What are those overboob straps called? They are a mystery to me. Why are they attractive??

Suzi888 · 16/03/2023 08:55

Can’t work out if the straps go over your nipples -ouch. Or if the panels are flesh coloured…. with straps.
Either way. 😳

When would anyone see that bra & think
..Aha, that's perfect to go with my outfit!

I don't think clothes will be worn!

These are lingerie not meant to be hidden under clothing! Well not for long anyway!!! 😈

LapinR0se · 14/03/2023 19:27

What are those cymbal things for??? Genuinely don’t understand

It has to be some firm of bondage wear. Buckles across your boobs and cymbals to play with too..lovely!

Astralitzia · 16/03/2023 08:45

Do you not think it's rather ageist to assume people over 35 wouldn't wear this underwear?

Middle aged people can still have sex lives and appreciate interesting lingerie.

Re-read my post and the one I quoted. I'm commenting on the 'no more midi dresses' crap, not the bras.

If you'd actually read the article, you'd see floral midi dresses are going nowhere. It's in the very first line.

DSD2 used to have a wind-up bear with cymbals that drove DH crazy. Might get the cymbals bra* to mess with his mind.

(*yes, yes, I know they aren't really there).

KirstenBlest · 16/03/2023 09:19

I'm more concerned about the bras worn with flesh-coloured pasties.
There's no room for food in my bra. Smile

And if you read beyond the first line, you'll see the article highlights the mixed messaging on this.

Are you disagreeing with my point that M&S got into difficulties by neglecting its core customers, and that JL is at risk of going the same way?

SocksAndTheCity · 16/03/2023 10:07

I think I missed a bit in the middle of the thread - is it the pasties (nipple covers) that posters are 'hilariously' referring to as 'cymbals'?

The judgement posing as faux confusion about any underwear item that isn't completely plain and utilitarian and the women who might like to wear it is fucking nauseating, although not as nauseating as the ageism. It's possible to have different types of lingerie to serve different purposes just as it is with outside clothes - I'm fifty and I manage to cope with the difference between mostly decorative and mostly practical. I also like to wear both types.

You're so right. Women taking the mick about nipple pasties that look like cymbals is the end of days. It is definitely worth posting about angrily. How right you are to condemn this as "fucking nauseating". And how right you are to identify this as a sinister attempt to suppress women's sexuality. Without you, we were on the brink of a full Aunt Lydia lynching in the knickers aisle.

I just feel humbled and grateful that you were here to save us.

To me, your lingerie which is more risqué and it’s placement in John Lewis sounds and looks like you’re trying to spice up bored, middle aged SAHM/W’s sex lives with 50 Shades of Grey-esque sort of lingerie

Yes and everyone knows that middle aged mothers and wives shouldn't have sex lives because they're so past it, let alone ones that are 'spiced up'. I take it you'll be giving up sex when you hit 45?

What a load of sexist, ageist bollocks.

You’re missing my point. I’m 51 but have never gone off sex or expected women my age both older and younger to go off sex.

But this range seems to me a bit sad and desperate. Yes, me and some friends saw the 50 Shades film in the cinema and laughed ourselves stupid over it!

I hardly think it's porn.

However as PPs have said if you're looking for sexy underwear there are much better versions of similar styles from other retailers.

I don't think there's anything wrong with JL choosing to sell sexier under east on principle. My only issue with this is its badly executed & over priced for something that actually looks like a really cheap version of what other shops sell.

It's like a middle class mumsy mums version of sexy

Always4Brenner · 16/03/2023 10:34

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 16/03/2023 08:39

Yup. It's going through exactly same loop of doom that M&S did 15 years ago - "We don't want these boring middle-aged customers, with their disposable income, whole families to buy for, and appreciation for quality. Only young people matter"...

..inevitably followed by, "Oh crap, none of the young people think we're cool, and now we've alienated our original customer basis".

M&S have pulled themselves back from the brink, but it took them a decade in the retail wilderness. It's depressing to see JL heading the same way. So tediously ageist too - are older people (read 'anyone too old to shop from BooHoo') not allowed to shop?

Get my jackets from boohoo and I love them one a lilac puffer and I’m 56 no dull colours for me I want bright red one for next winter.

nc1013 · 16/03/2023 10:38

Next and M&S both have similar styles to this. It's what is "in" just now. If you don't like it, don't buy it.
I don't like it, wouldn't buy it but I'm not offended or clutching my pearls over it. It's just a different style. Not everything will be to everyone's taste

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 16/03/2023 10:45

Great, but that's exactly my point. JL (like M&S before them) have categorised shoppers into "young/fashionable" and "older/dreary", whereas the truth is much more complicated. Lots of older women want both the flowery midi and the red jacket. We don't want to be told that one is no longer allowed because it's associated with being older, whereas the other is fine because it's associated with youth. See also skinny jeans, bootcut jeans, Bretons etc. Yes they are not on trend, but they are still popular because they are practical and suit many people.

Why is it sad and desperate? Do you consider all underwear that isn't entirely practical sad and desperate?

Compare and contrast the Ann Summers lingerie:-

www.annsummers.com/lingerie/all-lingerie/

its the photography as well as the bras (not all of them) that I think are sad and desperate.

My DB is a professional photographer whose shot lingerie shoots and he wouldn’t shoot the green caged bra or have it styled that way! That bra doesn’t even suit/fit the model well!

BEGONE!

Sorry I normally come on Mumsnet to see reviews of beauty treatments and stumbled across this thread about my brand.. we’re a small business and this is amazing free market research… you guys are an important demographic which is why we put it our brand on JL to begin with (and it’s doing well) so really interesting to see the feedback & give me ideas of how we could do better.. but didn’t mean to put my brand head on 🤣🤣 I get this is not the point .. so I’ll be quiet again ;)

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 16/03/2023 14:21

It can go a bit Mary Whitehouse on MN sometimes.

learieonthewildmoor · 16/03/2023 15:41

Dreadful photo shopping on all those models. They’ve carved wonky lines into the women’s torsos and can’t decide what to do to their legs. One woman in a black bra has had the curves in her breasts removed. Very odd.
This is what you get when you let the pre-press apprentice edit the photos.

Yes, I'm not sure whether the cymbals have been totally photoshopped on, or just digitally 'enhanced' but they are very badly done - look at the edges.

TheMarzipanDildo · 16/03/2023 16:56

No issues with the bras but the pink versions of the first one are far too small for the models!
