What to wear to smart London wedding in April?

Opihr · 02/04/2023 08:54

I haven't been to a wedding in years and I'm feeling a bit lost!

The wedding will be full of trendy London PR types and I'm a 40 something mum from the Midlands.

I'm 5'4" and size 10-12. April weather can be changeable and I don't like showing my legs, so nothing shorter than midi length. I prefer floaty shapes to clingy.

Please help me out with some ideas / links! Budget up to £100, possibly a bit more for something I can wear again.

Thank you Smile

For a £100 budget and a style that doesn't fit your normal life I would rent something fabulous.

Opihr · 02/04/2023 11:43

Oooh, that jumpsuit is nice @TolkiensFallow - I've got some fab bright green kitten heels that would work with it I reckon.

Wish I had a crystal ball re the weather!

The church is Great St Bart's, where they filmed Four Weddings.

I think op means trendy/smart rather than conservative/posh/smart. Trouser suit and jumpsuit would be ace, hat unnecessary.

TolkiensFallow · 02/04/2023 12:27

@Opihr I think it would look amazing with green heels/accessories!!

Also quite re-wearable to nice summer events/holiday evenings/afternoon teas etc

Whataretheodds · 02/04/2023 14:36

If you go for the jumpsuit, look to buy rent or borrow a nice blazer to go over the top. Don't even think about a pashmina or cardigan.

OP look up WearsmyMoney on Instagram. She's a fabulous mid 40s ( i think ?) fashion blogger.

This morning her blog is Event Dressing and titled Be The Best Dressed Guest.

Covers

Florals
Polka Dots
Suits
Separates
Lace
The Outnet

Loads of outfits plus all the accessories. A great read.

Pretty sure it'll be helpful.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/04/2023 14:47

Just seen @Hoolihan has already signposted it. 😄 Sorry

Def worth a read.

Ted baker is my go to for weddings, races etc

daisy1765 · 02/04/2023 17:50

Coast and Phase Eight have some lovely clothes, perfect for weddings. Vinted often have their clothes at massively reduced prices if you don't mind second hand.
I love this dress and have been eyeing it up for an upcoming wedding:

Unfortunately trendy London PR types don't shop in Coast or Phase Eight.

Aixellency · 02/04/2023 18:04

Grin@AnnaMagnani. And there was me - trying to keep my mouth 🤐!

AFlockOfTigers · 02/04/2023 18:09

The Coast dress linked doesn't scream Coast though.

TBH I think we've all, including me, over-focussed on the "trendy London PR types" aspect of the brief, and the OP's desire not to look like a hick.

In reality, if she finds a dress she likes and which fits and suits her, from the current Ted Baker/Whistles/Reiss offering then she'll look absolutely fine and nobody will give her a second glance.

Totally.

The OP isn't a 'trendy London PR type' or trying to be one.

She just wants to be a smart version of herself and feel relaxed and suitable.

NormaTheWife · 02/04/2023 18:14

I was at a wedding like this last year and most of the younger women wore dresses or jumpsuits.

"Unfortunately trendy London PR types don't shop in Coast or Phase Eight"

glad I'm not a slave to fashion and wear what suits and looks chic, rather than what's exactly on trend right now.Grin

Rixo!!

Rixo!!

Was going to say the same. Rixo dress, heeled sandals and if needing a hat one of the big massive headbands.

The church is Great St Bart's, where they filmed Four Weddings.

My favourite local church! Its flint walls are amazing.

A trouser suit or even a shirt/trouser co-ord will be fine and more current than a floral dress. Or, a mixture of the both which you would get tons of use out of after the event. Also, Collagerie's latest collection for Jigsaw might be worth a look.

Floral Collared Relaxed Shirt | M&S Collection | M&S

Enliven your ensembles with this shirt, featuring bold and eye-catching florals. It has a comfortable relaxed fit and a v-neck with a collar along with wide, flattering sleeves. Fasten this piece with the classic button-through closure. M&S Collection...

I’d find a block colour jumpsuit, and then fun accessories

Hongkongsuey · 02/04/2023 18:29

Yes I like Rixo-am posting some ideas to hire as you get a far nicer dress. Don’t know your taste or how they would fit-you said you were t floral type.

Check your local charity shops. I've got a fairly formal event soon, and found a great mid calf principals dress which I'm paring with a jacket I already had, a black trench coat (already had) silk wrap (already had) event outside! Just shoes to go, need tan or nude, that's for this week. Outfit is suitable for posh church wedding with optional cream hat (I hate hats so I wouldn't)

WhereAreWeNow · 02/04/2023 18:41

Ghost and Rixo are worth a look. There are some nice Rixo bits in T K Maxx at the moment. I would focus on styles and colours that you know suit you best rather than what's fashionable or what brand it is.
