Skinny jeans

I'm 49, size 10 and I think 🤔 reasonably fashionable but certainly not a trend setter! I like my skinny jeans either with boots, trainers or in the better weather turned up at ankle with sandals. However, my 17 year old niece has "advised" me that they are no longer fashionable, however she wasn't forthcoming in telling me what is 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️. So, what is the new style of jeans or are you all still rocking skinnies?! Px

Still wearing. I think in the same category as black legs they have become a fashion staple in that although never “trendy” look absolutely fine and nice.

Angrymum22 · 19/02/2023 20:37

Flares are back in apparently.

ImSorryThatWasJustANoise · 19/02/2023 20:37

I haven't got any new skinny jeans. I am wearing bootleg/skinny flares and slim fit turned up. However I've worn some old black skinny jeans to walk in today and I'm undersided if to buy some new black ones as they are flattering

Flares are back in apparently.

I have a pair of medium blue denim skinny flares that I love.

crabette · 19/02/2023 20:42

I've just bought a pair of high waist wide leg black jeans for this reason!

They’re definitely not “fashionable,” but they’re also not so unfashionable that they stand out terribly. Loads of people still wear them in central London, including young people (though they do skew older).

As for what jeans are fashionable, wide leg and bootcut are popular, especially among the younger crowd, but straight cut and “mom jeans” are everywhere too. That’s probably why your niece couldn’t specify what’s fashionable, because it’s a bit of everything really.

It seems like the length is more significant than the cut at the moment. You want ankle-grazers or properly long jeans which cover most of your shoe, not a blah in-between length.

I love skinny stretchy high-rise jeggings, or fleecy lined seamless stretchy black leggings. I’m 66, it’s all about comfort, sod fashion. I wear trainers or Converse, Birkenstocks, Uggs… Crocs to go out to the washing line… Muck Boot Company wellies. All fine with jeggings or leggings in my little world!

Bootcut or straight-leg jeans don’t fit in wellies.

YourWinter · 19/02/2023 20:50

As a teenager in the early ‘70s, with biker boyfriends, I wore Levi’s hipster jeans with 26” flares, and black Cuban-heeled skinny long zip-up boots under them!

Chasedbythechaser · 19/02/2023 20:52

I'm wearing and prefer wide legs but..... they are not as practical as skinny jeans. I ended up buying a pair of skinny jeans recently just to wear with longer knit jumpers and boots/brogues and socks.

Tgif2023 · 19/02/2023 21:00

Wider legged jeans definitely more "in" but I find this hard to pull off in winter. I am still wearing my M&S skinnies since they fit nicely beneath my biker boots. Once the weather is nicer I will be back to my flared high waisted jeans. Just a personal preference thing (if I wear flats with the wider legged jeans they are a bit too long). I could wear heeled boots in winter with flared ones but heeled boots hurt my feet.

lljkk · 19/02/2023 21:00

Wear what you know looks good on you, OP. It took > 10 years for skinnies to come back after last time they went out, so buy up spares if you know skinnies suit you best, to wait out the long drought period.

Calphurnia88 · 19/02/2023 21:05

When I was pregnant I lived in (maternity) skinny jeans as these were by far the most flattering fit on me. I couldn't have given less of a hoot that they weren't fashionable and I've carried this attitude across post partum.

That said, I love jeans so have an array of styles. The more fashionable pairs are straight leg, wide leg, mom and flares. Straight leg are probably the easiest to wear and the closest to skinnies. Mango is my go to for high street denim.

Mumof1andacat · 19/02/2023 21:18

If that's what you like wearing, you are comfortable in and if you like how look in them, then continue to wear them.

Bobbybobbins · 19/02/2023 21:21

Agree that wide legs and mom jeans are more 'in' but they are a pita in winter

MyCatIsAnnoyinglyCute · 19/02/2023 21:24

I wear ‘Mom’ jeans or those fleece lined leggings from Primark with DM boots or trainers.

FinallyHere · 19/02/2023 21:27

It's all about the high waisted leather look for me this season

Matildahoney · 19/02/2023 21:29

Skinnies and flares are the only jeans that suit me. I'd prefer to wear what suits my shape rather than what's deemed to be in fashion.

TheOGCCL · 19/02/2023 22:49

Compared to what women in their forties and fifties were wearing forty years ago, skinnies are still pretty cool and always get that balance between insouciance and comfort. I'm not sure I want to look like seventeen year old girls, many of whom are swathed in baggy fabric (London). The fashion has just gone looser so try skinnies with oversized tops and jumpers or jeans with a slightly looser leg.

HarryBlaster · 20/02/2023 09:26

It’s the Mom Jean. Not always been a fan but as they’ve got more popular they seem less shapeless now. H&M do some nice slim ones that don’t look frumpy. I also got a decent pair in M&S.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/02/2023 09:34

Skinny jeans have been out of fashion so long they will be coming around again soon. Meanwhile, Non Fashion People have been happily wearing them all along with no ill effects, so don't worry about it.

TheDead · 20/02/2023 09:48

OP I'm early 50's and I stopped wearing jeans at all in around 2019. I went off skinny jeans then and found I was enjoying wearing other trousers far more.
However I recently bought some very nice COS wide legged jeans and I am also researching lovely straight leg jeans too.

I also have a pair of flared Sezane dark blue jeans which were too tight when I bought them but I have lost weight recently and am almost into them.

As someone else said leg length is key. My COS ones are slightly cropped and I am currently wearing them with black leather laced Asha ankle boots from Whistles and in warner weather I will wear with birkenstocks

The straight legged ones I will wear turned up with trainers (new balance) and birkenstocks depending on the weather

The Sezane flares are really long (which I love as I am 5ft 9") and I'm still considering options for them at the moment

MrsRinaDecker · 20/02/2023 09:56

I really like the Molly jeans from river island, they’re skinny but super soft and comfortable. I think skinnies + tighter top does look slightly dated now, but I still like them with a looser jumper or t shirt and slouchy cardigan.

HeadNorth · 20/02/2023 10:00

I have some flares, which I wear in Spring & Summer, but they are not as practical in winter. My current compromise is straight leg jeans rolled up to sit above my ankle boots - as practical as skinnies but a less dated look.

CeriB82 · 20/02/2023 10:04

A 17 yr old telling you what is fashionable? Whilst they all wear ugly oversized jumpers and trying to look like a kardashian?

im 48 and live in skinny jeans. I gave a good pair of legs and arse i i look good in them.

keep wearing them!

JackGrealishsLegs · 20/02/2023 10:06

If you like skinnies but want to move on, try a slim straight leg. No need to go to the other end of the jeans spectrum with baggy denim or flares.
