Which Pearl Necklace?

Mama1978 · 22/04/2023 22:24

Hi,

First ever Mumsnet post on a subject I have definitely overthought. I would like to purchase an inexpensive short faux pearl necklace, to wear with a shirt or a t shirt. Not after a preppy look, just something current and fresh to lighten up the face on Teams calls and not look drained by an occasional black top. So, the questions are - do I look for a white or cream / ivory and two or three rows? Examples:

this one also seems odd - bigger pearls are usually on the longest row, does this look “wrong” or actually positively different?

Thank you.

The John Lewis one is perfect! In fact, I’m going to buy it myself. Thank you!

knobheadex · 22/04/2023 22:29

Personally I wouldn't. I'd go for a nice layer necklace, and silver or gold would be dependent on your skin tone. Pearls seem ageing to me. Or just for brides. Maybe I'm weird but I'd never be seen dead in those offerings.

Mama1978 · 22/04/2023 22:32

Lol, this is what I want to avoid, the granny chic :-)

In the 1980s I used to wear them all the time, to dress up a sort of 50s look. They can be cool.

Mama1978 · 22/04/2023 22:33

Thank you, I am leaning towards that one too! I better hurry :-)

For the look you say you are going for I would only go for a single strand.

ExtremelyDetermined · 22/04/2023 22:39

I’d go for a single row, the twos and threes never seem to sit quite right and can look a bit untidy. I also think they look better on bare skin, so would keep it short and wear it inside an open collar, or with lower necklines, I don’t think the John Lewis one looks very good against the black top in the picture.

I know what you mean but I would go for something far more modern with pearls, like either of these. ASOS will have them in the £10-£15 range.

I just love the simplicity of a single pearl string. In fact pearls are my favourite necklaces. I own cream, pink and peacock single strings. They can be dressed up or down and always look great.

Lifeomars · 24/04/2023 16:32

I'm lucky enough to own a real pearl necklace, single row of salt water pearls with a diamond clasp which was a 21st gift from my mum many years ago. It is utterly classic and I wear it alone and also layer it with gold or silver necklaces. I don't think it looks "old lady" (even tho I am one now!) it's about how you style. Wear mine with jeans and a plain jumper and also with dresses

Double entendre klaxon!😬

RobinaHood · 24/04/2023 16:52

Pink pearls are nice too. I was bought some as a gift and ended up wearing them with lots of different tops and shirts.

Iamacatslave · 24/04/2023 16:56

@Mostar whatever do you mean…..

JimnJoyce · 24/04/2023 17:20

the ASOS Aldo Mallory is lovely

KillerSandy · 24/04/2023 17:46

Is it so you can clutch them when on MN? 😂

ChickenMaths · 24/04/2023 18:28

I've got a classic single strand but I've been dithering over the many options of this necklace for something more current: www.freepeople.com/uk/shop/for-all-time-choker?color=914&size=0000

BevMarsh · 24/04/2023 18:32

Love the JL one

starfishmummy · 24/04/2023 19:08

Personally I think a single row - even if fake - looks much nicer.

But then that was what we wore last time (or even the time before) this was a fashion! Maybe I'll dig mine out again

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/04/2023 20:08

I have a single row of faux pearls I bought for my wedding, short (just below my collarbone) cream, all same size .

I'm inspired to dig them out now Grin

Hehee (giggles like a teenager)

Not heard "pearl necklace" expression in Years.

CeliaCanth · 24/04/2023 20:54

Go for a single row. Of all my necklaces I wear my single row pearls the most - they go with most things and will definitely elevate your look on a teams call or similar.

Double or triple rows always seem slightly “dowager duchess” to me and best suited to very formal occasions.

LuluBlakey1 · 24/04/2023 21:13

I think pearls are timeless. I have several strands of real pearls - a single strand of creamy pinky pearls I was given by my parents for my 21st, an opera length of pale creamy ones that were my grandma's, two strands of smaller pearls that were my mum's and a bigger pearl short strand DH bought me, a single strand bracelet and a twisted bracelet of several strands. I wear one of the necklaces most days with anything really- jeans, t-shirts, shirts, jumpers, pinafores, dresses. They dress up or down.

I don't have any double strands- I think they are 'old lady' pearls.

I have had many pearl necklaces over the years. My DH often gives me them.
