Pixie cut- talk me out of it

Potaytoe5 · 06/04/2023 01:51

As in the title. I LOVE pixie cuts. On other women! My hair just reached past my shoulders, for the past few years I've chopped it to a bob at this stage, always regretting it immediately. Please can someone help me grow it out without chopping it and having to live with a paper bag on my face. I could pull off a pixie, but I wouldn't style it or trim regularly, ending up looking like a sad mushroom. Why do I always get the itch to cut it!!

Go for it!!!! 👦

Potaytoe5 · 06/04/2023 02:18

Nooo! I would love it for a month and then spend a year hiding from people, desperately growing it out 😆

Don't do it. I went from waist length hair to a pixie cut. Looked amazing, really suited me, but I absolutely hated it when I had it done. I felt completely un feminine, felt I had to completely change my style of dress, wear more make up etc to feel better. Spent many hours crying and regretting and buying clip in hair extensions. 100% would never do it again.

Phoebo · 06/04/2023 03:13

You need the right face to pull off a pixie cut. Also extremely high maintenance

LHReturns · 06/04/2023 03:20

Unless you look like Audrey Hepburn, don’t do it.

Potaytoe5 · 06/04/2023 05:04

@USaYwHatNow I'm so sorry! Did you have to wear more modern and funky clothes to go with your new hair? I'm just trying to rediscover my style, I don't think it would go together. I don't have lovely long hair to miss it though. I think it would suit my face but I would hate it too.. maybe...

I'm no Audrey but more Michelle Williams.i think it would suit my face, that's the problem. I don't like the high maintenance though..with 2 small DC I wouldn't keep up. My boring ponytail feels so.. boring!

FlibbertyGibbitt · 06/04/2023 06:54

think you’d love it for for the first three weeks then as it grew out you’d be forever booking hair appointments or waiting for it to grow out which would take aggggeesssss

Menopants · 06/04/2023 07:01

It’s very liberating! But then I also have silver hair which in mumsnet land means I’m a terrible old hag.

JamNittyGritty · 06/04/2023 07:01

I am a very low maintenance person and I love my pixie cut. Day to day it is so much quicker and easier to manage than any other length hair, literally needs nothing doing - and when I wash it it take a few minutes to hairdryer- easy. It does however need cutting max every 3 months- that is annoying and expensive. Unlike PP I do feel very feminine with mine.

ditavonteesed · 06/04/2023 07:17

Do it, I'm just growing mine out but I've had it a few years and I love it. As for expensive I go to a barbers so cost about a fiver to get it cut. Dries really quick. Always looks funky. Actually you might be talking me into getting mine cut again.

Mochinated · 06/04/2023 07:21

Go to the mens it's cheaper and the same cut!

You can experiment with hair dyes more easily as less hair to manage.

I've had short hair 4 times so far and loved it. I grow it out cos I get bored.

MinnieEgg · 06/04/2023 07:23

Sorry but i think you should do it as well.

I've had one before and I found it so low maintenance, by far the easiest hair I've ever had. The trick is to make regular appointments in advance or even better, go to the barbers. Walk in. Five minutes. Done.

Then extra number of time you spend getting a pixie cut maintained is far outweighed by the time you save not arsing about with long hair.

MinnieEgg · 06/04/2023 07:24

Actually you might be talking me into getting mine cut again.

Me too.

grannycake · 06/04/2023 07:27

Ive recently gone for a pixie. My hair was shoulder length but I rarely wore it loose so went mid length but I couldn;t cope with the styling needed.

It now takes me 5 mins max to wash, condition and a quick blast with the hairdryer.

I do go every 6/7 weeks for a cut though

Mouthfulofquiz · 06/04/2023 07:33

I loved my pixie cut. But I went monthly to the hairdressers to keep it nice. THEN I decided to grow it out and I looked like shit for about 2 years. I really really don’t suit bobs (round face).

SwimmingAgainstTheTides · 06/04/2023 07:34

I work with someone who carries it off perfectly, she doesn't wear make-up or colour her hair, she's very natural, she just has the right features.
It wouldn't work on me, you seem confident it would suit you, the worst you could do is have to grow it out.

Potaytoe5 · 06/04/2023 09:07

@Mouthfulofquiz I also have a round face
I am allergic to most hair dyes, so realistically my pixie would be either light ash brown or heanned orangey red....

I shaved most of mine, just have some left at the front which I plait, tie back, high fringe or leave curly. I have a multitude of scarves too. I now clipper it myself. So easy to deal with!

I'd gone from bum length to shoulder length to extreme. I don't miss it at all.

ThanksForYourHelp · 06/04/2023 09:41

If you have a pixie cut, you can wear anything you damn well please. Daily maintenance is simple. You just need to be able to get a trim every four weeks.

TheOGCCL · 06/04/2023 09:47

I feel like if you regret a bob then a pixie is risky!!

I did it and am currently in a bit of a growing out phase though I doubt I'll ever go back to long hair, there are plenty of options in the middle.

Agree with PPs it was actually easier to manage day to day which offset the cuts. And to dye it. Even when I had bedhead and hadn't done anything to it, it sort of looked cool rather than untended to.

I felt more confident as there's nothing to hide behind but also less feminine (not that we are supposed to care about that) and it also gave me an older, more 'grown up' aura.

I have a low hairline so it kept having to be literally shaved at the bottom back and I didn't like the feeling of stubble.

I did feel I had to change some of my clothes. I have a long neck and body so it felt I was all neck/decolletage and I ended up buying a lot of high neck tops and shirts. Though I might have done that anyway as they are more fashionable than v necks. I got more dainty earrings too as I don't like that the short hair/big earrings look.

I like to experiment with my hair so that was just another phase. It grows back and the world doesn't end. It helps you learn more about what you like. But it's a slow process. I'm enjoying each stage as it comes of that but some might not.

I would say the hairdresser is key, both for the original cut but also any growing back cuts.

octoberafternoons · 06/04/2023 10:00

I'm glad I tried the pixie style but it did make me feel like some of my usual clothes didn't work for me at all during that time. It really changed the proportions of my upper body somehow and especially a lot dresses looked odd. I was surprised because I've always worn my hair up a lot rather than down and around my neck/shoulders. I grew mine back quite quickly and feel more me with longer hair. Loved how easy it was to wash and style though!

Potaytoe5 · 06/04/2023 16:49

So far it seems most people are happy they've gone with a pixie! I'm wondering if there's a way to test if I'd like it? Pin my hair up in a faux pixie for a week? It wouldn't give me the experience of morning hair.
Do you find more modern and 'edgy' clothing styles match pixies better? I'm not sure if that would feel like 'me'.

Mine wasn't Hugh maintenance at all and I've had all manner of short pixie style cuts.

EffortlessDesmond · 06/04/2023 17:08

Pixie or a variant on a pixie is my default, but my hair is grey and curly, and it usually grows out well, thanks to my wonderful stylist.
