Pixie cut- talk me out of it

Potaytoe5 · 06/04/2023 01:51

As in the title. I LOVE pixie cuts. On other women! My hair just reached past my shoulders, for the past few years I've chopped it to a bob at this stage, always regretting it immediately. Please can someone help me grow it out without chopping it and having to live with a paper bag on my face. I could pull off a pixie, but I wouldn't style it or trim regularly, ending up looking like a sad mushroom. Why do I always get the itch to cut it!!

Why are people so rude! Think you all look great

I was going to suggest a colour change for now op to give yourself more time to think but still freshen up your look

christmascalypso · 07/04/2023 14:22

@MyGhastIsFlabbered You look great with the pixie cut! Makes you look younger actually. Take no notice of the rude poster.

HarlanPepper · 07/04/2023 14:25

I live @MyGhastIsFlabbered cut too. Really brings out your eyes.

HarlanPepper · 07/04/2023 14:25

Chesneyhawkes1 · 07/04/2023 14:27

I've got one. Went from boob length long hair to it. I probably do look uglier but hey ho.

I do a lot of sport and washing and drying long hair every day - sometimes twice was a pain in the arse.

And it was always just in a pony tail. So I thought what's the point of having it.

How rude!!

catinboots simply said what many of us are thinking.
It made her look decades older and more masculine.

Sadly I agree. Probably could have said it in a nicer way though 😀

It's difficult style to pull off, though the last couple of pictures, of Harlan and Show, are examples of that IMO.

helebard · 07/04/2023 14:34

Examples of it suiting them I should say.

Luredbyapomegranate · 07/04/2023 14:37

If you are a bit Michelle Williams you’ll pull it off.

could you commit to maintain for 6 months so you have the pixie experience it sounds like you want?

Then scarfs / headbands will have to be your friend as you grow it out.

DigitalTranny · 07/04/2023 14:40

Do it gradually. First go for a chin bob, then a shorter bob. And if you still feel like a pixie cut after all this, then have it.
Anyway, hair grows. Why moan about it?

HaroldTheStallion · 07/04/2023 14:43

Love mine, I do need to get it done about every 6 weeks mostly because the roots look really obvious with short hair but also because it gets really puffy looking when it's overgrown. I'm 50 and feel like it makes me look younger.

I think that PP did look better with longer hair, but the main issue is the colour isn’t the best with her skin tone. With a colour that suits her better both cuts would look better.

I'd rather consider pros and cons than have to actually moan about it for 6+ months when it grows back! As I seem to be in a yearly cycle of cutting it short and moaning about it anyway, maybe I think I shouldn't.

@catinboooots & @MummyDearest3 did you miss tact and diplomacy classes at school?

I've actually had far more compliments on my hair - most people love it and I've been told numerous times it makes me look decades younger.

Luckily I'm not a sensitive flower but jeez - why be unkind if you don't have to? I love my new hair, as do my husband and my friends.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/04/2023 14:53

I wouldn't. The only people who can really carry it off are those with excellent bone structure and no sagging. The rest of us should go for some form of bob if we're going short.

Yes, that might be it @Luredbyapomegranate

NotQuiteUsual · 07/04/2023 15:02

I still miss mine. I really enjoyed growing it out too. Seeing all the different lengths on me. I think there's something so feminine and chic about them. Growing them out really isn't that bad. You learn to chop the mullet off periodically till the top catches up. It took three years to grow back past my shoulders though. It's a big commitment.

ChopOrNot · 07/04/2023 15:27

I think @MyGhastIsFlabbered looks fabulous with the shorter hair - it highlights her eyes and cheekbones. The longer hair kind brought the eye down.

I did a pixie a few years back when getting rid of the dye /embracing the grey.. Also wanted my old ringlets/curl back, which the constant dyeing had fucked. I knew I would succumb to more dye if I just let the roots grow - so chopped it all off to force me to go through with it.

The initial cut/style was OK (pic with glasses). I didn't love it at all. I then learnt how to best style it (white top) away from my face. This is actually probably one of the most flattering photos ever of me though...😀
The grow out was a pain (turquoise top) - but doable. The key is to keep the back short whilst growing out the top. I also found clips/hairbands useful for some stages. And actually, in someways, it was an enjoyable part of my hair journey - as I was probably more adventurous and tried more looks than any other time to hide the kinky/not quite long enough to curl, just frequently looked shite

Then pic of me a few weeks back. Awful lighting - I am actually more alive than that photo suggests...

So actually, I think my most flattering cut is actually the pixie with the white top. I think it is the haircut I have had the most compliments on. But I also love my curls. My issue with going back to the pixie is just how fucking long curly hair seems to take to grow again, so not sure if I could face doing it again. If the 20 minute curly wash routine gets unmanageable when I am older I will not rule it out. Just enjoying the curls for now.

@Potaytoe5 Just do it. It will grow back.

Would it make you feel good?

I totally think can do it but you must promise yourself to make time for regular cuts- a bit of you time? Your worth the investment!

HaroldTheStallion · 07/04/2023 15:49

I'm 50 and I do think it suits, makes me look younger according to DH. But most importantly I love the way it feels and how easy it is to style.

Potaytoe5 · 07/04/2023 16:03

Not sure if pixie would make me happy. Maybe I could take a couple of inches and go back to a longer bob + colour. Or go similar to Camron Diaz's longer pixie- I have a wide face like she does. Or I will just get a fringe! Thank you all for sharing your experiences :)

I bloody love mine, but it took four or five salons before I found someone who was brilliant at precision cutting, with an eye-watering cost to match. Definitely worth it though and much better than the faff when I had long hair.

I disagree that you need perfect features to pull it off either, ‘pixie’ covers a wide range and can be adapted to flatter.

ApplesandPares · 07/04/2023 16:28

How about something like this.

Orangebadger · 07/04/2023 16:40

I love pixie cuts, but having had one when I was younger I always felt like I needed to wear more make up which I really can't be bothered with and I needed to wear more feminine clothes, whereas I am more of jeans and t shirt girl. Also the maintenance!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 07/04/2023 16:58

I think @MyGhastIsFlabbered looks years younger and way more vibrant with the pixie. Long hair can be so boring and can really drag the face down.

Potaytoe5 · 07/04/2023 17:23

@Orangebadger I think I feel exactly the same... I think I like the idea of a pixie more than the practicalities! I think going to the hairdresser twice a year is enough for me.
@ApplesandPares that looks like a lot of styling!
