Skinny jeans

I'm 49, size 10 and I think 🤔 reasonably fashionable but certainly not a trend setter! I like my skinny jeans either with boots, trainers or in the better weather turned up at ankle with sandals. However, my 17 year old niece has "advised" me that they are no longer fashionable, however she wasn't forthcoming in telling me what is 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️. So, what is the new style of jeans or are you all still rocking skinnies?! Px

Still wearing mine. 👍

Nannyfannybanny · 20/02/2023 10:17

I'm 72, I pretty much live in M &S jeggins. Bought 4 pairs different colours, size 10, regular length,5ft 1in, but long legs, short body. Have a couple of pairs of "straights". My size and height, baggy,/flared look like a kid dressing up in mummys clothes. Apart from the fact...I did that in the 70s. My 13 year old DGD pinches my clothes... not these, they're too big for her.

Skinny jeans have been out of fashion so long they will be coming around again soon. Meanwhile, Non Fashion People have been happily wearing them all along with no ill effects, so don't worry about it.

That isn’t what the OP asked….

TooSmallForTheMembrane · 20/02/2023 10:22

Skinnies are done IMO which is great because I can wear comfortable trousers now 😂

I like paperbag waist mom jeans or anything high waisted with a flare/wide leg. I can’t be doing with low rise (which is back in) because I’m not 17 with a flat tummy anymore. I’m 30 with a wobbly c-section shelf and I’d rather it stayed tucked in!

EllaPaella · 20/02/2023 10:23

I'm 43 and still wearing skinnies in winter. No other jean lends itself so well for wearing with boots imo.
I have virtually all styles of jeans though and love and embrace them all. In summer I like a barrel leg or cropped straight leg. I'm also wearing wide leg jeans this winter and have always loved my boyfriend jeans.

OP I'm early 50's and I stopped wearing jeans at all in around 2019. I went off skinny jeans then and found I was enjoying wearing other trousers far more.
However I recently bought some very nice COS wide legged jeans and I am also researching lovely straight leg jeans too.

I also have a pair of flared Sezane dark blue jeans which were too tight when I bought them but I have lost weight recently and am almost into them.

As someone else said leg length is key. My COS ones are slightly cropped and I am currently wearing them with black leather laced Asha ankle boots from Whistles and in warner weather I will wear with birkenstocks

The straight legged ones I will wear turned up with trainers (new balance) and birkenstocks depending on the weather

The Sezane flares are really long (which I love as I am 5ft 9") and I'm still considering options for them at the moment

Can you say which straight leg you wear please?

This is a look I really like. I recently bought Cos straight leg but my calves are so big, they look like skinny jeans on me :-( I kept them as I needed jeans but I’d prefer them to look looser.

Yarrawonga · 20/02/2023 10:36

I’m a “non fashion” person and am still wearing mine, they suit my shape. I’ve only ever worn them with boots. I also wear bootcut, with trainers.

I swear by Mango straight leg jeans.

I have bigger calves compared to my thighs, and these fit exactly how I want them to.

Thank you. I will look there!

TheDead · 20/02/2023 10:56

@Chasedbythechaser I haven't bought mine yet, as I'm looking for the perfect pair. ME+EM have a really nice pair but they're £££ but I'm contemplating them as going forwards I have resolved to not buy any more 'they'll do' item and only buy 'perfect for me' even if it means saving and wating a while for them

I'll def check out that mango recommendation though, thanks!

Pureradio · 21/02/2023 18:50

I love my skinny jeans, tried to go more flared but just feels too odd

ImSorryThatWasJustANoise · 21/02/2023 20:30

I'm enjoying wearing bootleg/skinny flares & slim fit. I just stuck to skinny jeans for years.

Nicely patronising.

Pigtailsandall · 21/02/2023 21:35

Excuse me for saying this, but the proportion of people saying skinny jeans suit them best just can't be right (not in this conversation but generally). Skinny jeans show literally every bump and lump, and with the current fashion favouring cropped and tighter tops, it's not always a flattering look. IMO skinny jeans are some of the hardest to wear unless you are, well, skinny. They are certainly comfortable because of the amount of elasticity they contain, so they feel less structured that 100% cotton jeans and that's probably part of their charm, and the reason people favour them. Personally, I look like a parsnip so I've never warmed to them.

Op, if you want to look a bit more current, how about high-waisted tapered jeans? They have that elongating high waist and are relaxed around the thighs but won't billow around in the cold weather like wide legs. Or something more fitted like Levi's classic 501s which are fitted around hips but straight on the leg. I tried them on for the first time since 1998 and was amazed how flattering they were. Can't believe I'd forgotten.

And yes, cropped with a chelsea boot/DM/Hi-top trainer or long with a basic flat trainer/shoe. I've also experimented with rolling crops up a bit higher to reveal a funky sock.

ImSorryThatWasJustANoise · 22/02/2023 10:02

I have nice legs, my stomach is chubby and I have big boobs - so top heavy.

When I wore skinny jeans all the time it was with shirts, jumpers & non tight tops. I don't think I've worn a crop top since I was 21 years old (a few years ago).

I do think bootleg and skinny flares are flattering on my body shape.

MorrisZapp · 22/02/2023 10:12

Don't think many MNers are wearing crop tops in winter 🤣

I wear skinnies all winter then loosen it up a bit in summer. The shops have pretty much everything in stock - mom, flare, baggy, skinny. There's definitely much more choice and less of a required denim uniform.

Mango, H&M, Zara etc all still stock huge piles of skinny jeans so I don't think we can declare them over yet.

AuntieStella · 22/02/2023 10:45

I'm staying with skinnies.

They're easily the shape that suits me best.

Fashion is fickle, style is more constant.

I wear cropped jumpers. Any top can be crisper, it doesn't have to ne a vest. With those, a wide leg or straight leg looks better and (to me) more flattering.

Agree that skinny jeans with loose shirts etc can be a good look, but I'm not a fan of the stretchiness of them.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 22/02/2023 12:47

I stick with high waisted skinny Dark wash jeans( from Hollister of all places!) as they suit my short legs
I wear with a tummy covering blouse these days I'm 58

Pigtailsandall · 22/02/2023 13:19

Gah apologies for typos. I meant to say, Any top can be cropped. I particularly like some of the shorter ones from &Other stories, but with skinny jeans I look bulkier in the middle than I am

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 22/02/2023 13:30

A lot of people wearing wide leg jeans or trousers don't look good, and prove that it's better to wear what suits you rather than follow trends. I personally don't like skin tight skinnies or jeggings but won't stop wearing my normal fit skinnies or slim fit, because they suit me much better.

I have the big claf problem too. Straights look like skinnies on me. However I quite like Harper from M and S (rolled up) and a pair from Hush (Agnes)? which are also worn rolled up (no stretch tho..) 🤔

Yarrawonga · 22/02/2023 15:27

Personally, I look like a parsnip so I've never warmed to them.

That’s why I only wear skinnies with boots. I think they help balance out any parsnip resemblances.

Although I dare say many would be seen dead in skinnies and boots, especially heeled boots.

For those with wider calves Levi straight legs are definitely worth a try.
