Pixie cut- talk me out of it

Potaytoe5 · 06/04/2023 01:51

As in the title. I LOVE pixie cuts. On other women! My hair just reached past my shoulders, for the past few years I've chopped it to a bob at this stage, always regretting it immediately. Please can someone help me grow it out without chopping it and having to live with a paper bag on my face. I could pull off a pixie, but I wouldn't style it or trim regularly, ending up looking like a sad mushroom. Why do I always get the itch to cut it!!

I loved my pixie! Had short hair for years, but it stopped suiting me after I had DC1 and my face got quite round. And then I didn't have the time to go to my hairdresser every 6-8 weeks for a trim. I miss it though - I'd do it again (less round face now!), if I had the time and money to get it cut regularly. It was so low maintenance - it air dried in minutes.

I could have written your post word for word op.
In fact when I search for threads Re pixie cuts many of my old posts over the years pop up!

I love pixie cuts - I don't thi k you need to wear make up, use hair dye or re-evaluate your wardrobe. It's a gorgeous cut that suits 99% of people.

But - I have very very fine soft hair that means I have to run something to texturised my hair over all my hair or it just looks like a fluffy vague fuzz around my head, not the intended look. Also, being so fine means it won't hold up to. Any styling so often flops flat which is annoying.

Appointments - you have to have a regular trim, depending on yoyr hairdresser, is this a cost (and time) you are happy to factor in?

If you get bored of it... You gave to suffer the dreaded mushroom phase for months.

I'm 2 years growing mine out (just before Christmas the hairdresser I went to gave me the worst rushed haircut as her next client was being squeezed in with my appointment grrr!) and messed up my jaw length hair so I had to have a load cut off again. It is a very frustrating process!!

Love pixie cuts

OneCup · 07/04/2023 01:50

I'm away on holiday abroad right now and noticed so many more women with pixie cuts. Made me reflect it's not as common in the UK, which is a shame as it looks so lovely and 'fresh' on so many women.

HarlanPepper · 07/04/2023 06:16

I absolutely loved my pixie cut and it did suit me: I had my hair that length for years. My favourite thing about it was it really was a wash-and-go cut: towel dry, a bit of hair putty for texture, that's it.

The only downside is the regular trims, and the fact that if you suddenly want a big change, it's pretty much buzzcut or bust. I did go the buzzcut route and had that for another couple of years, and now it's shaggy bob length, finally, after an agonising grow out, prolonged by one 'trim' that put me back months. If you do get tired of it, the grow out phase takes forever. But in ever other respect, it's the queen of cuts. I want to have longer hair for a bit but there's definitely another pixie in my future.

SocksAndTheCity · 07/04/2023 07:09

Did it in 1996 and hated it - I cried for weeks, felt (and looked) huge because my head looked so tiny and the growing out was even worse. Never again.

ImustLearn2Cook · 07/04/2023 07:18

I’ve had pixie cut that I loved then hairdresser moved away. I couldn’t find another who could cut it as well as her. So, I’ve spent 2 years growing it out and going through that hideous stage.

If you want to cut your hair but want to keep the length could you go for a layered style?

Some hairdressers just aren’t very good at cutting the pixie style. And you won’t know until they have cut it.

Potaytoe5 · 07/04/2023 07:44

It's a tough one. I've noticed that every year, for the past few years, I ALWAYS cut my hair shorter when it reaches my shoulders. There's nothing wrong with it condition-wise, it's healthy and shiny, I think it's just something about the 'middle' length that I dislike.
I'm going to try to push past it and grow it longer and see how I like it.
If I cut it to a pixie now, it would take me 2 years for it to grow to my collarbone again :S.
I like the idea of standing out and being the only woman with short hair.... non conformist in me just loves the idea.
I am very concerned about keeping up with the regular cuts and morning hair. I remember that vividly. Even leaning on a wall for a while always created kinks in my fine hair :O

But lots of women have short hair - there's nothing remotely 'non conformist' about it?

The middle length is definitely crap though I was so glad once mine got past my shoulders.

Potaytoe5 · 07/04/2023 07:52

Maybe it's just in my area, but all the mums on the school run have long hair! Only a few grannies wear it short. So it would stand out in my age group.

Potaytoe5 · 07/04/2023 07:54

Not that it would be enough to make me go through all the effort, mind you.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 07/04/2023 07:58

I had it done last month and I love it! It's so easy to wash and style. Happy to post before and after photos

JoyceDivision79 · 07/04/2023 09:21

Ooh MyGhastIsFlabbered would love to see before and after pics!

RockaLock · 07/04/2023 11:49

@MyGhastIsFlabbered your pixie is really nice, it suits you really well.

And I love your before "I hate my hair" and after "I love my hair!" expressions Grin

FlowersAndBonnets · 07/04/2023 11:51

Don’t do it. Not a single woman can pull off a pixie cut. They’re awful.

Take Emma Watson, for example. Absolutely stunning, beautiful woman. Gets a pixie cut and it takes all her attractiveness and beauty away.

LlamasUnited · 07/04/2023 12:02

Lots of people will egg you on, but they often don’t look very flattering. Only very thin, beautiful people with perfect bone structure can really pull them off (Audrey Hepburn has been mentioned, but also Hallie Berry, Winona Ryder, Natalie Portman, that sort of person) and even then, most of them would look better with longer hair. But at the end of the day, do what makes you happy.

User4873628 · 07/04/2023 12:05

I've just done it and I love it!

I'm a bit like you, i go through cycles of growing long, chopping sort, growing long.

And I agree that short hair does need more regular cutting and that is annoying.

Eventysaurus · 07/04/2023 12:08

Omg I want a pixie! My hair is highlighted blonde but its dry and wavy.

I love it short. But I hate it long bob or longer. I just end up looking like James May.

I am looking at "long pixies" or "pixie bobs" - then I might go shorter after that

MrsMitford3 · 07/04/2023 12:09

I really wouldn't.

Don't underestimate the value of the ponytail with young DC.

I did a not quite so drastic cut and hated it-too much faffing and was full of regret...

I think growing a bit past the middle meh point a good idea at the moment!

Potaytoe5 · 07/04/2023 12:10

@MyGhastIsFlabbered I think it looks great on you, makes you look very energetic. I think longer was good on you as well. I like your hair colour!

OP posts:
Potaytoe5 · 07/04/2023 12:16

I think I would do it, but I won't because I wouldn't keep up with the trims, and I would hate the grow out phase ;)
I'm clearly going through a 'meh' length right now. I think I might colour it darker / get a fringe instead of going full pixie. My hair is very healthy and shiny and it would be a shame to cut it off.
I do not have an elfin face, more of a round one with round nose, so I run a risk of looking like a young boy.
Saying that I think pixie can look great and not always worse than long hair.

@MyGhastIsFlabbered love it! ❤️

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 07/04/2023 12:22

I’ve had short hair but never a pixie cut.

My auntie has had short hair (short layered) and even she says (and having been a hairdresser herself in the past) they short hair needs regular cuts to look good.

I do think you need to realise that features like ears and neck will be more exposed. I recall going to a short layered wedge cut at 17 (sort of unplanned) from a long grown out perm and lots of women friends (older) commented that they could see my face. I actually quite liked the growing out stage and had an Emily Lloyd (Wish You Were Here) perm which was about a year or two after the film came out, did suit me though!
