This outfit, worth recreating?

I'm drawn to this look, it's very 'me' and I am slim, have the right face/hair that would work with it, but even though I never consider anything too young, maybe it's the skirt pattern, i don't know, reminds me of the 90's (love!) but I am not sure how or where I'd wear that style. It's neither dressy nor practical.
I am late 40's Grin

Now, if I did recreate this kind of look, I wouldn't be justifying Cabbages and Roses prices, sadly. Anything excess I have is spoken for. So I would perhaps try ebay or vintage. I already have a similar jumper..

I don't like midi lengths but do suit mini's. But is this style a bit too odd? I feel stupid asking this as I don't believe in rules, but not sure it's worth the effort.

Have at it MN, insult or adore it, I'm open to ideas!

Definite yes but wear the skirt slightly longer. Doesn't need to be "midi" below the knee but run it to just touching the knee maybe.

YukoandHiro · 13/12/2022 20:49

I wouldn't call this 90s (I was a 90s teen). It's very 2005 twee indie. I wore this sort of look to death in winter in my early 20s.

HundredMilesAnHour · 13/12/2022 20:50

Sorry OP, I hate it. The dark tights with the light upper, and then the floral clashing (and not in a good way) with the pattern on the jumper. I think it looks like she's got dressed in the dark from what she could find on her bedroom floor. Hideous. 0/10 for style. Is this an actual ad? The stylist should be shot.

SnowyPheasants · 13/12/2022 20:51

would likely be at knee on me!
I wonder if it's more roaming the halls of one's country manor on a lazy afternoon than say, popping to the local shop.

dressed in the dark Grin i kinda like that though.
this jumper and skirt would total over £450 or so!!! (and no, I can't!)

I'm sorry but I'm not a fan. I don't feel it's 90s if that's what you're going for but more style free. Inoffensive sure but non descript. I don't personally hate the skirt length or a short skirt and jumper but I don't like the hem, or pom poms. Sorry!!!

MeJane · 13/12/2022 20:53

I don't mind the outfit but she looks like she's put on her teenager's school shoes so she can put the bin out.

5128gap · 13/12/2022 20:54

Love the skirt and it looks great with the black tights. Chunky boots would look good too.
I like the shape of the outfit with the jumper but that particular jumper is too much with the additional pattern. I'd go for a plain cream or grey jumper, or even black and let the skirt have centre stage. I'm 53.

lmnabc · 13/12/2022 20:56

Love it but it needs biker boots to bring it up to date

mrwalkensir · 13/12/2022 20:58

The shoes and tights are a bit dark, but it's a lovely look if you have that build.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 13/12/2022 20:58

One of my workmates was wearing something similar today, but with very cool trainers

SnowyPheasants · 13/12/2022 21:11

I don't mind the outfit but she looks like she's put on her teenager's school shoes so she can put the bin out.

I love you Grin

I agree about the double pattern, I can see it with a slouchy solid colour top. Not sure biker boots would bring it up to date though, maybe suede laceups..

The dark tights need to be replaced with something less harsh - maybe burgundy and the footwear brought up to date

overall I’m not a fan

Alonglongtimeago · 13/12/2022 21:17

I think it’s fine. Not my style at all but lots of people would look nice in it.

VioletPickles · 13/12/2022 21:18

Nope not for me, hate the clashing print. 😊

Winter2019 · 13/12/2022 21:18

Horrible IMO

carefulcalculator · 13/12/2022 21:19

It is fine, it is pretty uncontroversial and nice.

I do not think you need to overthink this, just buy a cheap skirt and wear with your jumper.

SnowyPheasants · 13/12/2022 21:22

I used to dress like this for under 18's indie nights at our town's nightclub. This was in the early 90's. I'd wear a poofy short skirt, baggy jumper and tights with docs. I suppose in some odd way I still see this as studenty, or just impractical. Not that it would get in the way of me doing much, apart from bouldering or tumbling through thorns (another story).

I once walked through John Lewis in a long silk midi skirt and a rotten bastard wire egg holder on display caught it, pulled, and destroyed it. I am a bit angsty about skirts to this day.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 13/12/2022 21:28

Sorry but I think it looks ridiculous.

DappledThings · 13/12/2022 21:38

This is basically how I've been dressing for about 30 years.😂 Didn't realise it qualified as a specific look. I like those kind of jumpers and those kind of skirts and I only like black tights so it's just happened. Usually with cheap imitation Converse.

MoanySloney · 13/12/2022 21:41

I used to dress like this in the 90s and kinda still dress like this now. Agree with needing DM or big boots.

You have committed the cardinal MN sin of criticising the beloved midi skirt/air force one uniform that every woman over the age of 30 must wear.

garlicandsapphires · 13/12/2022 21:45

I quite like this look (it's Cabbages and Roses isn't it - I am quite 'drawn' to their look, but couldn't imagine wearing it in real life - plus it seems ridiculously overpriced for what it is (made in China, not-cotton/ wool)
Anyway, I think it's a good look and you should go for it, or at least give it a go and see how it feels.

Bouledeneige · 13/12/2022 21:49

I used to dress like this in the late 80s when I was mid to late 20s. I wouldn't have done later though - the skirt is a bit girlie. But good on you if you want to.

TinaYouFatLard · 13/12/2022 21:53

I actually like the look but in my mid forties I just think it’s a bit young/student.

EarringsandLipstick · 13/12/2022 21:55

Bar the shoes, I like it a lot. Definitely biker boots or similar.
