Well, we're in the run up to C day, now. Thanks to @chesterelly for the thread title suggestion 😊

I totally agree. You have the tiaras use them!! I'm picturing something like Carrie Johnston's wedding look. Hopefully they mean for Charlotte- now she would look lovely with a floral headpiece.

If Kate wears a ludicrous headband or a floral headdress like she's at a woodland wedding I will be most disappointed.
Get out the gems.

White gowns floral headbands. Very midsummer night's dream.

This article seems to make a bit more sense, although not sure how accurate www.hellomagazine.com/fashion/royal-style/490580/what-will-royal-ladies-wear-coronation/?viewas=amp

So if the info in this article is correct, we get to see the bling at the Friday night shindig... but unlikely to see any on Sat except for the coronation jewels on KC & QC. My head says yes sensible approach.. but my heart wants to see the full on tiara long frock spectacle at Westminster Abbey.

Oh dear lord, no.
You're spot on, @LadyVictoriaSponge . Making the Coronation ordinary/plain/ low key won't appease those against it and will just disappoint those looking forward to a bit of sparkle, colour and pomp. Lose/lose.

Agree with both of you, a lose all round if that's what happens.

DuchessOfPort · 01/05/2023 08:11

I would also prefer high bling.

Watching the previous coronation, when you think that all this tradition and history in a fairly infrequent service survived intact for hundreds and hundreds of years, made it to 1953 and is now being sluiced away for no really good reason that I can see? Coronets and ermine aren’t costing the taxpayer. And honestly Britain was on its knees in the post war 1953 and that coronation was beautiful and full of ancient symbolism. Paring back the glamour and history to lounge suits and headbands really makes no one happy.

KillingMeDeftly · 01/05/2023 08:19

I get that 2023 is far more different to 1953 than that year was to 1936, the previous coronation. But if you're going low-key then have a low-key ceremony without any pomp at all. But if it's still going to cost millions the give us some glamour!

Now if they're really mean they won't release photos of the Friday night event...

Maireas · 01/05/2023 08:26

1953 was a time of proper austerity. There was rationing, there were still shortages, the cities still bomb ravaged. It was a moment of joy and colour and celebration, perhaps more than the sum of it's parts. Something indefinable, arcane and mystical.
Perhaps a bit of magic is what we need.
Cancelling it won't close the food banks or increase nurses' pay.

Whoa. This ring is the ultimate sparkler and I fancy the coronation brooch too! Just to show my allegiance to the crown!

I think people were more deferential towards royalty in general in 1953, whereas there's far more questions asked now. Which is a good thing overall but I kind of feel like you either have a coronation with all the bells and whistles or you don't have one at all.

A cut-price coronation doesn't really suit anyone - republicans will still be furious at the cost and royalists will want more pomp and pageantry!

I don't think any of the other European royals have coronations these days, do they?

Maireas · 01/05/2023 19:21

Gorgeous tiaras!

Vitriolinsanity · 01/05/2023 20:18

It's also a different coronation in that a 25 year old daughter of a beloved Wartime king isn't in the, dare I say it, hot seat. Not a seat I'd like to sit in personally.

KC seems to recognise that. Deference is not automatic. His coronation is a chance to mark his own path.

No one can deny the man has made some whopper mistakes along the way. Haven't we all? But, it's what you do next that makes the difference.

Meanwhile, as @Maireas well knows, I have had the the KE crown bagsied as my titfer of choice for many spreadsheets. I mean, I'm happy to loan it, given the occasion. But I blooming well want it back given my entire wardrobe matches now.

Serenster · 01/05/2023 20:20

If Valentine Hoy is right about the no tiara for Kate (boo!), I do wonder whether it’s because she’s going to copy the looks of the Queen’s maids of honour, who wore floral headdresses. Something I could definitely see her going for…

@Vitriolinsanity what have you got to match KE crown for Saturday? Do tell me it's something with an ermine trim?

SenecaFallsRedux · 01/05/2023 20:54

I think that one reason that the 1953 coronation was obviously so grand and full of bling was that it was stuffed to the rafters with hereditary peers and peeresses. This 2023 coronation significantly downplays the role of hereditary aristocrats. Furthermore, you can tell from the published order of service that it emphasizes the Monarch's servanthood and aims to be emblematic of a much more diverse and inclusive society than existed in 1953. I think that even with a more toned down spectacle aspect, it will be very moving and also very impressive. I don't expect to be disappointed.

I think Wax did, or maybe it was called an "installation", and Felipe was just sworn in.

I'm watching the Windsors special and killing myself laughing at Anne being put in charge of a cut-price coronation!

SenecaFallsRedux · 01/05/2023 21:08

The UK is the only country in Europe that has an actual coronation, meaning putting a crown on top of someone's head. Others have installations, inaugurations, swearing- ins, etc, but no crowning.

Gothambutnotahamster · 01/05/2023 21:13

No one does pomp & circumstance like we do Grin

Papergirl1968 · 01/05/2023 22:05

Looking at photos of Eugenie out with Beatrice, I wonder if she''ll make the coronation, as she looks ready to.pop.

Just looking at the big bump reminds me how uncomfortable I felt at this stage. Never passing by a loo, trying to get comfortable in bed, getting stuck in the bath once. Poor Eugenie I hope she can excuse herself from the occasion.

Having gone over two weeks over due (on very firm IVF dates) I was ready to pop for about a month but it felt like about a year. I hope she doesn't have too long to wait.
