Those prices are bonkers for essentially second hand clothes.

This! Ridiculous prices and quite frankly taking the p*ss, excuse my language.
Do someone has sent in a second hand item, they've repaired it and they are asking people to pay those prices for max profit!
Out of principle, I would not buy.

MiracleToast · 15/02/2023 20:55

Did they have moths in the stockroom or something? Very odd - huge prices...

Snowyowl78 · 15/02/2023 21:29

I took it to mean someone had ordered something and when they got it it was damaged and so they returned it? Or do you think they are actually second hand?

dudsville · 15/02/2023 21:33

I thought that too @MiracleToast .

Also, these are single/individual items, right? One offs? How does that work on a site like Toast? Maybe the fact that they're doing this is one of the lesser known precursors to the proper dystopian future, where the toast mended items can be traded for food. Mushroom based food of course.

Even still, To inflate the price to even higher for a damaged product is lunacy. It is damaged and therefore not perfect [ and has a weakness] even after a repair. The prices should be cheaper.

faustina · 15/02/2023 21:47

@Stoic123 - I wasn't having a go at you - promise! What a rip off though! I love the idea of mending so beautifully and someone else loving something - but it feels like they're treating us like fools - just like harry enfield except that was comedy

neveradullmoment99 · 15/02/2023 21:47

Baukjen have items that are second hand. I thought they might have done something along those lines. Think fatface do it too. A bit like Toast Circle but online.

Agree.

Snowyowl78 · 15/02/2023 21:48

@neveradullmoment99 yeah I agree and it suggests you shouldn’t wash them normally either.
I got the Sketch Leaf Dress for £70 I think in the sale and fact is if it ripped now I could get a nice repair for free!

faustina · 15/02/2023 21:50

Cos are doing it too ( re-selling) - it's a very good idea!

Trinitybean · 15/02/2023 22:09

This is hilarious and ingenious, I think I'll get sewing in a fancy pattern over holes. I've got some wool trousers that a hole appeared in shortly after buying.

dudsville · 16/02/2023 07:29

I just checked COS. They're doing it like an ebay/vinted sort of thing from what i saw, not trying to sell either used or damaged things as new works of art. I wonder how this will go!

I wouldn't have that much of a problem with it if the prices were much cheaper to reflect they are repairs! To inflate prices like that, with the fake narrative that they are more individual is more likely to annoy people and turn them off from Toast.
In reality, they are repairs. Like a reconditioned electrical device. Who would pay more for that?
It makes them look money grabbing and not the environmentally friendly brand that they want to be. Profit comes first!

Countmeout · 16/02/2023 08:49

It’ll be interesting to see their video next Thursday about these pieces. It may shed light on their thinking.
I imagine they see it as elevating the pieces and thus justifying the new price. Some people may buy into the originality and individuality of the piece it has become.

It’s definitely made me rethink my opinion of Toast, I just cannot understand the prices - particularly the sketched leaf dress that I bought in the sale as well.
It will be interesting to see how this works out for them, surely they’ve done some research to look at the market for 'repaired' items.

Stravaig · 16/02/2023 09:08

Like everyone else, I am flabbergasted at the Renewed prices! Especially as some of their customers will have been repairing clothes our entire lives, often with creative wonkyness, so are not overly impressed.

Remember the velvet flat-fronts? I had them in deep navy and chocolate brown. I did what I always do, I didn't bother tying or tucking the chain side leg before getting on my bike, and ripped the chocolate ones near the hem on the very first wear. I was rushing to pack before heading to the airport for a training event. I took a single strand each of red and pink embroidery thread, best options handy, and did a quick cross-stitch across the rip, frayed edges still peeking out.

I had as many comments on that 'feature repair' as I did on the boots I was wearing (those Spanish riding boots with scalloped placket over the zip which were popular at the time). That was twenty years ago, and the repair took all of 10 minutes as I scrambled out the door.

FFS Toast. You haven't invented mending, nor creative patching and embroidery to embellish repairs. Get a grip.

neveradullmoment99 · 16/02/2023 09:09

So damaged returned items and unworn stock, so a mixture

On we go Toasties heading for Spring???

100% agree! Hope you are reading this Toast!😒

faustina · 16/02/2023 12:33

the idea itself isn't a bad one - if they did that and auctioned the pieces and donated the profits to Turkey/Syria or something - as some other brands are doing. Or if they did something like Cos where we could resell our preloved Toast (there would be a huge market for that!) - all of that would be fine. It's just the way they are doing it makes me feel like they're playing us

A long time ago they used to just give all their deadstock to TKMaxx which was excellent as you can imagine!

Snowyowl78 · 16/02/2023 12:46

Wow TK Maxx imagine!

I think actually they are around the original price some of them - eg the Loopback sweatshirt from memory I think that was £95 full price and now it is £90. The repair is so minor on that one I don’t think they could possibly ask for more.

Alix slate were £175 full price and here they are £180. I do like the repairs on these but I wouldn’t be tempted because the Alix Slate went into the sale at £85. Same for the Sketch Leaf dress!

I like the repair on the cashmere trousers very much and for that one I do feel it’s enhanced, but again not tempted by £290. I don’t know what they are full price but I’m going to guess a similar price?!

Snowyowl78 · 16/02/2023 12:48

Also- why aren’t they being advertised properly? They are a bit hidden like when we have to sleuth for the sale.

dudsville · 16/02/2023 13:35

Well put @Stravaig !

In other news, the red gingham trousers are sold out! It's not interesting, it's just that I'm kind of surprised.

neveradullmoment99 · 16/02/2023 13:57

I got the red gingham trousers yesterday. They were in stock in a few sizes this morning. I ordered the medium [ Am a 14 in real life] I feel they are still quite big so did order the small to compare and they should arrive tomorrow.
They are really lovely. The medium felt a bit too dropped crotch for me and a bit annoying with feeling of the seam lower which I know from Toast jumpsuits can really annoy me, so we will see if the small are better. They may be too tight!!!

Fedupofthis78 · 16/02/2023 14:30

I’ve just bought the crinkle neck dress as a treat to myself for losing a stone. What would you style it with? I’m 5’9’’ and fitted in the large.

dudsville · 16/02/2023 14:41

How exciting @neveradullmoment99 , must have been a very temporary stock issue! I would love to see how you style them!

What a great gift @Fedupofthis78 !
