Wearing an unflattering outfit to a party

I'm having a total nightmare trying to find a dress for a party in a couple of weeks. It's a dressy ish event so I wanted to go with a long dress but my hips are so enormous that they all look stupid.

I found a dress that looks nice enough but people have told me it pretty much looks awful but I'm tempted to wear it anyway. It is appropriate and it's comfy!

Pic attached of the offending dress. I look better in a super short dress because they make me look taller but they aren't appropriate so there we go.

I've tried on so many now and none of them look wow and it's just making me more and more miserable that I'm such an enormous lump so I give up. I'm either wearing this or not going.

I think you look good. The fact is, you are very curvy from the waist down and it's not something that needs to be hidden!?

This is the conclusion I've come to. Yes it makes me look a bit wide and a bit unbalanced but that's me! It feels comfortable, it can be glammed up and it looks nice, maybe not the best but it's not expensive so if I never wear it again no big deal.

I really like the dress on you, OP, and actually think the only problem is that it's a little too long. Have you tried tucking it under slightly, maybe 4-6 inches, to see how it would look if it was hemmed a bit. Also, in all honesty, I don't think the shoes with the straps across the ankle are helping you love it.

Could you tuck it up slightly and try with different shoes?

Like this? Don't know what I'm doing with my arm 😂 I need shoes with straps otherwise they don't stay on my feet and I need heels. Otherwise shoe wise I'm open to suggestions, I don't own anything suitable.

I think you've got a lovely figure. My favourites are dress 2 and dress 3.

I have 'hip dips' and they were the bane of my life until I decided I cba trying to conceal the way I'm built anymore. Life's too short for horribly restrictive underwear. 🤣

minipie · 28/12/2022 18:36

Ah I’m like you OP. Short and tiny torso but large bum and thighs - so a size 6/8 in the right style dress but often up to a 10 in trousers.

For my shape (and therefore probably yours) I find skater style dresses are perfect but there are not really any in the shops right now. Jumpsuits can be good if the waist is high and the legs loose - always need taking up but so be it. Full on maxi length can also look great if the skirt is the right shape (slim waist to hip and then flaring out is best). Anything midi is awful.

Of what you have already, I think the velvet playsuit with tights and sparkly shoes sounds really good. Sparkly necklace and/or long sparkly earrings to glam it up. Gold and black short dress is the next best. I’m afraid I don’t think the first dress is flattering at all, the narrow set straps make your shoulders appear narrower and the ruching makes your bottom half larger.

Can we see the playsuit?

This one, tucked up to this length

faffadoodledo · 28/12/2022 18:39

Go for shoes with an ankle strap. IME they elongate legs. Not literally!

minipie · 28/12/2022 18:39

The boohoo dress linked to above would suit you, this one would too. Fit and flare shape.

Ahh the dreaded hip dips. Yep bane of my life too.

I've made my decision and I'm going to stick to it, I might get the black one taken up a bit or not depending how much it is.

I look presentable and nobody is really going to pay any attention to what I'm wearing, it's not my wedding day.

Thanks for your help people, much appreciated even if I haven't gone with any of your suggestions but it's helped me hash everything out and try to accept me for me 😊

The second dress looks good and you suit it.
First dress is not flattering in the least.

Meh. I'm honestly past caring now, it could be a lot worse and indeed people have gone out in a lot worse. I'm tired of trying on dresses, tired of ordering and sending back. Tired of picking myself apart over and over to conform to certain beauty standards.

Thanks though 👍

I think the first dress is a great choice.

I am used to a small waist and big hips/bum being very much a positive though and something to show off and enhance, not hide.

Thats your body shape, and it’s lovely you are embracing it

Yes, exactly! I love it on you at this length. How do you feel about it?

I feel like it makes me look about 60 but I do see where you are coming from.

When you lifted up the first dress in your last picture so it's knee length that changed everything and it looks SO much better at knee length with the silver sandals.

Well I mean it is being embraced at the minute isn't it, so many people are photoshopping hips and bums in. Don't really understand but several people have told me they love my bum because of it's roundness and they think theirs is too flat. It's probably the classic we want what we don't have isn't it.

Going to sound like I'm stuck on this, but I think it's the shoes that are giving you the 60 vibe. I know these are out of budget, but something more like one of these?

Honestly, people are getting surgery to look like you do naturally, padded bums and padded hips are also very common.

The grass is always greener, people always want what they don’t have I think.

I also agree the first dress looks even better took up.

Yes they are far too expensive but from the brief browse they look ok. I don't mind what shoe I wear providing it has heels and something to make them stay on my feet. Court shoes and slingbacks don't work with my flat feet.

I agree with everything @done4now has posted, the dress is much better in the shorter length. The shoes aren't great. These are similar but more on trend. They aren't too expensive, I have them in another colour and they're comfortable and easy to walk in.

Maybe I'm being blind but they have an ankle strap too?

This dress looks much better at this length. I think this is the best choice with some glam jewellery.

purpledalmation · 28/12/2022 19:36

A pretty sparkly bolero would look nice with this and balance it out

purpledalmation · 28/12/2022 19:37

Three, two then one. Three definitely nicest
