What to wear to smart London wedding in April?

I haven't been to a wedding in years and I'm feeling a bit lost!

The wedding will be full of trendy London PR types and I'm a 40 something mum from the Midlands.

I'm 5'4" and size 10-12. April weather can be changeable and I don't like showing my legs, so nothing shorter than midi length. I prefer floaty shapes to clingy.

Please help me out with some ideas / links! Budget up to £100, possibly a bit more for something I can wear again.

Thank you Smile

Forgot to say, it's a church wedding.

That's lovely @Bigcheesey . Did you wear anything over it?

I didn’t as it was crazy hot but see no reason you couldn’t pop a trench coat over it.

I would avoid prints that can seen "mumsy", and look for a plain colour dresses. Or a trouser suit as suggested above!

Geranium1984 · 02/04/2023 10:00

Try renting a nice dress.... I've got two under two so haven't been anywhere in a while but quite a few friends have rented outfits for weddings and balls etc recently. I think LK bennet do it and some big department stores

I would avoid a midi dress if you’re hoping to fit in with a fashionable crowd - maybe a trouser suit? Lots of nice options on Asos.

I came on here to say that trouser suits seem to be having a moment. I'd buy one if I had an occasion to wear it to. (I do not Sad).

Few suggestions. Zara, two from & Other Stories, green from Net-a-Porter sale. Tap for prices.

I'd go for a pistachio trouser suit too. My first though was that you'd struggle to get one in budget, but this suit from M&S would be bang on 98 quid so it's clearly not impossible.

Thanks all. I'm definitely not a ditsy floral type and prefer bold solid colours or prints.

I'll take a look at trousers suits though, good shout.

Don't wear a trouser suit to a wedding. If it is a church wedding you will probably need a hat.
These all look like day at the office wear.

Whataretheodds · 02/04/2023 10:43

Of course you can wear a trouser suit to a wedding!

Whataretheodds · 02/04/2023 10:44

What shoes do you have?

The Op says a smart wedding in the title
Smart wedding implies formal dress and hat- not a trouser suit.

I disagree. The last few church weddings I’ve been to, barely anyone wore a hat. Certainly none of the fashionable women wore them.

I think a trouser suit would be fab. I’m going to a wedding in June and I am thinking of the same.

Definitely not. At a smart London wedding, that would be likely to look off and rather staid/trad.

Tryphenia · 02/04/2023 10:53

I’d wear a Ghost dress or a trouser suit. Or maybe a jumpsuit.

Hongkongsuey · 02/04/2023 10:59

I think you should look at hiring rather than buying for this event. You’ll get something fashionable but not waste a lot of money. And it’ll look ‘smart’ if that’s the look you’re after. I wish I’d done it rather than have dresses clogging up my wardrobe that I’ll rarely wear again. Or even something like LK Bennett borrowed for a month.

TolkiensFallow · 02/04/2023 11:00

Jumpsuit? Easy to accessorise and wear again? This one is reduced from £149 to £52 on the coast website…

How many smart London church weddings do you attend/ see?

I see them pretty much daily as I live in Westminster .

Very much hats and dresses. Church weddings are by their nature traditional.

massivenamechnage · 02/04/2023 11:27

What is the dress code for men? That helps to determine the level of formality/smartness for women
