Once you're 50+, nothing really works for anti ageing, other than a face lift. You can improve your skin for sure but you will never look younger. You simply cannot fake youth.

ChiefPearlClutcher · 01/01/2023 01:57

Good genes
no smoking
SPF
HRT (look up how much collagen you lose during/after meno, nothing you put ON your skin can make up for that)
acid tone and moisturise

Agree with all of these apart from acid tone and moisturise, which I have never heard of!

I tried retinol cream (Boots No. 7) and was hideously allergic to it, even though I followed the instructions to the letter.

FartWrangler · 02/01/2023 08:46

I would also add 'don't wear make up', as it makes people look older. But there's very little you can do that actually makes you look younger. However, there are things that definitely make you look older - smoking and sunbathing/sunbeds come to mind.

ThePoshUns · 02/01/2023 08:54

Morning
Facial wash gel - any brand
Q&A peptide serum
Upcircle caffeine eye cream
Ebrorian cc cream

Evening
Micellar water
Q&A super greens facial oil

Weekly
Magnitone lift off micro current device

Would also recommend tailored skin care by dermatica - the first month is £2.90 for a personalised skin care routine.

Cleanse skin- I have favourites but agree with Nadine Baggott that anything that goes down the plughole doesn't need to be spendy and doesn't sit on your skin long enough to do anything other than clean it, so any other promises are a con.
Hydrate skin-
Spf50

Tret three times a week.
Vitamin C in the morning.

The Vitamin C has probably made the biggest difference of all, but I appreciate that the tret/vit A is a long game. I used various retinols for a couple of years first. I'm 57 and my skin looks good for my age. I know it does. Does it look like 30 year old skin? No.

To anyone looking at Dermatica/Skin and Me. Note that some posters are "forgetting" to tell you they get a cut if you click on their link.

That's how all referral codes work. It isn't a cut, it's just some credit towards an existing subscription.

You look great @Wagsandclaws !

I see much said about Hyaluronic Acid? I've got a big birthday coming up and may treat myself to good skincare. At the moment, I'm relying on good genetics (Thanks Dad!) but I need to get sorted.

Almost every serum/moisturiser on the market has hyaluronic acid in it, and it's a cheap ingredient so don't feel you need an expensive hyaluronic product. Some people can get away with just using a HA serum and no moisturiser. It is just a very good product for moisture though the industry jury is still out on whether applied topically it does that much. It was felt until very recently also that it needed to be applied to damp skin as it attracts moisture from its surroundings, but just before Christmas something was published (possibly by labmuffin- very good beauty /science thereof writer) about the latest research showing that that's not actually the case.
Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair was one of the first HA based serums though formulated before the days when individual ingredients became buzzwords.

Yes. I was just saying that while some posters on this thread have said "use my referral code and I get X", others have forgotten to do so.

Does anyone know of any anti ageing oils that are any good for dry skin?

The best oils for dry skin are the richer ones- avocado etc. These could however, also block your pores more.
Neal's Yard do some very good facial oils and though expensive to begin with last ages. Rose is good, as is frankincense. Clarins Blue Orchid likewise.
Rosehip became a huge buzzword some years ago, but is indicated for less mature and less dry skin and for the first signs of ageing.

If your skin is really dry then La Roche Posay do a moisturiser called Riche Creme, Weleda Skin Food is also good.

I don't think make up makes people look older unless they choose the wrong types. You definitely need to change your products when you get older.

Very heavy foundation etc often sits in fine lines accentuating them but the correct make up can really enhance someone's face not make them look older.

Sunblock everyday
healthy living.
No fags or booze.

This.

I spent quite a lot on vit c, retinol, and so on, stopped using I and have noticed bog all difference. I am almost 50.

That’s interesting. I look at it the other way around. You can have a face lift but it won’t improve the quality of you skin. You will still have your age skin.

Thighlengthboots · 02/01/2023 09:36

The gold standard for anti ageing is (excluding cosmetic procedures):

  1. High spf (50 all year round)
  2. Some form of retinoid or Tretinoin (you MUST use spf if using this, even in winter)
  3. Vitamin C serum (skinceuticals is good)

Aside from that, drink 2L of water a day and dont smoke or drink as both are horribly ageing and cause loss of collagen. Exercise and eat lots of oily fish.

That's not looking at it the other way round. That's literally what I said.

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 02/01/2023 10:02

I'm similar to many others here: vitamin C, SPF50, tret. Plus gentle cleansing and a lot of moisturising. An illuminating tinted moisturiser is the heaviest makeup I'll wear.

I'm not going to pretend I look 10 years younger but people comment on my skin a LOT, so I'll keep doing what I'm doing.

Farmageddon · 02/01/2023 11:19

Youarethesun · 01/01/2023 17:06

This might be a daft question. But how to you reapply during the day if you make up on?

I don't reapply properly during the day, but I do have a finishing powder that has SPF in it.
The way I see it, something is better than nothing when it comes to sunscreen, so cumulatively it will help. But I also have to be realistic - I'm not going to wash my face and put a load more sunscreen on during the day, I couldn't be bothered. So I slather on my SPF 50 in the morning, and use the powder during the day.
In the summer when I'm out in the sun more, I use a specific powder sunscreen to top up during the day. Again, not a perfect solution, but does me fine.

NameIsBryceQuinlan · 02/01/2023 11:30

I reapply whenever I'm going to go out. I just wear a cc cream so it doesn't ruin anything. If you go on YouTube Susan yara or casandra bankson have videos showing how to reapply over makeup

What SPF product fo you use?

Speedmacarons · 02/01/2023 12:30

@Girlintheframe what make up do you recommend for not settling into lines etc?

RosesAndHellebores · 02/01/2023 12:40

I wear make-up daily with an spf of 15
Foundation, concealer (dark circles), blusher, dust of translucent powder, Mascara, lipstick.

Comes off at night with soap and water followed by a No7 3in1 wipe. Never remember to moisturise.

I have a couple of glasses of water every day and am about a stone overweight.

My skin has always been clear, neither oily nor dry, never had spots. At 62 I have very few wrinkles.

I think it's a combination of genetics and happiness and not much else can influence it.

RosesAndHellebores · 02/01/2023 12:41

A couple of glasses of wine - not water.

HelloBunny · 02/01/2023 12:44

I use any face products. Most are good. Or coconut oil. Don’t wear any make-up or smoke / drink. Walk everywhere. Keep weight fairly stable. I look decent enough. Starting to get jowly though... I’m 46.

Moonpies · 02/01/2023 13:01

SPF every day, no smoking, fresh air/ walks daily as well
Plenty of water, and try to eat healthy (most of times at least)
Vitamin C serum in the morning. hydrochloric acid serum with microcurrent device and also use LED mask
Good genes or luck, I have skin worries but never had acne for example
