So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Like many 35-55yo women I've been wearing a floral midi dress with trainers every Spring/Summer for the past few years. I always buy dresses with pockets and love the comfort, practicality and coolness (temperature-wise) on a sunny day. Easy to layer under a denim jacket, biker or blazer and wear with any white trainers or converse etc.

It was inevitable that such an easy outfit would become so ubiquitous that the fashion world declared it "dead".

I'm gutted but I am a follower of style. So yes, I know it's shallow but this is the Style board so.... What other outfits fit the brief?

One journalist in the Sunday papers suggested trouser suits are the new floral midi dress and trainers. But I don't think a trouser suit would work in a hot day like a flowery dress would, no matter how much you keep it casual with a t-shirt and trainers - it's still too hot surely?

If you're a follower of trends, what will you be wearing instead of floral midi from now on?

Sticking with the floral dresses.
I fear change.

In my defence, I was wearing it before it became trendy so feel it’s okay to wear it after the trend fucks off.

And converse are practical for work.

PennyForearm · 08/04/2023 13:00

I’ll still be wearing my floral midis dresses and trainers, but then I still love and wear skinny jeans which are also apparently passé.

RobinRobinMouse · 08/04/2023 13:01

Another one sticking with it, some things never really go out of fashion!! (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.😁)

HelpsHeal · 08/04/2023 13:03

I think dresses will become less flowy but the dress and trainers is here to stay. Maybe more t-shirt style dresses.?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/04/2023 13:03

I’m also still wearing skinny jeans. Frequently with a dress over the top.

I came of age 1998 - 2001 and it REALLY shows…

Lastnamedidntstick · 08/04/2023 13:05

I’m still wearing my maxi dresses from the 90’s.

seeing as my late teens DD’s now seem to be wearing pretty much the same stuff I did- combats and fitted tees, jeans and band tees etc, I am sure I will be absolutely on trend this summer 😂

dottiedodah · 08/04/2023 13:13

I will be keeping with this trend! I think your own style is important .I love floral dresses.Cant see everyone throwing theirs out somehow!

CovertImage · 08/04/2023 13:23

There is a bit of irony in that sentence!

Pigeon31 · 08/04/2023 13:25

Bootcut jeans and a blazer (I would happily wear a colourful trouser suit if I owned one - floral dresses can get in the bin! :) )

NatashaDancing · 08/04/2023 13:34

I'll still be wearing my floral dresses. I didn't wear them with trainers.

Whitewolf2 · 08/04/2023 13:34

I’ve seen quite a lot of shirred style block colour dresses in the shops, and long length denim skirts seem to be in a lot of magazines?

BCBird · 08/04/2023 13:37

Sticking with floral and trainers.do not give a sh*t🤪

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/04/2023 13:40

I’m going for wide leg linen trousers, and linen colour block dresses in neutral colours. Dressed up or down with jewellery and flats/heels.

OatMilkLattes · 08/04/2023 13:41

I really don’t believe this - there are literally thousands of woman who have this look as their uniform during the spring/summer months. It allows us to feel put together and comfortable at the same time!

I can possibly see that florals are a bit ‘out’ - but they work so well for the time of year when done tastefully. Take a look at Rixo - a gorgeous brand I always associate with lovely prints.

Wear what you want and be happy.

FWIW I work in luxury fashion and am constantly analysing trends. I shall still be wearing dresses and trainers - maybe not florals and converse, but I am staying on this boat in some capacity!

TheNinthLock · 08/04/2023 13:44

I’m sticking with my beloved (in some cases floral) dresses.
Such a waste throwing them out and buying new in pursuit of ‘fashion’.

TheOGCCL · 08/04/2023 13:46

I didn’t/don’t wear this trend at all. I don’t like dresses and I feel the cold so could easily imagine wearing a trouser suit! I wear jeans or chinos or VERY occasionally (must be 25 degrees or higher) shorts with various tops and shirts.

One look is the oversized striped shirt worn as an over layer with something more fitted underneath. Every shop has a version of this shirt so available in various colours (green, pink, blue, orange, yellow). I think a shirt is one of the most versatile pieces you can buy.

Matchymatchylemonscratchy · 08/04/2023 13:48

I’ve been wearing floral maxi and midi dresses for over a decade and don’t intend to stop now. I don’t wear them with trainers though.

I’ve had the same two pairs of skinny jeans for five years and no plans to ditch them either.

I wear pencil skirts to work and notice no one else has for years.

I’m deeply uncool and I’m fine with it.

highfidelity · 08/04/2023 13:49

A floral dress with white trainers is timeless classic; it transcends fashion trends. If you enjoy wearing it, continue to do so. Ans besides, I would have thought that as one ages, it's about finding one's own style rather than feeling the need to bow to what's deemed fashionable (or not).

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/04/2023 13:49

I’m not a floral person (love them on other people but not on me) and last year had a fab gingham midi dress from Monki that I loved so much I got in three colour-ways. I think I’ll stick with those, and spotted they have other colours this year too.

I pretty much always wear trainers so won’t be changing that - but I have switched to a more chunky “dad style”. Converse are too flat for me as I have PF but one of my friends recently got some of the platform (flat-form?) ones and they look great on her, like a modern twist.

Comfies · 08/04/2023 13:50

I have one floral midi and I only really wear it for work with boots or ballet flats ATM. It will look fine with sandals too when it gets warmer.

I'm hoping white trainers will look ok with other dresses, but will adjust as fashions change. I don't mind doing that, as I do like fashion without being ott about it. And anyway, my white trainers will always look alright with jeans, shorts etc and my dresses will always look alright with some shoes or boots so I won't be getting rid of anything

I love a t shirt dress.

MissMarplesbag · 08/04/2023 13:55

Change to single colour dresses and coloured or black trainers for a more updated version of the look.

MargotDeWitt · 08/04/2023 13:59

I am sticking with dresses and trainers this spring as I was late to the party on this one, only embracing last summer, and do like the style of it, so don't really care if it's officially out of fashion!

MrsCarson · 08/04/2023 14:02

I like dresses and trainers, I think it still looks nice. I rarely wear a dress though as I always feel cold. So use leggings or jeggings with a dress or tunic and trainers or flip flops.

SisterAgatha · 08/04/2023 14:08

I wear close fitting midis with a ruche and a t shirt. Chunky gladiator sandals. I don’t know if it’s fashion or not, I am a bit grungy anyway, ex goth.
