Ahh if you're very dry go easy with Tret as it does make you dry.
Have you ever tried doing a layer of vaseline over your moisturiser before bed?

I'm a big fan of this

Really? This sounds totally alien to me - wouldn’t it be incredibly greasy?

genuine question, not trying to be snarky.

Wagsandclaws · 01/01/2023 01:52

I used to use dermatica but even after using it for six months my skin still
Itched and peeled sometimes.

I've traded the retinol for bioeffect egf serum and I'm blown away by how good it is ( spendy though).

In the morning I: cleanse with micellar water. Use Ren toner or a similar acid based toner.
Use egf serum over my face and neck, allow that to sink in then finish with Sunday Reily ceo vit cc cream. I also use perriconemd neck cream.

I Then follow about 20 mins later with heliocare age prevent 50 spf.

Evenings are much the same but I use the Micellar water to take off eye makeup and double cleanse with a cleansing milk. I really can't recommend egf serum enough. It's Icelandic so can be bought worldwide.

I'm 51 at the end of this month and my skin has never, ever looked this nice - makeup goes on like a dream ( attached pic - with light makeup on but skin is just so glowy now Smile).

Good genes
no smoking
SPF
HRT (look up how much collagen you lose during/after meno, nothing you put ON your skin can make up for that)
acid tone and moisturise

BastardtheCat · 01/01/2023 05:51

You look great @Wagsandclaws !

I see much said about Hyaluronic Acid? I've got a big birthday coming up and may treat myself to good skincare. At the moment, I'm relying on good genetics (Thanks Dad!) but I need to get sorted.

Tretinoin question: does it have any downsides or side effects? Just the amount it is mentioned on these threads makes it sound like a wonder product yet I haven’t heard of it before the last few months!

I have skin that is prone to being very dry and can be quite dull. Early thirties. I’ve never had to really think about my skin, never got spots or anything, but it’s taken a battering the last few years with pollution and baby related sleep deprivation…

Yes, for some people in the first few weeks skin can peel/flake.

You have to wear a high factor spf all the time, so 5ml of spf50 in the morning and reapplied properly throughout the day. Too many people think putting a small amount on once a day is sufficient, unless you use spf properly there is no point using tret.

FelicityFlops · 01/01/2023 06:59

I am 64, but was told this morning by someone, who is 52 that she thought I was the same age as she is 😁
Apart from the fact that I seem to have inherited most of the good genes, I eat a very healthy diet, drink lots of water and get enough sleep. I almost never wear make-up (last time was November 2018). I am a normal weight for my height and shape. I like to swim for exercise.
I use Venn face wash, goes onto dry skin, gets foamed up in the shower and rinsed off, followed by Venn Age-Reverse all-in-one concentrate and that is it.
Twice a year or so I have a spot of Botox and some hyuralonic filler on my chin, but minimal amounts of both. I started when I was 50.
I just look like myself, but fresher, if you know what I mean. I think it helps that I don't have m(any) visible grey hairs. I have highlights about once a quarter. The colours are ones already present in my hair.
Very rarely look at myself in the mirror close up, unless removing the inevitable stray chin hairs or tidying eyebrows, which are very dark and much darker than my hair!

@RandomCatGenerator

I use vaseline most nights. Lots of dermatologists recommend it actually. I do my face an hour or two before I sleep. I always look a bit glazed donut for a few minutes then it all absorbs and my skin is glowy. I don't wear foundation anymore as I don't need it. I understand the idea of vaseline isn't for everyone but works for me.

Ah ha, hour or two before you sleep - that makes sense. I thought you meant just before getting into bed and wondered about it just transferring right onto the pillows. Thank you. I may give that a go!

NameIsBryceQuinlan · 01/01/2023 08:04

You can do a very thin layer and see how you go. If vaseline is a step too far try the ordinary squalene oil. I used to find that hydrating.

Hernamewaslola1 · 01/01/2023 08:06

Morning - vitamin C serum (I use drunk elephant - have been for about 5 years I think) and their orange eye cream then SPF. I don't use anything at night. If you have dry skin, there is an Australian brand called Face Hero and they have this little oil in a peach coloured bottle (all natural) and I'm sure they ship to the UK cheaper now than when I first started using them, it has the best mixture of oils and smells lovely (also non comedogenic). Perfect for dry skin which I suffer from in the winter

Railwayroad · 01/01/2023 08:10

I have great skin despite not doing much to it. Unfortunately ageing means sagging around the jowls is occurring. No cream can combat gravity sadly.

Girlintheframe · 01/01/2023 09:09

It has to be a multi faceted approach I think

Good skincare - vit C, tret, regular exfoliation, losts of moisturizing products and spf

Morning - medik8 press and glow, medik
8 vit c, hylauronic acid, corsx snail mucus, moisturize, spf

Evening - double cleanse, press and glow, Corsx, moisturizer, face oil

This is my routine for winter as my skin is very dry at the moment and needs the extra hydration. I've got tret but won't start it until my skin is less dry.

Lifestyle - sleep! Sleep! More sleep! Good diet, hydration, body weight, exercise and more sleep.

Honestly though I think the majority of the reason why my skin is good is genetic. I get Botox too, twice a year. It definitely helps me look fresher. I only get a little as want as natural a look as possible. I look like a less tired/fresher version of me.

I'm in the EU and those subscription services won't send tretinoin. What's the next best thing?

Order Retirides online from Andorra.

Eatentoomanyroses · 01/01/2023 14:17

mines hit and miss depending on how tired I am. At the moment at night it’s cleanse and then use Estée Lauder ANR followed by moisturiser, retinol eye cream, followed by moisturising eye cream some nights, other nights it’s cleanse followed by tret ( I use the obagi tret) followed by my eye creams. Am it’s cleanse, followed by ANR, then moisturiser, eye gel, and then my makeup.

wannarunfromitall · 01/01/2023 14:35

SPF50 every day and as much sleep as I can get.

I use La Roche Posay but it's a bit on the pricy side so I'll look at the Bondi Sands one mentioned above.

I like Nivea blue pot slathered on for overnight, similar to the Vaseline trick but nicer.

RandomCatGenerator · 01/01/2023 15:26

On spf - what you you use? I tend to use moisturiser with spf in it - is this not sufficient?

Are you putting a teaspoon/5ml on and re-applying?

Yeah I’d say I put a teaspoon on in the morning and evening. Maybe once through the day.

Youarethesun · 01/01/2023 17:06

This might be a daft question. But how to you reapply during the day if you make up on?

This is what I wondered too!

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/01/2023 18:10

If you use mineral sunblock it doesn’t degrade and you don’t need to.

VladmirsPoutine · 01/01/2023 18:23

@RandomCatGenerator Vaseline works very effectively as an occlusive so it's not completely ridiculous but that said it depends on your type of skin because vaseline for some can lead to a break out for the purposes of keeping dry skin soft it does work.

NCSQ · 01/01/2023 21:10

I'm a firm believer that there's no such thing as anti aging. What I do is try to keep my skin in the best possible condition.

@GettingStuffed thats's a good philosophy. I'm going to adopt it.

Youarethesun · 01/01/2023 17:06

You can buy spray spf that is specifically designed for over the top of make up. I use the garnier one to top up during the day

I've always been told to use a separate moisturizer and spf as otherwise you aren't getting the correct amount of protection.
