Nails - does anyone just do nothing? 😬

I’ve tried everything!

professional, different brands, hard gel, builder gel, extensions, normal gel!

I’ve done a course and tried to learn how to do them myself and spent a fortune and they still look shit.

I’ve tried ‘gel style ’ polish, Essie, Sally Hansen, OPI and it looks shit.

it doesn’t matter what salon does my nails it comes off within 2 days.

The only thing that is just about ok is pushed back cuticles and clear polish. Even a hint of colour and it chips and looks rank.

Im so envious of people with perfect gel nails 😭

self indulgent moan but does anyone else do nothing with their nails? 💅

Me. I prefer to actually use my hands to do things.

Fake nails send an unpleasant shiver down my spine. I don't mind nail polish, but only wear it about twice a year. It lasts one evening, because the next day I'm usually scrubbing/DIY-ing/gardening/swimming etc. Having a nice active life is a higher priority than colourful nails.
The exception was when DS was a baby... the colourful nails were so entertaining that it probably would have been worth painting them every other day just to get some peace!

Seaweedandsalt · 12/12/2022 13:38

The thought of having false nails makes me feel a bit sick to be honest, I hate it when you accidently catch your own nail or bend it back by accident so to have that happen more often having false nails would make me feel queasy.

I can't see the point, having a horse and getting my own finger nails caught in the haynet when filling it makes me cringe, falsies wouldn't last five minutes.

Snoken · 12/12/2022 13:56

I have always had natural nails. I just keep them short with a millimetre or so of white. They are filed so they are smooth. Because I have never messed with them (acrylics etc) they are strong and healthy looking. I have always liked the natural look in most things, but I do wear some makeup most days, but never OTT.

Brilliant replies!

I've found my naked nails people 💅🏼

I keep them clean and trimmed. I will put on nail varnish myself once a while for a party, if I get round to it in time, but I don't do manicures, gel nails or anything. Too much gardening, washing up, housework, etc for them to stay unchipped for more than about 5 minutes, and they look fine, all clean and tidy and short. I like my nails.

KirstenBlest · 12/12/2022 15:55

I have a habit of not cutting or filing them and they get scarily long. I have done them recently though. I just file them unless they are extremely long.

DuchessofSandwich · 12/12/2022 16:00

My passion is metalsmithing. None of us have nice nails.

Mouthfulofquiz · 12/12/2022 16:10

I don’t do ‘nothing’ but what I do is, filed and buff to a nice shine. Put Dior crème abricot nail cream on once a day.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 12/12/2022 16:17

I think a well manicured and nail polished hand finishes off your groomed look. I like to see nice nails whether they are painted or not. My nails are usually looked after but I am going through a phase of breaking, tearing and ultra short nails so the appointment I prebooked for Christmas will be passed on to my daughter and I will just have to wait until they grow.
I was looking forward to having nail art for Christmas so am gutted

KnittedCardi · 12/12/2022 16:21

Natural here too, and actually, often get commented on how lovely my nails look! They are just naturally glossy with quite white ends.

Like some other pp's I really don't like heavily gelled nails or long patterned freaky nails. Tapping on phones with them is like scrapping on a blackboard. Gives me the heeby jeebys.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 12/12/2022 16:24

I do absolutely nothing (aside from trim and file down rouch edges). I think they look ok! (I wear nail varnish on my toenails in the summer though. Applied by myself.)

SirVixofVixHall · 12/12/2022 16:30

I don’t do anything to mine. I never have. A couple of times a year I might paint them with coloured polish, but I usually end up taking it off fairly quickly as I don’t like the way I can somehow feel it on my nails.
Also I find long nails a bit ugggghhh, so mine are kept short.

jellybeanteaparty · 12/12/2022 16:30

Naked nails here, ironically mine grow really well and if I don't cut them for a while people comment on my amazing nails! I however prefer them short and functional

Hbh17 · 12/12/2022 16:31

The large majority of women that I know do nothing to their nails, including me.

WhaleInAManger · 12/12/2022 16:32

The only thing that is just about ok is pushed back cuticles and clear polish.

This is all I do. After a lifetime of being allergic to every type of polish going, I have finally found one that I can wear. It's clear and it's all I ever wear. I never have long nails, just short and rounded and clear varnish on them.

Benjispruce4 · 12/12/2022 16:38

I mostly do nothing g bar hand cream and the odd file. I will paint t them for a night out. Hate the loom of acrylic nails. They just look fake. Quite like short, neat painted nails

Hailingfrequenciesopen · 12/12/2022 16:42

I do my own gel with the UV light. I get the real cnd product and I get two weeks then I need to take them off due to re-growth, I rarely get chips and I have pets and hobbies using my hands. I get the odd chop and I just fix it.

Natural, tidy, buffed nails look lovely, My personal presence is colour.

Noluthando · 12/12/2022 16:44

I have very strong nails. I just cut mine short and that's it.

2bazookas · 12/12/2022 16:54

I cut my nails, and scrub them with a brush if they get very dirty.
THat's it. Total nail care. Works for me.

WunWun · 12/12/2022 16:57

I love having gel nails, but after a couple of weeks it grows out and looks awful. I've stopped getting it done because they over file the surface getting it off and it makes my normally really strong nails crap - bending back and breaking at the drop of a hat.

learieonthewildmoor · 12/12/2022 16:58

I have allergies so can only wear vegan nail polish, which lasts 3 days tops. I go through periods where I make the effort to apply nail polish to my short nails, but it’s a lot of bother for something that is so short lived.
Also, whenever I wear nail polish I am reminded that the performance of femininininity is a trap, sucking in women’s energy and attention to focus on how they look to other people. I never think about that when I wear lipstick.

grafittiartist · 12/12/2022 17:00

Only cut mine. Couldn't cope with another thing to look after! For too much maintenance!
I prefer short nails

CheeseIsMyPatronus · 12/12/2022 17:01

Nothing. It's too much hassle and gardening wrecks them anyway.

Delectable · 12/12/2022 17:02

Many TTC women over 40 really wear polish.

ButterCrackers · 12/12/2022 17:05

My nails always look unkempt. I file and trim them but they break at the wrong moment and I get dry skin bits on the sides. I’d like to have perfect nails. Never been to a salon as I’m too ashamed.
