So, what do we think about Helen's long hair. Personally, I love it but is she too old, and where did that outdated idea come from anyway?

She’s got an Angelica Houston vibe going on with the longer hair in the first picture, I like it, it’s a bit different and unexpected, the second picture of her usual short hair, yes she looks good and it suits her but it is that typical ‘bouncy bob’ that women over 60 tend to adopt so maybe she just wanted to mix things up a bit.

Ooooh, no it doesn't look good on her. As pps have said, the shoulder length flicky bob type thing she has looks way better. (like in the pics @Bandanadramaposted at 22.05 tonight ) The long hair has made her look older (IMO.)

Nothing to do with her being an older woman, it just does not suit her long. EG; Jane Seymour and Lynda Carter and Crystal Gayle look great with their hair long. Helen doesn't. Looks terrible on her IMO. I can't put into words why... Could be because the three women I mentioned have always had long hair, whilst Helen really only had it when she was very young, and has had it short for some 40 years. So it just doesn't look right long. JMHO.

I'm not going to be as polite as most of you, based on the fairly safe assumption that Helen won't read this thread :)

I think she's fab but she looked bloody awful on Graham Norton last week.

She looks OK in the first pic on this thread but much, much better in the second one.

And she looks like she feels better in the second one too.

Nothing to do with age, just what suits her face.

Older women are not a homogeneous group.

if you’re lucky you will also be an older woman one day.

I wonder if it because Helens is white hair? I feel it looks a bit witchy? Or maybe it looks too much like blonde, so her face looks too old for it?

I would say the first photo is less flattering as she isn't smiling and it's quite a harsh light and not to do with the hairstyle.
She looks great though and actually has some lines and wrinkles so less of the expressionless puffiness of many older actors (male and female).

I love how she looks! She’s always well presented long or short hair. Never too old for anything.

I don’t suit short hair so I’ll be following the longer hair route as I age. Can’t even believe it’s still questioned.

It doesn’t suit her. Not because of age but she doesn’t have the face for it. I love long hair but sadly, I could never have it as it just looked awful. Some older women look fantastic with long hair-if it’s thick and fairly straight. Thin hair-which often happens as we age looks far better short as it looks straggly and unhealthy long-not a good look.

Where did the idea of short haircut on older people come from - I'm wondering is because it was fashionable in the 60s and maybe those women (who would now be in their 80s including my DM and MIL) stuck with it? Easier to manage? Dunno... As for Helen Mirren, her choice... but honestly I much prefer it shoulder length or shorter on her, whatever her age!

My friend is 60 and has very long hair almost to her waist but she still has really thick hair. She also has very streaky sort of dark blonde hair which though her skin tone has changed as it’s light really suits her. Many women myself included lose the fullness as we age which is why unlike my friend I cut off my very long hair.

Interesting discussion!

I am now giving more thought to my feelings about longer hair on 'older women'. I think I absorbed the idea that it was not 'suitable' as well, but now reflecting on this. (FWIW I am 50 and have long hair - but mainly because I am too lazy to get it cut. ).

Thinking about it there are certain elements about hair that I have absorbed (even if trying to rail against it- first time I got a perm my mother said perms were for sluts. Got hair cut short as a pixie and was told it makes me look like a butch lesbian. Yes intellecvtually this pissed me off but maybe I have absorbed an idea that older women should have short 'respectable' haircuts.

I need to give this all greater thought.

Both my grandmothers (born in the 1890s) had long hair into their 90s.

The difference was that they kept it in buns. When one went into a nursing home they cut it to make it easier to look after. She didn't look like herself at all.

I'm obsessed with long hair - probably because I have never been able to grow it (but I hate extensions, so that's a no go)
But no, I don't think it suits her at all. She would suit Jamie Lee Curtis' cut.
