Nails - does anyone just do nothing? 😬

I’ve tried everything!

professional, different brands, hard gel, builder gel, extensions, normal gel!

I’ve done a course and tried to learn how to do them myself and spent a fortune and they still look shit.

I’ve tried ‘gel style ’ polish, Essie, Sally Hansen, OPI and it looks shit.

it doesn’t matter what salon does my nails it comes off within 2 days.

The only thing that is just about ok is pushed back cuticles and clear polish. Even a hint of colour and it chips and looks rank.

Im so envious of people with perfect gel nails 😭

self indulgent moan but does anyone else do nothing with their nails? 💅

If I’m going out somewhere special I’ll bang on some nail polish but that’s as much as I do.

@Remainiac same here

VaddaABeetch · 12/12/2022 18:25

Another one who doesn’t like the look of varnish or gels. I keep mine short, I need to use a nail brush at least once a day. I shudder to think of some of the germs under long nails.

Gatekeeper · 12/12/2022 18:25

I cut mine very short and leave 'em. Occasionally file them a bit smoother or buff them with a chamois buffer thing but other than that I don't give a stuff! I used to have them long and painted as a young 'un but at 59 I can't stand the feel of them longer anymore

TheSpottedZebra · 12/12/2022 18:31

I rather resent the idea that I'm incomplete without a coating of plastic on my nails! Hence I do nothing. Clip when needed, and file to take jaggy edges off.

But I do have naturally good nails that grow long and white. I also always wear rubber gloves when cleaning or washing up, and use loads of handcream. Plus I garden a lot and like to give them a really good scrub.

Thighdentitycrisis · 12/12/2022 18:41

I really dislike my nails. Don’t like the shape, have vertical ridges that split and I have thick crusty cuticles. They’ve also begun to change shape flattening out where before there was a bit of a dome. I keep them short and filed.

SantaOnFanta · 12/12/2022 18:43

Absolutely can not stand the look of any painted nails and especially the tacky art and craft that gets put on and everyone thinks it's amazing and they want to show them off. It's nasty.

I always have 100 % natural nails.

SantaOnFanta · 12/12/2022 18:45

Also can't stand the blob nails... Like thick blobs on nails. What is that about?

DerekFaker · 12/12/2022 18:51

I cut mine with nail clippers 😆

Pictograph · 12/12/2022 19:07

I do nothing with mine except cut them. Gel nails maybe about once every two years!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 12/12/2022 19:31

Years ago in my 20s and 30s I rarely wore nail polish. Sometimes if I was going clubbing but then I found a Nars sheer red polish and wore that on and off.

I’ve had gels on and off for the past few years, before that I had normal manicures sometimes too with polish and I did the Maybelline express polish too so I’ve swung the other way.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 12/12/2022 19:38

I don't know anyone with acrylics now but I know a few who have gels. Everyone else just has natural nails.

Mine are always painted as (a) they are dirt magnets and (b) I have a job where I quite often have to point out stuff to clients so they need to look nice.

I do them myself over the weekend and they usually last a week.

Sally Hansen Double Duty for base and top coat with two coats of Maybelline Super Stay 7 Days.

Focusfocusfocusfolks · 12/12/2022 19:40

For anyone saying their nails are prone to breaking, splitting etc, I've accidentally found a cure for this (for me anyway).

A few weeks ago I bought Boots Joint Assure Plus tablets, in hopes they'd help my arthritis pain. I don't know if they're doing anything for the pain but they definitely have strengthened my nails significantly. I'll try to post a s/shot.

I mostly keep my nails short and bare, occasionally paint them a pale pink for special occasions. Fingers are a bit deformed from arthritis so I don't like drawing attention to them! Oh and I think my hair is in better condition too.

Nails - does anyone just do nothing? 😬
Tyrozet · 12/12/2022 19:43

I'm not allowed make up of any kind at work. I do like how my nails look when I paint them if I'm not working but I rarely bother as I have to remove it after a day or two and it's not worth the faff.

I do like not having any upkeep and worrying about chips etc.

PermanentTemporary · 12/12/2022 19:49

Me. I do like the look of gels but I had them done once and it was a bit sore and a long process. Haven't bothered again. I'm an HCP so can't do them during the week.

I do like handcream and I wish I did basic nail care more often. I also love nail polish videos.

mizu · 12/12/2022 20:42

I cut mine with nail clippers too - and have never been to a nail salon. Keep my nails short and neat. They grow quickly and are in good condition.

I do love painting my toe nails in the summer though!

DuchessofSandwich · 12/12/2022 16:00

My passion is metalsmithing. None of us have nice nails.

Mine is rock climbing, so same.

I'm actually a bit relieved that I have a good excuse just to keep them short now. Before I used to feel like I should paint them and stuff, but doing so bores me to tears. I have been known in the past to have one beautifully filed and painted hand and the other...not, when I got too bored to continue halfway through doing them. 🙃

crosstalk · 12/12/2022 21:04

Have never done my nails. Had stuff put on for DS wedding but peeled within days after which they got dry and flaked. Just keep them short and neat. And clean! Another gardener.

catsonahottinroof · 12/12/2022 21:09

I think I will just have gel toe nails from now on, as I've just had gel nails removed and my nails are ruined - paper thin, peeling and splitting really low down. I do like the look of gels, but for me it isn't worth it. I am now trying biotin and a nail strengthener and will be happy with plain nails, maybe sometimes a bit of polish.
Incidentally, I've never liked the look of fake nail extensions, but I did get them once by mistake (I asked for gels but it was a Vietnamese place and by the time I realised what they were doing I was too embarrassed to make a fuss. They felt horrible and I hated them.

RaininginDarling · 12/12/2022 21:14

Me. Can't be bothered with any of it. Will get some gel polish on for my wedding but otherwise, the stuff never lasts on me and I really don't care for the talon look

ehb102 · 12/12/2022 23:27

Me. I dabbled with gels and acrylics but I can't be arsed. It's a time tax I refuse to pay. I even did that think where you polish the ridges off your nails. Short and clean now. I don't need to make my hands look longer or elegant. I need my hands to catch balls, open jars, type, mould icing, wash up.

Mrcpy · 12/12/2022 23:35

I use hand cream and nail oil, and cut my nails short. I’m fairly hands on with sports, music, kids, so polish doesn’t last long. Also I find long nails gross and tacky…

Vetoncall · 13/12/2022 01:32

Me, I've never had my nails done in my life. I keep them clean and tidy and I'll paint them myself once in a blue moon if there's a specific occasion like a wedding or something but I take it off again the next day, it's just not me. I do my toes in the summer but never my hands.

Even if I did like them, long and/or painted nails aren't practical for my job (performing surgery almost daily) or my lifestyle/hobbies (gundog training and I do CrossFit/weightlifting 6 days a week) and I don't like the look of them either, especially the really long, clicky acrylic ones.

Hunkahunkaa · 13/12/2022 01:35

I don't do my nails, it's not allowed in either of my jobs so I can't.

Squirrelsnut · 13/12/2022 01:51

Me 99%of the time. I actually still bite them..

DPotter · 13/12/2022 02:49

My hands are in and out of water and clay pretty much all day long so any nail varnish / gel would be a complete waste of money & time.

Like others I don't see the attraction of gel nails at all. My main concern is making sure my skin isn't too dry and chapped and my nails are clean. Life is definitely too short!
