This outfit, worth recreating?

I'm drawn to this look, it's very 'me' and I am slim, have the right face/hair that would work with it, but even though I never consider anything too young, maybe it's the skirt pattern, i don't know, reminds me of the 90's (love!) but I am not sure how or where I'd wear that style. It's neither dressy nor practical.
I am late 40's Grin

Now, if I did recreate this kind of look, I wouldn't be justifying Cabbages and Roses prices, sadly. Anything excess I have is spoken for. So I would perhaps try ebay or vintage. I already have a similar jumper..

I don't like midi lengths but do suit mini's. But is this style a bit too odd? I feel stupid asking this as I don't believe in rules, but not sure it's worth the effort.

Have at it MN, insult or adore it, I'm open to ideas!

I love this look tbh. Early 2000s indie twee sounds fine to me. 🤣

SnowyPheasants · 14/12/2022 14:25

This, it’s dated and not in a good way.

ah, like biker boots, nikeAF1 and midi skirts with a biker jacket! Grin

I also think 'dated' is a frumpy word, a prescription for fear in the middle aged and insecure. The terror of getting it wrong, being a bit out of the loop.
Oh my days!
Pass me the salts!

It is also a prescription for waste, excessive consumption and having your mind made up by someone else. Times are a changin..

Is this part of the frazzled Englishwoman style people are on about?
It looks like something from an old rom-com. It isn't my style, but if I saw another woman wearing it I wouldn't think 'oh that's awful' either, it isn't out there!
I'd more likely notice it because it would be v different to what people in my area wear (everyone dresses the same...) so you'd win points for that alone.

Huh? No it means something which is unnecessary ageing and unflattering

Dayil · 14/12/2022 15:22

Thanks OP that makes me want to continue with my diet! Takes me back to being busy busy, but oh so energetic days when I had a spring in my step with a happiness only the young know!

Zedcarz · 14/12/2022 15:35

Defo not 90s, its just a floral skirt and a Fair Isle jumper .
With tights
And shoes.
You must have these components already , if not should be very easy to recreate from a charity shop if nothing else.
It's nice enough but I wouldn't call it an outfit per se, just a skirt and jumper.
Ageless and timeless combo

sonsmum · 14/12/2022 15:36

I'm late 40s and I like that look. I don't wear skirts very often, but if i did, I'd wear that skirt/jumper combo. They do clash but in an acceptable way. As separate items, I probably wouldn't look twice at them, but they do go together. I think black knee high boots would be the best footwear.

Andsoforth · 14/12/2022 16:00

I am really drawn to this sort of look but I don’t feel this quite works. The skirt is to voluminous and gathered and the patterns don’t clash in the right way for my eye.

I’ve seen quite a few women my age (late 40s) dressed in 90s-ish styles looking absolutely themselves in a way that some younger women don’t. Maybe it’s because us oldies are putting the clothes together in a more 90s way. I openly admit that I always miss the subtle trend shifts until they’re nearly out of date

so maybe the exact things I’m not liking in this outfit are what make it more now than then.

I’m really embracing the idea of feeling like myself in my clothes rather than flattering my figure, or dressing my age.

AnyRandomName · 14/12/2022 17:53

I know you don't fancy it as much today but I really like the skirt and if worn with a darker jumper the look works. Personally I'd add boots but I need that balance due to body's shape.

And what has age got to do with it. I don't think clothes or style should be categorised by age, wear what you want when you want to. Anyone who judges isn't worth even a second of consideration. (Not that I think they would, it would be a lovely outfit and I personally love the skirt)

Life is too short for boring clothes, wear what makes you happy.

Daffodilsinbloom37 · 15/12/2022 09:23

I love this look! (Apart from maybe the shoes.)

In fact, more muted colours and patterns, but I regularly wear a flared short skirt, black tights and jumper to work (with boots). I'm late 30s.

This shape of outfit suits me though as I'm 5'4, size 8 and a carrot 😁

I don't care what anyone says, no style of long or midi skirt (asymmetrical hem, handkerchief hem, whatever) suits me.

And I agree with what PP say, who cares whether it's 'in fashion', if it looks good on you and you feel comfortable in it, wear it!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 15/12/2022 10:31

For me it reminds me slightly of early 90s - I loved short skirts with patterned tights though and I was a student.

I agree if you’re going to wear it then add biker boots. I personally don’t like the hem on the skirt (too puffball?) but there are ones of wool a line skirts around.

Busytimes · 15/12/2022 22:29

I like it lots !

OP the irony! Just wear the outfit and don’t worry what anyone thinks.

LivelyBlake · 16/12/2022 14:46

As a PP said, I'd try an oversize jumper with a tartan miniskirt. I wish I had the legs to wear them.

SnowyPheasants · 16/12/2022 20:32

I do like it but it can eff off at that price. I might wait until i have my country pile.

OP posts:
TheYummyPatler · 16/12/2022 20:34

I mean, the price is ridiculous.

What were you thinking of to recreate it at a reasonable price?

and yet here you are on MN asking if this look is a bit too odd...

Rapunzel22 · 16/12/2022 21:12

I do love the look though especially if I was a skinny 17 year old.

wannarunfromitall · 16/12/2022 21:16

I absolutely love it. I had a Hush dress a few years back that mimicked this look, it was a black thin longish jumper attached to a short polyester nicely patterned layered super short skirt. No idea why I got rid of it as I would definitely wear it now. Hush! Get on it Xmas Smile

I think I still have that very dress if it's the same. I wore it only last week. Long jumper, tiny percentage cashmere, and very thin shortish skirt attached.

blueshoes · 16/12/2022 22:13

It reminds me of 90s kooky with coltish legs. Expect to see a young head above the shoulders though.

Lilliflip · 16/12/2022 23:55

Yes it’s early ‘90’s and I’d say ‘92/3/4. I used to wear things like this in ‘92 in sixth form, in fact that’s what it reminds me of… just off to the library to do some history revision. If that’s what floats your boat, then I say go for it. It would be boring if we all liked the same stuff.

Tintime2022 · 17/12/2022 07:52

SnowyPheasants · 13/12/2022 21:22

I used to dress like this for under 18's indie nights at our town's nightclub. This was in the early 90's. I'd wear a poofy short skirt, baggy jumper and tights with docs. I suppose in some odd way I still see this as studenty, or just impractical. Not that it would get in the way of me doing much, apart from bouldering or tumbling through thorns (another story).

I once walked through John Lewis in a long silk midi skirt and a rotten bastard wire egg holder on display caught it, pulled, and destroyed it. I am a bit angsty about skirts to this day.

There we go, then we’ve hit the nail on the head what you don’t want to do is look like you are trying to look 18 when you’re 40 it’s a bit cringe

Calphurnia88 · 17/12/2022 10:46

YukoandHiro · 13/12/2022 20:49

I wouldn't call this 90s (I was a 90s teen). It's very 2005 twee indie. I wore this sort of look to death in winter in my early 20s.

All of this.

I would say it's a very dated look, and not in a cool, vintage inspired way.

Sorry!
