Which Pearl Necklace?

Mama1978 · 22/04/2023 22:24

Hi,

First ever Mumsnet post on a subject I have definitely overthought. I would like to purchase an inexpensive short faux pearl necklace, to wear with a shirt or a t shirt. Not after a preppy look, just something current and fresh to lighten up the face on Teams calls and not look drained by an occasional black top. So, the questions are - do I look for a white or cream / ivory and two or three rows? Examples:

this one also seems odd - bigger pearls are usually on the longest row, does this look “wrong” or actually positively different?

Thank you.

They just look so fake, especially the double-strings. I wouldn't.

Nsky62 · 24/04/2023 23:10

Love pearls a simple string is nice, I have my grandmother’s double strand wear them for special occasions, mix up with gold earrings, my fav 9ct drop bee earrings ( 60th present)

justasking111 · 24/04/2023 23:12

I've a single row of cultured pearls. I love pearls though. Have lots of fake pearls, different colours and lengths, earrings, bracelets even a ring.

With a shirt I would wear a single row.

Have fun with them

I prefer not to buy new looking pearls but instead bought a pre used set from eBay. They look loved and worn and have a small marconite clasp in a diamond shape. They have a better colour than new looking pearls. Pearls improve in colour the more they are worn. I have bought 3 sets. 2 for myself one single strand and one double and one strand for my niece for her christening gift. They were a bit more expensive than new looking pearls but look better quality.

Hehee (giggles like a teenager)

Not heard "pearl necklace" expression in Years.

Me too giggling away.

Though very proper grown up replies!

strawberryfluff · 26/04/2023 13:10

I'd go single row and something were the pearls are spaced out - with other stones or gold perhaps. I think the string look is what makes them look dated.

BadGranny · 26/04/2023 13:14

I wear a single row of real pearls all the time, only take them off to shower. I bought them at auction, around £200. Pearls are very flattering to most complexions.

@KillerSandy
That is my job, and has been for some time! 🤣
(maybe time for a name change…)

Am I the only person who came here thinking this might be kinky thread?

Beautiful3 · 26/04/2023 13:27

I'd go for neither. Get a thin graduated one, on a single string, that sits on the collar bone. They look great with any outfit.

I have had many pearl necklaces over the years. My DH often gives me them.

I haven’t heard the expression for probably 30 years but I def had a little snicker to myself as I regressed!

OldFan · 26/04/2023 14:26

@Mama1978 I have really long ones that I can double round and my mum (rightly) said that the amount of them makes it obvious they're fake. Smile

So if you want them to look real, I suggest just one string around the neck.

Uokhon · 26/04/2023 16:14

Treat yourself to a single row of real pearls. They aren’t overly expensive! If you go for freshwater ones they are all different shapes and sizes so look interesting and modern, and again, not so expensive.

sofamarathon · 26/04/2023 16:22

Oh i love pearls. So on trend at the mo

Id go John Lewis

Jellycats4life · 26/04/2023 16:29

My grandparents bought me a set of pearls for my wedding day. I never wear them much because I always feel like they’re too formal or dressy for everyday wear. I’ve never tried layering with other necklaces but I want to try it out now!

WonderingWanda · 26/04/2023 17:04

I like the first one. It's never occurred to me that a pearl necklace is something I want / need but I think I do now!

cherish123 · 26/04/2023 17:49

Try Claudia Bradby - John L stock them
