I look better in my head than I do in RL

Is this common? Just back from a family do. I made an effort, looked nice. Cool even. Then family send me some pics and I realise I essentially look like my brother in a wig, which isn't the look I'm going for.

Not a single nice photo of me that matches how I perceived myself in the mirror. I don't think I'm a stunner by any means, but I was quote shocked at the disconnect.

Anyone else get this?

I'd imagine this is very common. I'm quite happy with pretending to myself I'm not half bad, but reality occasionally gets in the way 🙂

CaptainBarbosa · 28/12/2022 00:29

Oh this is me.

I get ready, put on my war paint and armour. I look in the mirror I think yes I've got this, I am a knight of the round table, magnificent and shiny.

Looks at photo...I gave Baldrick and monty python holy grail love child vibes.

Gutted 🤣

This thread has really made me laugh, thank you all Grin I'm with all the posters who can't believe how old their school contemporaries are now...

WingBingo · 28/12/2022 10:01

I am told I am attractive, and sometimes I even feel attractive

but no, all lies once I see a photo of me.

PunnyGirl · 28/12/2022 10:54

I'm glad I found this thread as I feel exactly the same. I'm still 25 in my head and think I look great on a night out. I read on here years ago someone describe this and it stuck with me. She said: I have body euphoria, I think I'm a babe'. It's heartening that many of us feel this way actually. My brother used to be a photo developer back in the pre-digital days and he always said some people just aren't photogenic.

CaptBuckyOHare · 28/12/2022 11:07

I'm not remotely photogenic and have literally had people commenting unprompted that I don't look like that in real life when they see a photo of me. I'll be screwed if I ever have to use online dating!

Doesn't help that I have an incredibly photogenic sister. I think it's the cheek bones. She definitely got more than her fair share!

YellowHpok · 28/12/2022 11:11

'Body euphoria'!! What a great phrase! Love it!

Oh absolutely.

Especially as I am not very wrinkly - obviously this is lucky, but in my head I half belief I look the same as I did at 35 (I am 50 😁)

Currently compounded by being vastly overweight. I know I’m overweight, I just think I am only 30% as overweight as I actually am.

It’s the camera that’s wrong obvs. Bad angles. Etc.

Laska2Meryls · 28/12/2022 11:26

I delete every photo of me that I can and dont let anyone take any if I can prevent it. I make sure that I am behind the camera at all functions. We have 25 plus years of holiday snaps, weddings family dos which apparently I never went to- just DH and the kids /grandchildren ..

.

CrabDuckDuckCrab · 28/12/2022 11:48

I think I look fine in the mirror, and then I see photos and look exactly like the FaceApped male me.

And YY to the PP who said about people saying they're nice photos of you. Makes me want to fetch a hessian sack to wear a la Oogie Boogie.

I would LOVE to know the name for this. Its like the opposite of body dysmorphia. Or maybe it is dysmorphia but in a positive way 🤔

I can definitely practice taking a better picture. And the reverse image thing makes sense, sometimes I catch a glimpse of myself on TEAMS if someone shares their screen and that is a horrifying flip.

Oh good god yes the Teams thing where they are sharing a document, stop sharing that but share their screen and there you are - horrific. I have finally got used to seeing myself on Teams but I will never ever get used to that.

Surely it means you go out into the world with confidence and head held high, not creeping out like an apologetic mouse. And confidence is very attractive.

This is how I see it.

Shadope · 28/12/2022 12:29

although I always wear makeup, it doesn’t seem to show on photos - looks like I’m not wearing any

god me too! I wear quite a strong make up look as I like it but in photos it’s disappeared!!

CoffeandTiaMaria · 28/12/2022 13:48

I hate photos of me, my passport photo looks like a corpse lying on the bottom of a deep swimming pool 🫣
In real life I look like my mother, but greyer, more haggard and much fatter. I don’t think all the makeup in the world would help!
In my head I’m neat, tidy and passable….
