What to wear to smart London wedding in April?

Opihr · 02/04/2023 08:54

I haven't been to a wedding in years and I'm feeling a bit lost!

The wedding will be full of trendy London PR types and I'm a 40 something mum from the Midlands.

I'm 5'4" and size 10-12. April weather can be changeable and I don't like showing my legs, so nothing shorter than midi length. I prefer floaty shapes to clingy.

Please help me out with some ideas / links! Budget up to £100, possibly a bit more for something I can wear again.

Thank you Smile

Definitely check out Vinted and ebay. You often find great occasion wear.

Seamstress of Bloomsbury if you like a vintage look.

@Opihr A trouser suit in a pastel colour. Not brights. Utterly chic right now. Lovely blouse underneath. You will wear it again! The Telegaph fashion page suggested chartreuse silky trousers and a cream tweed (Chanel) type jacket recently. They said the dress has had its day! I know what I would choose. Plus a headband or straw hat.

My DSIS is very much a London PR type (she is very well known)
She wore a 100 stars stork dress for a recent family event

I'd go to By Rotation and rent something by Zimmerman or Ulla Johnson or, if it's a smart (posh) wedding, Beulah or Eponine or Suzannah London. Plus hat. By Rotation have a wedding guest section, so if none of those appeal you can browse. If you're planning to wear a trouser suit, take a look at how Sarah Corbett Winder styles them on Insta - with nothing underneath, '90s style sandals, big shades and a frivolous little bag. I like Laia Alen (Spanish brand) for wedding bags.

My favourite local church! Its flint walls are amazing.

A trouser suit or even a shirt/trouser co-ord will be fine and more current than a floral dress. Or, a mixture of the both which you would get tons of use out of after the event. Also, Collagerie's latest collection for Jigsaw might be worth a look.

That's a pair of pyjamas.

🙄

Will tell that to a friend who is the aforementioned trendy PR type who is wearing that to a wedding next week. FWIW, another who wore something similar by La Double J to a v. posh wedding last summer.

There's more to wedding dressing than a floral flock and hat, some wouldn't be seen dead in something so prosaic. Was merely offering OP some different ideas.

I refuse to believe that a trendy PR type is wearing something from Marks & Spencer's to a wedding.

You'd be surprised.

Also, OP's budget is up to £100.

Firstly, forget the hat. I only see hats at country weddings or races. Personally, I would go for something quite simple - a navy jumpsuit or aforementioned trouser suit as a canvas and accessorise it well. I've seen really beautiful big hair clips, or layered necklaces and funky shoes that can really provide a focal point to your outfit.

Renting is something I'm planning on doing next time too.

Quitelikeacatslife · 03/04/2023 09:11

I'm a big fan of scamp and dude , prints but not ditsy, they wear really well too, nicely made for the budget. Great to wear again with sandals or pumps too

As someone who is friends with plenty of "trendy London PR types" I can assure you that they wear all sorts of brands and (as PR isn't actually that well paid) love a bargain. I can well believe that someone in PR is wearing that M&S outfit, why not?

But OP's dilemma is not how to pass as someone who works in PR, it's what to wear to a wedding. In her shoes and assuming it's in budget, I'd go for a Rixo dress. They have some really lovely things, she'll look great and get wear out of it at future events.

Sunshine275 · 05/04/2023 20:46

If it’s not already been suggested try chi chi London online

Lollzi86 · 05/04/2023 20:59

British retro if you like a vintage style?

fruitbrewhaha · 05/04/2023 21:33

Just wear what you like not what you think everyone else will be wearing/likes.

Even if there are some trendy media types not everyone will be. Just be you.

Luckyduc · 06/04/2023 09:38

Wear what makes you feel good in colours that make you feel good cause if you start wearing things that arnt your style you are going to feel like an absolute plum all day. Forget who they are, and that it's London and just be you and have a good time. The suit idea is just awful BTW (I live in london) ....if it was me, it would be a plain coloured jumpsuit.
Have a great time!!

TizerorFizz · 06/04/2023 16:59

@Luckyduc
The suit idea is awful? Trouser suits are everywhere right now. Or mix trousers with a high quality jacket. You must not see any stylish people. It’s way more stylish then the done to death floral dress without the trainers!
