Nails - does anyone just do nothing? 😬

I’ve tried everything!

professional, different brands, hard gel, builder gel, extensions, normal gel!

I’ve done a course and tried to learn how to do them myself and spent a fortune and they still look shit.

I’ve tried ‘gel style ’ polish, Essie, Sally Hansen, OPI and it looks shit.

it doesn’t matter what salon does my nails it comes off within 2 days.

The only thing that is just about ok is pushed back cuticles and clear polish. Even a hint of colour and it chips and looks rank.

Im so envious of people with perfect gel nails 😭

self indulgent moan but does anyone else do nothing with their nails? 💅

Keep mine shortish and neat with a coat of clear polish. Very occasionally I'll use colour but never gels or false nails.

ButterflyBiscuit · 12/12/2022 17:19

Most people don't do anything to their nails do they?

Its quite expensive to get gels and it isn't a look everyone likes.

RiderOfTheBlue · 12/12/2022 17:19

I used to paint my nails all the time. Had well over a hundred polishes, stamping kits, decals etc. I never had bare nails then. I tried gel polishes twice and they damaged my nails so I stopped painting them for a while so I could get them back into shape and I've never really bothered since. I've got used to them being bare now, just trimmed neatly. Probably polish them about once a year now and I'm generally glad to remove it.

I never notice other people's nails if they're neat so I imagine nobody will notice mine. I only ever notice when people have tatty, chipped polish or nails of differing lengths.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 12/12/2022 17:20

Nothing at all. Longer than about 2mm feels absolutely gross to me and polish also feels horrible. Cut short, clean and filed only.

Fairislefandango · 12/12/2022 17:21

Me, because I can't be bothered. I paint my nails myself, probably twice a year. Once when I go on holiday in the summer, once at Christmas!

I dislike the look of gel nails and I don't think coloured nails make enough difference to people's overall look to justify the effort/expense.

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 12/12/2022 17:23

I do very little to my nails - I'm sure that polish dries them out and leaves them in a worse state. I apply bio oil to them at night and they've grown strong and don't look too bad, if I say so myself.

Daisy62 · 12/12/2022 17:23

I do nothing (apart from basic filing and handcream). I don't like the look of nail varnish on fingernails.

OldTinHat · 12/12/2022 17:26

I do sod all with my nails. Nothing at all.

ImCindaCanning · 12/12/2022 17:34

I trim and file mine - that's it. I personally find the fashion for talons a bit repellant. I sat next to a woman with fake talons on a train a while ago. She had her hands in her lap and I could see all the muck under her nails. It was gross. Give me clean, natural nails every time.

Wotrewelookinat · 12/12/2022 17:36

I do nothing, just cut them very short. I’m a vet. Long nails, and even painted nails are a complete no-no.

bellamountain · 12/12/2022 17:46

I do nothing either, just keep them short and neat. With two young kids and playing a team sport, it's not practical to have them any other way than natural. If I'm going out though and want to make an effort, I'll paint them. Think the old fashioned paint them yourself (with a decent nail polish) is far better for your nails as gels do ruin your natural nails.

NoDramaMama12 · 12/12/2022 17:47

Same, literally nothing.

I've probably painted them once in my life.

5128gap · 12/12/2022 17:48

I rarely do. They are strong and grow long and well shaped naturally, when I leave them alone that is. When I faff with them they get weak and break all the time.
I think done nails are a bit overated tbh. Yes they look pretty, but in all honesty aren't game changing in grooming terms. No one would think you looked any the worse without them. And I speak as an appearance conscious person who does hair, make up etc. In fairness I'm of an age to remember when nails weren't a thing, so they've always been low priority to me.

MassiveSalad22 · 12/12/2022 17:50

🙃🙃🙃

The only thing I do is anxiety skin-biting, and the actual nails always break halfway down the nail bed too ugh

superplumb · 12/12/2022 17:52

The only thing which stays on my nails is powder and its bitch to remove. I went a month with it until the regrowth annoyed me and I had them removed.

DorritLittle · 12/12/2022 17:53

I do nothing. Occasionally I paint them for an occasion but I don't like the feel of painted nails.

elm26 · 12/12/2022 17:59

Check out BIAB. I love mine 😊

Spudina · 12/12/2022 18:03

I’m a 44 year old nurse. Not allowed to have any kind of nails so I’ve never even learnt to paint them. My husband does quite a good job though...

Haver74 · 12/12/2022 18:05

I have a plain manicure - so all the shaping and cuticle work, but no polish. My nails look lovely, but not "done". Most salons will do this if you ask, although not often listed as a service because everyone wants gel!

Twillow · 12/12/2022 18:06

Chronic nailbiter so no, I do nothing and cannot bear the thought of fake nails - those gaps when they start to grow out give me the ick.
Occasionally toenail polish in summer.

APurpleSquirrel · 12/12/2022 18:06

I do very little - cut & file when needed; occasionally paint them, usually at Christmas or a special occasion, use hand cream when I remember. Paint my toe nails in summer - that's it.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/12/2022 18:06

Me, my nails are very rarely painted and usually bitten or broken. I'm not proud of that, it's just my nails.

IrisAtwood · 12/12/2022 18:08

I keep my nails shortish, clean, manicure the cuticles, and occasionally use clear polish.

SarahAndQuack · 12/12/2022 18:09

Just short and neat 99.9% of the time. I work in a plant nursery and my hands get a lot of wear and tear, so it's most hygienic to keep them short and well scrubbed. I am not a big fan of anything that can break off/splinter in public - there's nothing less attractive than seeing someone's nail ping away into their dinner, or shaking hands with someone whose long nail has just snagged into a rough talon!

CoffeandTiaMaria · 12/12/2022 18:12

Me, apart from keeping them short and clean. I tried gel nails but, because my nails grow really quickly) I hated seeing them starting to grow out within a couple of weeks. They also wrecked my nails.
Talons make me feel sick, I imagine what must get trapped under them 🤢
