2023 11:07

My son had really curly hair. I washed it with kids shampoo, combed it and left it. Then the next day a quick spritz of detangler snd a quick comb.
Just stop doing so much. Leave off the all the products.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 23/04/2023 11:08

Plus i think it is jusy wavy rather than curly

Aslanplustwo · 23/04/2023 11:14

I also don't understand why you are using products all the time, and agree that her hair is wavy, not curly.

Whiskeypowers · 23/04/2023 11:15

You can get silk sleeping bonnets for toddlers - google them.

I agree
My youngest had really curly hair up until about 4 it’s still wavy and the Ross product I used the better his hair was

also you tend to use cooler water and jugs of it to rinse children’s hair normally in the bath: this doesn’t always get all the conditioner or shampoo out effectively as a hot shower then a blast with cold pressurised water so I think that residue can sometimes remain anyway if you’re not especially thorough

Cakeandslippers · 23/04/2023 11:20

My daughter's hair was exactly like this, nothing helped it was just like it! I found putting it in pigtails kept it out of the way (when she let me!). She's 4 now and her hair is absolutely beautiful, very thick, shiny, volumous with a lovely natrual wave - almost looks like she's just had a professional blow dry and she gets a lot of compliments. Bizarrely now it looks messy up as lots of hair escapes so we will never win but I'm sure this is an age thing and I'm sure it'll improve.

TokenGinger · 23/04/2023 11:21

You’ll always get differing advice when it comes to curly or wavy hair. Some will recommend no layers, whereas my hair looks like a triangle without layers. I definitely need it. Some will say don’t dry, whereas my hair and my son’s hair type needs the heat - mine for setting my mousse, my son’s for help absorbing the leave in condition due to the porosity of his hair.

There are many different routines you could try. Start simple, with a leave in conditioner or cream, spritz in a morning with water and a small bit of conditioner on the tips of your fingers to refresh, and see how you get on.

Sometherusername · 23/04/2023 11:23

We use child's farm detangling spray, but decant it into another spray bottle and water it down (maybe 1/6 spray to 5/6 water approx).

If you're feeling flush then curlsmith weightless air dry cream (rub a small amount through soaking wet hair then leave to dry naturally) is also good, but it is £££

liveforsummer · 23/04/2023 11:23

Dd has curly hair and I never put anything on dry. It gets a spritz with water each morning then some conditioner run through it. I don't use shampoo either - wash it with conditioner twice a week then leave some in - it's such a simple but effective routine. Only ever detangle when wet - don't try to brush dry. You probably don't need the curl creams they just cause build up

Kyse · 23/04/2023 11:23

Here. It's not straight so you need to treat it differently. You can dry it but use a diffuser, and don't brush it when it's dry, it'll just go poofy

Here's my hair
First pic is if I brush it and treat it as straight
Second pic is when I care for it like it is, which is wavy

Oh and don't use wild/scruffy/poofy/mess in her hearing
Tell her how lovely it is and embrace the curl/wave
I've heard so much negativity about curls and waves and how they have to be "tamed" and they're unprofessional/messy

Sometherusername · 23/04/2023 11:26

(I will say though - I think the first picture is a pretty standard look for a toddler after a day at nursery. I wouldn't stress too much!)

Truthseeker34 · 23/04/2023 11:32

I had the Same problem with my daughter in fact, I couldn't brush her hair with a normal brush and often it looked like she had dreadlocks. My mum got us a detangiler and it changed everything ill send you a pic

StephanieSuperpowers · 23/04/2023 11:34

My little girl's hair is just like that. I put some spray in it, a leave in conditioner type thing called revlon princess spray. It has grown longer now so it's a bit easier.

Itsanotherhreatday · 23/04/2023 11:37

Stop using sulphate in shampoos
brush her hair only before it’s washed
shampoo her scalp only and condition the ends only - with curl activator it you have it

curly cream when damp.

Buy a wrap for her hair to sleep in

Do not blow dry curly hair, wet hair won’t hurt over the summer - in winter wash it it the mornings.

It also needs to be a curly cut at the hair dressers and her hair would look better longer.

The alternative of course is just not to worry about it too much. She's two, it's not like she's got to go off to a board meeting.

This. 2 year olds should look a bit like they’ve scrambled through a hedge most of the time imo.

My3cents1 · 23/04/2023 11:38

I think she has beautiful hair. Come on now, most little ones look like they have been dragged through multiple edges at some point during the day. As long as she is happy and healthy I honestly wouldn’t worry🙂

User2538309 · 23/04/2023 11:38

Maybe keeping it a bit shorter would help with managing it? She’s got the whole of the rest of her life to experiment.

Exactly. Lovely hair, looks like she’s out having fun and doing what 2 year olds should be doing!

Itsanotherhreatday · 23/04/2023 11:40

No don’t cut it shorter it’ll
look worse - User2538309 do you have curly hair?

liveforsummer · 23/04/2023 11:42

Yes its definitely not easier shorter especially if its not getting a curly cut
