Which top?

Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

You could walk into one of those shops and find a million tops to match black jeans if you have the cash to splurge a bit.

but clearly I have no taste so that would be dangerous 😂😂
I can buy something, but not go crazy price wise. I don't mind paying a bit more if I'm likely to wear it in 15 years time

Do you like any of the Mint Velvet tops that people have linked to? I don't think you've commented on those.

greyhairnomore · 22/04/2023 17:31

I have been browsing at M&S and found this: https://www.marksandspencer.com/cotton-rich-jersey-slim-textured-blazer/p/clp60590045?intid=mobileappppdpshare

Ruthietuthie · 22/04/2023 17:32

@MysteryBelle's suggestion (the heart blouse) would be really nice and would work with black jeans (not black beans, as I mistyped above!). You seem to want to look inconspicuous and not out of place. Why not aim to look FABULOUS instead? Don't hide your light.

mewkins · 22/04/2023 17:32

JaneFondue · 22/04/2023 15:45

Why are all the going out blouses these days puff sleeved, ruffled, gathered or pussy tied at the neck?

Principal Boy clothes.

I agree. Op, go for a linen shirt in a colour that suits you.

KillerSandy · 22/04/2023 17:32

Oh dear those tops are awful @OldGrannyish

Ruthietuthie · 22/04/2023 17:33

And what do you think about the two mint velvet blouses? A silk blouse in a neutral but elegant color looks really luxurious.

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 17:35

What is a neutral, elegant colour?

OP posts:
GeriKellmansUpdo · 22/04/2023 17:37

A neutral, elegant colour is grey, oyster, cream, ecru, taupe, all those posh colours:) I feel your pain because they don't suit me either. But they do look better with black jeans.

How about ditching the jeans and going with a jumpsuit? Thought has several in non-synthetic fabrics. https://www.wearethought.com/search?q=jumpsuit

@Thekormachameleon wont jumpsuits have the same issues as dresses if you're a completely different size top and bottom.

You’re hard work, op 😂

You're not freakishly different sizes top and bottom, I think you'll just show off your natural curves. Try a few on, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised

MiniEggsAllYear · 22/04/2023 17:41

I'm 33 and when I go out for drinks or a nice dinner, my friends and I tend to do jeans, a very plain top, and a blazer, usually in a bright colour, I have a hot pink one I love from H&M. Heels, smart trainers or dr martens on the feet. You're not loads older than me and I don't think the outfit I've mentioned would look wrong on someone in their 40's or 50's

CindersAgain · 22/04/2023 17:42

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 16:52

This is nice!
But maybe not warm enough.

I think some of the problem is that you are looking in places for older people, ie Wallis.

You’d be better in
Massimo Dutti
Mango
Mint Velvet
etc

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 17:42

@Purpl & @excelledyourself sorry, those are definitely not for me!

OP posts:
GeriKellmansUpdo · 22/04/2023 17:43

Actually the shops are horrible these days for anyone who doesn't like flouncy polyester clothes. I actually think the OP would feel more comfy in the blouses she has suggested than some of the ones here. I hate frills myself and I would never wear them, no matter how fashionable. No bows either.

Massimo Dutti has some nice classic clothes.

HappyTrance · 22/04/2023 17:45

Why don’t you choose a shop like Mint Velvet and pick a whole outfit you like, down to the shoes?

KillerSandy · 22/04/2023 17:45

Do you now? 😂 How about even older than that? 😂

ColdAsAWitchsTit · 22/04/2023 15:36

Was coming onto say mint velvet too.

www.mintvelvet.co.uk/products/beige-silk-v-neck-top-1

Something like this. Pair of heels and a blazer. Avoid bright colours with black jeans if you don't want to look really dated.

This is the best suggestion on here if you don't like poufy clothes. Beige does not suit me, but I might still buy it!

darjeelingrose · 22/04/2023 17:47

Sorry, it's viscose.

GrisleyR · 22/04/2023 17:48

To be honest I think ops number two choice is better than a lot of the frilly numbers and jumpsuits people have suggested.

Wear what you're comfortable with, then you'll enjoy the day. Go outside your comfort zone and you'll spend the whole time feeling self conscious.

Number 2 is lovely 😁

MysteryBelle · 22/04/2023 17:49

Cordeliathecat · 22/04/2023 17:48

If you really want to wear jeans then I’d go all out on the top. Sequins hide a multitude of sins and bring an outfit up to date. Paid with a little leather jackets and you’ll be good to go.

I like this!

FurAndFeathers · 22/04/2023 17:49

The green top you linked is nice @OldGrannyish The others are fairly awful.

I’d go with the green one, jeans and a blazer.

m&s, next, Tesco and Sainsbury’s are all good for decent but cheap clothes
