I'm curious as I saw a pair of sports socks style socks on the BA&SH website with the perfect coloured stripes for trainers I have and I thought I'd buy them....but then I saw the price €35 for a single pair of socks so I backed away from the laptop.

However then I was reading a thread here about what coloured socks to wear with white shoes and there was link to a pair in around that same price..

And I followed a link on another thread about cashmere and there were socks on there for £350 per pair and they had to be specially ordered.

It's set me thinking and wondering if I'm missing out on a world of luxury socks?

I generally buy plain ones in M&S. I still want the first pair I saw though...

For me, £8 on Doc Martens socks. And I winced a bit. Normally I'm on Primark multi packs, or at a push, slightly fancier ones from TK Maxx.

But I did just spend £25 on compression socks as a gift for a keen runner.

£350 cashmere would be totally wasted on me - plus probably a complete pain to look after - handwash?

Galadriel90 · 06/03/2023 16:05

I'm a sock addict. I've quite a few pairs in the £20 region. Super cosy made in Britain wool ones.

pawz · 06/03/2023 16:06

£20-30 maybe? For good quality ones!

MrsAvocet · 06/03/2023 16:06

I've got walking and cycling socks that cost about £30 a pair but my normal socks are cheap multipacks from Adsa or somewhere like that. I don't think I would pay £350 for a pair of socks even if I won the lottery.

Crumpledstilstkin · 06/03/2023 16:09

Usually £20 for a nice specific pair like running or bed socks. I had to get medical compression rights during pregnancy at £50 a pop and nearly cried.

StiggyZardust · 06/03/2023 16:18

About £30 for a pair of wool and possum socks in New Zealand. The warmest socks ever.

Mercurial123 · 06/03/2023 16:22

I get winter socks from Izzy Lane. Quality is great, and the wool is from rescue sheep. Prices have increased to £25 recently.

I've bought some from Pairs Scotland for about £20 I think. Probably the most.

Oldraver · 06/03/2023 16:33

Not me but OH bought me a pair of Alpaca socks for £28 a few years ago. So beautiful

We generally buy Bridgedale or Darn Tough so anywhere from a tenner to just over £20

jay55 · 06/03/2023 16:35

I spent 29.95 on a pair of cashmere socks for my sister when chemo was giving her sores on her feet.

Anotherturnipforthebooks · 06/03/2023 16:35

£30 from Celtic and Co and they went to holes in a matter of weeks!

ImprobablePuffin · 06/03/2023 16:38

I've had similar sock based ponderings of recent as mine had become uncomfortable and rough feeling. I got a whole new load of bamboo socks (4x4 packs) priced at £8 each from sock shop and my tootsies have thanked me ever since.

(I then did the same thing with pants and my days are so much better now.)

NannyR · 06/03/2023 16:39

Probably around £20 for smartwool walking socks, they have lasted years and no blisters so a worthwhile investment. My everyday socks are just a multipack from the supermarket.

ImprobablePuffin · 06/03/2023 16:39

I lied it was 4x3 packs for £8

LadyKenya · 06/03/2023 16:44

The most that I have spent has been £8 on a pair of wool socks. I had a voucher for £20, and used that towards them, as they were £28.

GettingStuffed · 06/03/2023 16:47

About a fiver for a pair of of cashmere,/cotton mix in TKMaxx

Shinyandnew1 · 06/03/2023 16:51

Probably £8 a pair for socks from Bam or Thought, though I did buy DH hiking socks from Bridgedale and DS a pair of waterproof ones for camping-they were probably more like £15 a pair. I’d consider those ‘specialist’ equipment though, rather than everyday socks 😂

Suasthuasanuas · 06/03/2023 17:02

Boys socks from M&S are my everyday choice.
But I do have one pair of pure cashmere that I bought for cold nights for €50 that bring joy to my heart on a regular basis.

WashAsDelicates · 06/03/2023 17:07

Everyday socks are supermarket multipacks. Christmas stocking socks a bit more. Where I really spend on socks is wool. In this weather I live in my wool socks, so I'm willing to spend about £20 on a pair that will keep me warm outdoors and not be sweaty indoors. But never cashmere. Lovely as cashmere is, it's just not hard-wearing enough for socks.
Technical socks, such as for hiking and running are not cheap. Saving £10-£20 is not worth the blisters.

WinterMusings · 06/03/2023 17:19

A lot on specialist socks for skiiing & the like.

I like the idea of soft/light cashmere bed socks, but I can't sleep in socks. They'd be the up to £50 kind though, not the £350!!)

i have very small feet, so I can't wear ladies socks as I can't stand them floating around my feet. Most of mine are Tu (sainsbury) boys multipack with cars/trucks or the latest - 🦕. I live it when they have striped socks in.

would I pay £35 for a fashion pair to match my trainers? No. The rest of my 'look' wouldn't warrant it! But in previous decades yeah I would have (when I could).

if they make you happy, buy them. Treat them properly (don't go walking about outsude in them etc) wash them appropriately & enjoy them!!

EllaPaella · 06/03/2023 17:48

Ski socks- merino wool. Cost £26.

EllaPaella · 06/03/2023 17:49

I love Bam socks but have never had to buy them as they seem to send me a free pair every couple of months! I would actually pay for them as they are great quality but quite happy to keep getting my free pairs.

I do not own these and will not be buying them, but these cashmere socks are £270.

Netcam · 06/03/2023 18:11

I happily spend £15 on Smartwool socks, tend to get them in the sale rather than choose the ideal colour. But they are so comfy and last for years.

alwayscheery · 06/03/2023 18:13

£30 on hiking socks
£40 on skiing socks
£49.99 hunting/ shooting type socks ( I don't hunt but wear them with Penelope Chilvers boots)
I am told the bam socks are great.
